Isn't the D3's ISO 25600 is just the same as underexposing by two stops at 6400 and pushing it in post-processing? Would be interesting to see examples of 1Dmk3 images pushed that far.
EDIT: I see Jeff beat me to it...

This was posted on DPReview a week ago, But not for M3 but 5D instead... IMHO, after a pass through NeatImage, would look very close to D3 samples. And that's 2-years-old tech from Canon...

I'm confused. Why is anyone worried that Nikon may have actually released a camera that even Canon users could like? Isn't it nice to have choices? It seems like (at least to some) this thread is becoming about slamming on a yet to be released camera to justify why someone hates Nikon and will always shoot Canon. That makes those comments about the most unobjective and useless that I've ever seen on this forum. (Okay, maybe there were some that were worse than these. ) Usually I expect better from those of us on FM.

Canon has been making great DSLR's for quite some time now, and I suspect they will continue to do that, being a leader in the field. Nikon may or may not top Canon, but they certainly have generated a lot of interest with these new cameras. (Go try to add you name to the "Notify when in stock" list on B&H's website to see what I mean, or just look at this thread.) I would think we all would want to see Nikon have a couple of winners with these two new cameras, because guess what that would mean for Canon users?

The D3 and D300 are not for everybody. Canon lenses don't work worth crap on them, so it requires buying a lot of gear to switch. Besides, Nikon has yet to release an affordable equivalent to the 5D, so Canon does have some breath left even if "Nikon kills Canon" with these new cameras. (Somehow I doubt that will happen.) These are two great companies who both make some great gear. I would be happy to be in either camp, and I suspect any photographer would, save for medium or large format shooters.

Then again, I don't really consider myself in a "camp," but rather someone who about 18 years ago just happened chose to go with Nikon over the Chinon and Minolta gear that my wife and I were using at the time. I'm as pleased with my choice as you most likely are with yours. There really isn't any need to try to convince me otherwise, because I know you would be full of crap because you don't know why I shoot Nikon in the first place.

Let's all just say it: "Both companies make great geat, but I chose the XXXXX brand." There - do we all feel better now?

I suggest sticking with 'La La La'.
At least that approach is less self revealing.

Have you sent cameras and lenses in together for calibration?
It understandable that you can't consider the 1DIII at this point considering your issues. But when the AF gets fixed the lens microadjustment work very nice.

We don't know the providence of the supposed D3 samples. But if the loss of resolution and smearing that can be seen even at ISO 1600 at 100% crop is representative of the D3 production camera, it will not be a highly competitive pro model. There's also no indication that the sensor in the camera is anything special (again, assuming the shots are representative of the released camera). So at this point there's no reason to believe the low res shots will be extraordinary.

Nikon will be able to show some great shots that look good with their heavy algorithms. But not until we get some real world files with direct comparison to another camera will I have any confidence in the actual characteristics of the new camera.

For all the Aussies that might be interested, PRA in Perth have just put the prices up for the D300 and D3.

The D300 is $2950 (Au$) and the D3 is $7990 (Au$).

One point for the D3 is that it does do the high ISO NR in camera. There is some need for a camera that can directly output high ISO images.
By underexposing you do throw away the two stops with the highest bit depth. But I expect Nikon is doing the same thing in camera.

Based on Jeff's examples above: IMO, ISO 6400 looks great on the 1DmkIII and the 2 stops pushing gives an image that is still quite usable.

Thanks for the examples, Jeff.

Now that we have examined the very high ISO images, I suggest a closer looksee at the ISO 1600 images.
Or 'La La La' for those who want the Nikon High ISO Leader buzz to last awhile longer. The 50% of FM Canon users switching to Nikon will need to get used to these types of images...... _poke_

Until there are production D3's out there, I don't think evaluating the images is valid. You saw the frame rate video of the 1Ds MkIII pre-productiion body, didn't you? Not too impressive... Maybe they had the AF tweaked to work properly in that body, though, and that herky-jerky frame-rate was the result...

... or maybe the "reviewer" wasn't all that sharp and had the camera set in the "L" slow advance speed mode. I have seen worse things, like today discussions of Apple discontinuing the "4 gigabit" iPhone, etc.Personally I don't think Canon would let anyone publicly touch a product if it wasn't up to specs in most regards.

If you are going to have to do a batch to "push" the 6400 2 stops then the addition of a NR step is also easily added. There are many levels of NR selectable in camera on the Nikon bodies and applied to the jpegs in camera captures. As for you suspicions , i don't know if they are correct or not and truly could care less

Better stil Vanbar are quoting the D300 at aud$2598 but it is still too high.
For reasons best known to Canon and Nikon in Aus we seem to pay a min 10% premium on dslr's over and above the "cousins".

On another note their are 800 support staff (Cousins and secret service) in Sydney helping 6000 NSW police and 1500 ADF looking after The US president and APEC. Even the mid week sailing races on the harbour were cancelled. we Aussies have never seen anything like it. A motorcade 250 metres in length to transport the Pres 100 metres and when I tried to take a photo I was met by a gentleman with DARK shades and a hollywood accent, talking to his lapel and asking what I was doing!!!!!!!
