I agree 110% with you. I know the variables that you defined so well (nice pics!) in your post, and I also prefer to use natural/available light in most situations.
But I think it may take some time to make this fine tuning and one may lose a baby smile while choosing the best aperture... and these "catchall advice" may be handy sometimes... Or, who knows, one can choose the middle term, using AF, almost-wide-open lens, playing with the ISO... A faster way than shooting babies at M mode IMHO... But, as always, that's just me

Just my personal opinion, but if I have 50mm, then i would choose 100/2(or 2.8 macro) for the next. If I have 35mm, then I would pick 85mm next...
Just a thought...
