I purchased a defective 10-22 from B&H a few months ago and asked for a replacement. I did not receive any UPS labels for free return shipping. Perhaps it's only if you paid for air delivery? Or perhaps you got lucky, as they mention nothing about free shipping in their return policies either.
I think you may be confused by the different vendors that sell on Amazon.com. Those are not Amazon.com products and you do not get free shipping nor 30-Day return policy. Vendors like Adorama sell things on Amazon.com, but their policies/shipping rates are independent from Amazon.com. If you purchase directly from Amazon.com, it will say "Ships and Sold by Amazon.com" right below the price and you get free shipping + 30 day return policy.
I've purchased numerous items from B&H as well and they do have polite customer service. However, if you compare return policies, Amazon's is definitely better. There's no need to call in either, you just go to your account, hit the return item button, and you can print the shipping label immediately. ...Show more →
I just returned a "potentially defective" lens for an exchange and they sent me a free mailer (via e-mail) to send the bad boy back; I even told the customer service the lens might actually be okay and still received a free mailer. FWIW, my original order specified ground delivery, the lens was sent via UPS via ground according to the tracking number, and was sent back to B&H via ground shipping this morning. All of my dealings with B&H have been very positive experiences because they were uneventful; I order something, they send it, the whatever arrives as promised; what is there not to like about this situation.

I wonder how this affects us on the other side of the world? I've always been very impressed with B&H but then, I've never had to return anything...
B&H is definitely a legitimate shop... and they do allow you to return items. I've never had them bait-and-switch on me or left me waiting for an out-of-stock item. I guess some people do get free return-shipping, but I didn't.
Return policy for B&H is 14 days vs Amazon's 30... so you have to decide which policy you prefer.
From my experience, Amazon's price on lenses are usually slightly cheaper than B&H due to free shipping... and I've had 0 problems dealing with Amazon. In a situation where price is equal, it comes down to 30 days of return policy vs. 14... I prefer 30.
I use Amazon for other stuff all the time. Amazon definitely has a more potentially confusing interface. For example, sometimes the purchase is handled by Google and the terms change in mid-stream... The free shipping entails no solid ETA of the merchandise; could be one week or one month, roll the dice...
In my example that B&H payed for returns and overnight delivered 3 different 85L's within a week... There is no way that Amazon would have/could have accomplished this within a week - even if they did have 3 85L's in inventory - B&H still offers a human inteface that can accomodate these things.
B&H's internet sales customer service is the best.

I'd be happy to address any of your friend's concerns.

Here's an update for ya:
BH just charged my credit card $14.50 for what I'm assuming is a return of my lens to them (even though it showed up with a blemish). I'm kinda amazed at this, and intend on calling them to find out why they'd sneak something like this in there. I'll let you know what happens.
This is unlikely. If you wish, e-mail your transaction details and I'll see what is what. Use Henryp
