I think the interesting thing about this new brace of Nikon cameras is that a high quality "sports" camera (with obvious potential for studio and weddings) has been timed for the Summer Olympics! They should easily be able to work out all serious bugs before the event. On paper, the new set of bodies and lenses should be more than fair competition for the current Canon hegemony with the 1D-IIn and 1D-III.
Maybe we will see a "sea of black" rather than the "sea of white" at sporting competitions soon.
I think this is the reason that Nikon chose to deliver a sports-oriented camera rather than a very high pixel count camera and their first full frame offering. This will show, very visibly, that Nikon is back and possibly leading the current version of the camera race.

Good points, and I hope you are right about the sea of black. Now picture this, shooting an NFL game with a new D3 . . . and a blasted CANON vest on just criminal I tell you.
I am a Canon user. When 1D III came out, I posted a similar thread speculating that its release was timed for next years Summer Olympics. This lead time ( ~ 1 year) should allow Canon to iron out any glitches (like the AF issue) and for pro shooters to get to know the new Camera well. Well, some snobs on that forum threw all kinds of sarcasms at me and basically accused me of making it up. I believe that Olympics, being the most important sport event, has a lot to do with the timed release of these new models, whether Canon or Nikon.
