Hey Kyle - does this feature only work with DPP when shooting raw or will Lightroom make use of this?

As far as I know only DPP is HTP 'aware'.

Can anyone comment on the real-world effect this has on shooting or the images that result? I'm guessing, to the user, this is a transparent upgrade but hopefully the results would be images that hit their intended metering target better and perhaps more completely use the wider DR?

In the end, you have ONE value to set - Amount of light or Exposure. There are millions of ways to come out with that one value and there will be as many arguments about whether that value is right for the scene.

When the scene is simple in terms of DR, even very simple partial or average metering works fine. When the scene is complicated with highlight spot areas, no computer can decide the exposure for us

I use spot metering ( 1 small zone ) if I want precise control on the exposure.
