For any UK users around then dabs.com are taking pre-orders for £808.98, which is a big improvement on £899 that pretty much everyone else is charging.

12 pages ago somebody made the brilliant realization that since the SET button can be used to activate liveview in the silent mode, we now have a one-button MLU that also happens to allow live viewing!
It got lost in the "my country can beat up yours" routine, but that's a great little bonus.

Thanks for the pointer, timbop.
Excellent news.
I was trying so hard(successfully) not to get sucked into the flames that I missed the MLU thing.

The rep also said the 55-250 IS lens will be priced at 239 pounds.
With the current exchange rate - what's that? $9000?
But say the US street price is around $350 or so - that's still not a bad price for that lens. Granted, it's no 70-200mm L glass, but it could be one of those value lenses are winners.

Ultimately I'm concerned about purchasing Canon equipment optimally, which prompted the original question. If Canon will update the Rebel & xxD line every 12-18 months, I guess that means the 5D is more in the "pro" category because its update cycle is significantly less frequent thus far. But then again, look what happened with the 1DM2N...Aaaaah!
So when the 5D replacement comes, will it be a tweener I should avoid or a boat I should jump on? How will I know? Those will be the critical questions when it comes to my next purchase, followed closely by camara quality -- it will take a LOT to outdo my 5D. The image quality, IQ, and low-light capability have been absolutely phenomenal so I'll be reluctant to switch in any event. Hopefully then, Canon makes it clear when the time is right for upgrading.
With all due respect, I always have and always will fail to understand this line of thinking when it comes to cameras. Cameras enable you to make the best pictures you can. If a new camera is released that further enables your image making, you buy it. If it only incrementally enhances the ease with you make images, you don't. Your needs as a photographer should be the only source of measuring "optimization" in this context. Who cares what Canon's roadmap is? If the next revision of the 5-series has a killer feature that makes your photographic life easier, you buy it. Your perception of it as a "tweener" or "N" model in Canon's grand scheme is completely unimportant.
We need a backup camera, so I am considering the 40D. Had the 40D not been released, we'd be considering the 30D. The cameras we have still make great images, and I have no temptation to dump them or upgrade them. Your situation is that you have one camera that you're really happy with it. So use it 'till it dies. When it dies, fix it or replace it with something better for you. That you think you must to purchase new equipment based ont timing optimizations external to your needs as an artist, professional, or otherwise tells me that your gear is more fascinating to you than your art.

yeah, I think that happened to a lot of people avoinding the flamefest, which is why I repeated the observation. Unfortunately they destroy everything, including hidden treasure.

In case anyone's interested, there is a site that discusses the question of whether an upgrade to the 40D is worth it, along with explaining the technical differences. I found it interesting.
Ya got me. I have NO earthly idea what an xOD is - let alone why older versions - "they" - might be considered as relics. Can you please re-state this in ANY human language?
ASSUME?!?!?! I "assume" you know what assume REALLY means.
And, pray tell, why would you "assume" ANYTHING done by a camera company (That's like "assuming" the IRS will - or will not do - something weird/crazy/goofy with the numbers on your tax return!)
