If you pay close attention to my post you responded to you will see on line 2 that we asked for more dynamic range. That would tie in with 16 bit. Guess you glazed over that.
To be honest 16bit and 11-12 stops of dynamic range would have sold me. But 8 stops and 14 bit? How much will the 8 stops hamper the 14 bit? If you take a look at the link I posted earlier to the 11 full size images you can also see a whole lot O noise in iso 1600. No improvement there either. Whats the huge attraction for current owners of the 1ds2? Would you take a 4-5,000 dollar hit for this?...Show more →
What's the huge attraction? Well, higher res, increased bit-depth, sensor cleaning, improved AF, improved metering, af micro adjustment, live view, quieter operation and silent mode, even longer designed shutter life, much bigger buffer, improved menu customization, picture styles, better connectivity...
If that's worth the additional cash... Well, I can't afford one anyway, but that is for everyone to judge for him/herself.
Regarding bit-depth and DR: They are only loosely tied. The first says something about the discrete levels you can register, the second is the difference between the lowest and highest signal the photo sites can register.
Any camera manufacturer can make a camera with 16-bit recording. Or 24-bit, why not? But that will not change the DR because that depends on the photosites on the sensor itself, not on the analogue-to-digital conversion, even though A/D conversion takes place on the sensor too.
So you can't just judge the DR of new camera by it's RAW bit-depth. Just like can't tell the top speed of a car by looking at its speedo.
You want higher DR? Then you need something with bigger photo diodes. Couple that to high pixelcount, and you need something with a big slab o' silicon inside. That means something from Dalsa or Kodak, measuring 49.1 x 36.8 mm.
THe canon reps are not informed much in advance. I was told by one in honesty they only get notice a few days or a week before an announcement. So they likely were being truthful and only speculating

I just bought a new 1Ds Mark II 50 days ago. I talked to 3 Canon reps before I did and strickly asked them if there was an update coming soon. They said "haven't heard anything, probably early to mid 08." 50 days later, there it is on amazon.com. I would have held up on one of my biggest purchases of my life if I would have known there was something days away from being announced. My first reaction: boy was I pissed. Buying a camera of this price is an investment, and to know 50 days after purchase that it is out of date, really ticked me off. I am calm now.
Don't get me wrong thought, the 1Ds Mark II is a freakin masterpiece, just wish I had that larger screen, picture styles, and all the addition features for basically the same price would have been nice. Maybe I will trade my 30d and 1Ds Mark II in for one once all the bugs are worked out....Show more →
I know alot of folks are putting value into the the self cleaning oven aspect. In honesty years ago when there were all those expensive wipes and solutions, the difficulty factor in getting the sensor clean was a real issue. With visible dust products, cleaning is so quick and safe and effective, the self cleaning option while nice, by itself is no longer a major issue in my mind

True. There is no single outstanding feature that puts the Mk III over it's predecessor. But it's a nice added feature nonetheless. One of many.
And let's be fair. The Mk III has the same list price upon introduction as the Mk II had. So anyone who's miffed that it didn't make a giant leap forward can just think of this as the hidden N model.

Are low click count (< 5000) 1Ds2's selling for $5,000 holding their value well ? It doesn't seem so. Now is a great time to buy one.
Given they're currently around $7K new and will probably have a healthy rebate this fall, I wonder if used 1Ds2's will be able to hold $5K. I'm thinking they'll slide to around $4K, which is when I'll finally buy one.
I'm a happy owner of a new 1D mkIII and it serves my action-photography needs beautifully, but the 1Ds Mk III is so cool it makes me wish I needed one. Of course, I couldn't afford it anyway. (sigh)
I just go an email from Calumet announcing this camera
"EOS-1Ds Mark III
Breaking the 20MP barrier, the new 21MP EOS-1Ds Mark III features many new enhancements including dual DIGIC III processors delivering images at full frame resolution and advanced 14-bit A/D Conversion. This means in each color channel there are 16,384 distinct brightness steps from the darkest to brightest tone (vs. 4,096 previously) to ensure smoother tonal transitions and more natural gradations."
Id like to back up a bit and apologize to everyone.
I came off as being a bit harsh on my criticism for the new camera. Sorry for that.
Back to the features discussion. Im looking for
features that will improve image quality substantially.
Four megs wont do it. You have to quadruple megs
to have a 25% resolution increase. So 4 megs nets
me a 1 meg resolving increase. A three inch screen
wont do it. I clean my sensor twice per year so its a
non factor and wont improve my IQ either. With regards
to the focus system from the now defective MK3 only
time will tell. But neither my mk2 nor my mk2s had
any focus issues what so ever. So thats not going to
improve IQ either.
My biggest single nemesis is dynamic range or lack
there of. I'm constantly fighting that issue. If you shoot
landscapes and sunrise/sunset you know what I mean.
Its time to oull out the Lee ND grads and clean them off
and figure out if you need +2 or +3 or both. Then you
have that dark tree or mountain top line that looks real
bad and cant be fixed PP.
With regards to the statement that its impossible to
increase the dynamic range 3-4 stops thats not true.
They just did it with the MK3. It went from 7-8 stops to 11+ stops DR.
Maybe canon needs to looks at alternative ways to
combat photosite issues and dynamic range. They
had 3+ years to increase DR and failed to do so.
My current 1DS2 takes amazing pictures dont get me
wrong. But if I had one wish for this new camera and
one wish only it was improved DR. Im sure many 1DS2
owners will back me up on this.
A tourist snapshot taken with my 1DS2 and using no
less then 3 Lee ND Grads.

The price will keep declining if a lot of people decide they need the upgrade. I waited to buy my 1Ds and paid $4 K for it, and could have waited longer and paid less. No reason to expect the same economics for the 1Ds II.
The new camera is certainly offering a lot of great features, 20mp sounds really great, though it is not a huge step above from the 5D and 1Ds2. I really like the low weight 5d and I'm not going to trade it in against the heavy 1ds camera

That's tough news to hear. ...But in terms of what they said, early 08 and the street date - say 10-07 for the new camera, they are not that far off. The truth is is that the reps basically told you that the 1DS MkIII is as close as 6 months away!!! ...and knowing that the obsolete date was emminent and inside a close period of time, you still bought the MkII. Sorry, but in my book you have no one to be upset with.
Count me in on wanting better pixels not more. I will still have to fiddle with channel mixer to get good skin tones even using capture one.I did not need to do that with the Nikon D2H (with pocket camera resolution )
Another 4 mp for the 1Ds3 is actually meaningless except for the fact that it will be more difficult to get good image quality per pixel from the smaller pixel sites.
I wish that for this release they would have stopped the consumerish "how many megapixels does it have" and pursued the professional course of improved image color and dynamic range.

Andi - I used to feel the same way - and posted about it here. I still would like to see a 3D or chopped body 1 series - however, after shooting my new 1DIII beside the 5D, I will say that my opinion has shifted dramatically. The talk of better balance, great feel, ergonomics - all that stuff that 1 series owners have been talking about for ages - well, I now concede that it's all true. And I just spent the better part of a month carrying the 1DIII across Alaska, and the weight difference was never an issue for me, nor was the size-in-hand, even though I have relative small hands. The only size issue I have is size-in-bag. A pair of 5Ds is just easier to stow in a bag than a pair of 1 series bodies. Factor in the charger size, and it's quite significant in a travel set up. Still, I'd not trade the absolutlely excellent body build and functionality of the 1DIII for the packed-size benefits of the 5D, so I am quite happy that the 1DsIII will, for the most part, be identical to the 1DIII, operationally. It will make switching from one body to the other much easier.
