Thanks folks for the tips, I did installed the ACR 4.2 version, and able to see the CR2 format in the ZoomBrowser, but I can't convert them to DNG, nor open it in the PS3 Extended version. However, from what I saw in the ZoomBrowser, the IQ is quite impressive with ISO-100.
Sam, I'm using 4.2 and LR 1.2 daily so there must be a hitch somehow. If you have PSCS3 with ACR 4.2, you don't need dng. It will read and open them fine.

My question concerns the use of Canon 580 flash on the G9. How do I set the camera and flash for auto operation. The flash works perfectly with my 5D and Mark II.

Maybe to spice up this thread I'll post 3 pics. I bought the Kirk L bracket for the G9--I'm sure someone will say WHAT? . I anticipate carrying the G9 with the 5D at times with the tripod--and using it for IR, B/W with a more gritty feel and more DOF. As you may have seen I have already taken issue with Simon over at dp as I don't feel he got the balance right at all in his review.
You can't test the G9 as if it were an Ixus, it just isn't. I have been using mine in RAW via DNG and PSCS2 and the results are quite the best I have ever had out of any compact, period.
But he didn't test this.
Experienced users of the G9 will be the ones looking for the 'new Leica' or 'pro quality compact' and *WILL* be wringing the very best IQ they can out of the thing, that is the whole point.

The G9 is, of course not perfect, it needs a wider lens, a more accurate viewfinder and less noise, but as THE state of the art compact IT IS IT!
For me, the G9 produced consistently worse images than the SD700-IS.
I love the build, features, etc. but when push comes to shove the images were INSANELY noisy and soft (due to noise "reduction" processing). As the former owner of Panasonic & Leica P&S cameras, I frankly found that astonishing -- but it's true. Even RAW images were terribly noisy.
And no, I wasn't using ISO 100 and below. I think the people who are happy with images from the G9 are not using it indoors at ISO 400/800 sans flash.
Way too noisy. The ISO performance is disappointing. All the more expensive digicams produce great pics in good light. Fuji high ISO models are more impressive.

I have 2 F31fd's and they are good at what they do, but you have no RAW and no ability to change the output sharpening, contrast or colour. The G9 produces far better results, because you have the opportunity to work on them.

But--they are all using NR in camera with jpegs. We have an F30 and if you want to shoot in jpeg, that's fine--and nice for lower light for my husband's use, but I want the control over the NR, not letting the camera do it. Shooting in RAW---one can control the areas needed for NR and the amount, the detail---I won't use any camera that doesn't allow me to make those decisions. I also researched the Panny/Leica and Ricoh and while I found much about them I could like---lower noise was not where I thought they excelled.
I've read the previews and review on dpreview. developing film from my Leica CL is killing me with two little kids.
Coming from a 20D and L glass, how happy am I going to be with a G9. I travel a lot, and the 20D is just way to big to bring.
One thing I like to do is long exposures at night. The noise from some of the pics I've seen isn't awe inspiring, especially in the shadows. If you do iso 80 pics with long exposures, how much noise is going to be in darker areas?

A mint used DSC-R1 will cost about $700 and there isn't anything (yet) on the planet that can touch the image quality for that price.
My G9 arrived yesterday. I love everything about this camera ... except the image quality. I'll spend another day or so trying to optimize my workflow before forming any final opinions, but at this point I'm pretty disappointed. Is point & shoot and workflow an oxymoron? I've tried both RAW and JPG (but, don't fully trust Lightroom/ACR 4.2 RAW conversions). You can get better results with RAW. The menus, controls, features, screen ... everything is just superb. It is fun to use ... right up until you open your images. Anyone else go through a rough initial period with their new G9? Any tips?
I've just posted some examples and thoughts regarding my own experience with the G9 and RAW on my blog, http://lightdescription.blogspot.com. Looks like I'll be "testing" and reporting for a while. The G9 is a fun and versatile camera.
ISO 400 from RAW is very usable, probably at least up to 8x10, after post processing in software such as Neat Image and so, I assume, Noise Ninja, etc. The Canon bundled Raw Image Task software (included with Zoom Browser) just won't suffice -- certainly I've not found it to offer much improvement with respect to noise.
If you expect high image quality G9 jpgs, you'll be disappointed and doubly so from the higher ISO settings. If you process the RAW files in RIT, you'll think that all is lost. Use ACR and noise reduction software like Neat Image and you'll be surprised at the results.
