p.2 #1 · Used a D3 w/ 600mm f4 lens tonight

Why does everyone care so much about the D300?
It looks like the D300 is a nice camera, while the D3 is a slam dunk.
Sure it may cost more but it finally seems like a camera that Canon has no answer too, a camera that could shift the balance of power, and for many photographers be the last camera they realistically need.

So the D300 is alright, but the D3 is the star of the show now let's start treating it like it is.

Awesome insight Nik... thanks a pantload! I can't wait to sample these myself...

I so much wish I was in a position to splurge on the D3. I've tried and retried re-configuring what I can sell to buy this camera and it just ain't working for me right now. The D300 falls perfectly into line with what I can "afford" right now and that's why I've pre-ordered. But the more I hear the more I think I'm lusting for the D3.

When's that stinkin' lottery coming through for me anyway

I suspect it's for the very simple reason that it the model that most can afford. Sure the D3 is an extraordinary camera, but if it's out of my reach then it 'aint going to make the slightest difference to my photography.

By the way, and for the record...

Nik currently holds the title for having created the thread that ran the longest on the front page of the Nikon forum here (Your best Nikon shots...) and also for the most posts, if I am correct here. I doubt - and for very good reason - that it will ever be supplanted.

This thread, at this point in time, with this much anticipation about the new bodies, may slot nicely into #2 spot in NO time.

Nik, you da man!!!

Nikt ... what was it that you had on your mind when you said the date is on for tonight and then wrote you are going to do a "Full Hands On" review?

Freudian?

I was thinking the same thing, glad I'm not the only one phew!

I see the D300 as the digital equivalent of the F100 finally realized. Kudos.

You must have a lot bigger wallet than most photographers. While I'm currently spending enough on photographic gear to buy the D3, I'm getting a lot more for it (read that as glass.) If I can surpass D2X performance for $1800 with a D300, that's fine with me.

Ultimately each photographer has their own ideas of what is important, and though I may someday own a D3 or something similar, I wasn't prepared to shell out $5000 for a camera body at this time. Not being a pro, the D300 is like a dream come true, and I bet hobbyists outnumber the pros by a long shot.

I suspect that is why so many care about the D300.

It really is hard to see the almost 3x price difference for a camera that takes the same lenses, has the same focus system, same LCD on the back. It comes down to the new sensor and it's promise of noise free images and greater dynamic range.

As a professional photographer who makes next to no income after equipment, advertising and consumables costs I had a hard time justifying the D2x when I already had a D1x and D2h. The D3 however is a big enough step forward that it's a must have and will be my first top end camera body purchase in six years, I ordered one from Ritz as soon as they would take my order. The D300 looks to be a great camera but having something as leading edge as the D3 (while it's still leading edge) is half the reason I'm working as a photographer.

i've been offered a look at the cameras next month, but i just want a d2hs. could do with a 2nd body when the d200 is in its housing for the week. but a d300 might make more scents...

I doubt it , there's a big diff between the two threads. One of them has quality shots, and this one's just a bit of fun and excitment.

Still, I can see why everyone who goes near a D3 talks about it so much. Even if we can't afford it.

I think I have a case of equipment lust right now .... there's about $30K of stuff I want but I'd better find a way to settle for about 7K over the course of 4-5 years.

What a spoiled SOB I am.

Yes, it was the Nikon Roadshow for Sydney. There's one in each capital. They had a speech and presentation before hand , but you could see everyone biting at the bit to go and use the cameras!

p.2 #17 · Used a D3 w/ 600mm f4 lens tonight

I spent a short while taking photos of old cars Sunday at a local street festival. I struck up a conversation with one fellow as we gazed in awe at a 1955 Chevy Nomad that had been restored to beyond perfection. The body had been lifted off the frame, and everything was reworked with fancy suspension, chrome everywhere, the finest leather seats in the interior. This fellow spoke about helping a friend who was considering rebuilding a 1934 Ford Cabriolet. They visited car shows and evaluated hardware available for the serious restorer. They concluded after doing their analysis that buying a completed car through E-Bay for $68,000 was cheaper than doing it themselves for well over a hundred thousand dollars. When I came home I checked E-Bay, marveling at the 1957 Chevy Bel-Aire convertible for sale for $125,000 before checking photos I'd taken. Photography is a hobby for me and I'm very glad I can enjoy myself for so little money. From that perspective, even a five thousand dollar camera doesn't seem like quite such an extravagance. I won't do it, but I feel fortunate that I can find my pleasure in a hobby that doesn't require mortgaging the house...

You're dead right Curtis. Everyone seems to have a hobby, and how much people spend on theirs is all relative. Sure would like to see some people here buy a D3 though. I could live unashamedly through others. and we do like spending other peoples money!

Thanks Curtis, I needed that. You just reminded me that my friend spends more just maintaining his boat each year than I spend on camera equipment; and that does not even count the cost of purchasing the boat to begin with. Gosh, I might buy a lens sooner that later!

Cheers,
Andre
