Back in the days when the 1Ds2 shipped you could pre-order it at B&H, and I did - had it in my hands the next day after its release. They did charge the card the moment I placed the order, and I was fine with that as I was convinced that my timing was perfect and I had no plans to cancel the order. Things have apparently changed...
Just went to the CPS Expo in Calgary yesterday and got a chance to play around with the 1D3, 1Ds3 and 40D! There are only two 1Ds3 in Canada right now and I had one in my hand =).
It was my first time handling the Mark3s and it is a lot lighter than the mark2s. Also I got a chance to speak with the EOS specialist regarding the AF issue. According to him, the 1Ds3's AF has been modified slightly from the 1D3 to make it more temperature resistant. This technology was actually borrowed from the 40D which has quite a sophisticated AF chip and the center double cross type AF sensor is supposedly even better than the 1 series AF sensors.

That statement has me reaching for my wallet to buy a 1Ds Mark 3 right away!

I'll Bet the President of Canon Canada is playing with the other one

If that's true then it really doesn't bode well for the problems with the 1D MKIII ever being fixed with anything other than a hardware revision.

I am astonished at the nit picking on this thread about the 1DS Mark II. I can say no bad word about mine and I use it all day long. Then to see the improvments they have now made to the 1DS Mark III. What an astonishing peice of modern machienery!!! I'm getting one! I can do nothing but have grattitude and praise for it.

Hey, this the the MKIII thread. If I'm going to spend 8K on a new model I feel I've purchased the right to feel superior to a 2004 model. Away with your talk of antiques!
As far as astonishing, if Nikon bests the 1 series with a less expensive camera I have the right to not be astonished with Canon. After three years they delivered the absolute minimum upgrade to both cameras. Well, I guess that is somewhat astonishing.

I would be astonished too if Canon did not update since 1d/1ds and launched 1d3/1ds3 now wouldn't you?
maybe this has been covered before (i don't know) but cant some of the "minimal" upgrade hoopla from canon be attributed to nikon?
i dont know, i never touched the stuff (nikon) before, but i always got the impression that people were jumping ship to canon because nikon always seemed to be dragging its feet in giving its customers something really useful and competitive. i know when i decided to "go digital" after college, the nikon brand never even entered my thoughts as a viable option, because they didnt have anything like the 1ds (and then there was the rumor of the 1ds2) which is how i ended up in the canon camp...
now thats just the general feeling ive gleened off of forums over the years and i could be completely wrong on that. i just assume that nikon HAD to knock one (or two) out of the park since, in some ways, they havent really shown up at times.
now, this is not to say that i wouldnt have loved even more from canon, but, as a business, probably (much more) beholden to the shareholders than actual photographers, what were they to do in this segment...compete against themselves?
im sure theyve got lots of awesome tech. tricks up their sleeve that theyve been holding back for just such an occasion. now (well in a couple years) we will finally get to see them. if a third brand really starts to get in the fray, then we'll really see some good stuff.
dont get me wrong, i would love for canon to act "humble and hungry" all the time and push themselves just for the sake of raising their own bar, but i just dont think a huge company like them, does that like a smaller company or individuals would. there has to be competition for them and, in many ways, its been lacking.
im not apologizing for canon, they dont need my help, i just think that nikon has been looked at as some sort of cool, hip, always give the customer what they want and then some, hero riding in on a white horse to save the day, with no one asking the question, "what took you so long?"
take my opinion for what its worth...im just ticked/worried about this shutter bounce im seeing in my 1ds2...
One of the companies that we use for the video side of our business are taking pre-orders for the Canon 1Ds Mark III for £5118.30 including VAT. I have no interest in this company other than it's where we purchase our video equipment from.
perhaps same scenario as 1dmkIII and 1dmkIIn
after the supposed mkIII issues, mkIIn's were hard to find and when you did they still wanted full pop for them.
