I find it rather difficult to get excited about anything new from Canon lately. They apparently just throw stuff out on the market that doesn't work right. They don't say anything and don't fix anything and just expect people to buy it.(50L, 1D3) I hate to say it, but I guess for the most part people don't disappoint them.

sad, but true. I've been more than a little concerned over this as well. To balance that out, the 17-55 and 70-200/4IS are definitely success stories

Maybe it is just me, but I only find threads like these exercises in Rumor Theory Discourse 101; why are we all grinding gears over a dSLR that will be to the 30D like the 30D is to the 20D. That seems pretty darn predictable. For something like the MKIII, I could understand...but the 40D?

A larger viewfinder, plus the newer stuff the XTi has, added in the same shell with even just a small boost in speed and processing power seems like the most they could get out of it and come out with a really healthy profit margin, unless

I've already pre-ordered my 40D from Express Cameras. They don't know when it's coming out, but have locked in my price at $799! Even better, if it doesn't have an MLU button, they have agreed to add one for free! Might have to pay a bit extra for the body cap, strap, instruction book, sensor, and other accessories though.

Henry's in Canada has a 150 dollar rebate on the 30D. I was told the reason for this was that the 40D will be arriving here in Canada; in September or October.

No, I never said I knew that. I said it seems like the best they could get out of it for the time being and have it sell in large quantities *unless* it was something more revolutionary.

I heard from "somebody who knows" (a guy on Craig's List who's brother-in-law plays golf with a guy who's son works at Canon New Zealand's printer division) that Canon is going to announce a 18-200/2.8 IS in November. They're also releasing a 200/2.0 IS which will have a built-on hood and will have Canon's new purple stripe instead of red (purple is going to be used for all IS lenses from now on).

18-200 "F2.8"?, impossible, actully, I had never dream about 2.8, just "3.5-5.6" is enough for me

Dpreview huh ?
OK. If I take your word for it, at best he's lucky. At worst, he works for Canon. If he works for Canon you can bet your bippy he's under a non-disclosure clause and is risking his job to disseminate info prior to a release.

Nope, most reps will swear others to secrecy and fine peeps 100,000 for market sumthin or another. my boss new about the 1d3 6 months bfore it shelves and she said nothing.

I wouldn't read much into the 30D being discounted at the moment, or at least not as a sign its due to be replaced. The EU rebates have been knocking off €100/£65 on the 30D but also discounting the 5D and 400D and a glut of lenses and a couple of flashes too, most of which is kit that isn't due for any kind of imminent replacement. Besides, discounts on all but the 400D end in a couple of days.

Fair enough - I agree that what we have seen so far is educated speculation at best. However, lots of people make tons of money based on educated speculation - not that anyone other than canon will make money on the 40D. My point is that intuition and observation are actually fairly reliable when based on historical reality. Another way to put it is that history repeats itself, and with every generation of xxd and rebel they have had the same sensor size but the AF and ISO performance of the xxd have been better. Right now the XTi has

The 40D will be a 1.6X camera, if you are lucky it will get the 5D AF system, it will have 12Mp (my best guess). A new digital rebel will come out at 8 or 10Mp for $400 or less (it will be less than the Nikon D40).

Yes, I believe there is no question the 40D will be a 1.6x camera. According to intelligence info by Olympus it will have more than 10 Megapixels, however I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to have only 10.

According to that same intelligence it will not feature image stabilization in the body, nor will it be environmentally sealed.

It may feature Live-view.

What is not certain is when it will come out. I am pretty sure it will be available this year.

The only thing I worry about as I sit and wait to buy one, is if it'll have the sensor that is on the XTi. That will be a dissapointment. All I really want in a repalcement to my 20D are:

Features:
ISO in the viewfinder
a bigger (but still bright) display
spot metering for theater

Performance:
less high iso noise/higher dynamic range if possible.
upgraded focusing

Coming from a 300D which now feels like a prehistoric cam function/feature wise. I'll be satisfied with whatever the 40D will be/have as long as it has a big and bright viewfinder on par with the Nikons.

I see no reason for canon to switch to APS-H with the xxD line, why suddenly change product line strategies? Just gimme the bright viewfinder!

I would very much bet that it will NOT sport 12MP. The 1dm3 and rebel xti (400) have 10MP, so following the trends 10MP is where I'd put my bet. Canon does not want the semipro cam to outdo their latest big gun, nor do they want it to have the same MP as the 5D. The lineup come next spring will have 400D(10mp), 40D(10mp), 1dm3(10mp), 5Dm2(16MP), and 1dsm3 (20+MP). That's why the 5 has to wait - they don't want to overshadow the 1dsm2 yet nor steal press from the 1dsm3.

Since the 30D HAS spot metering, the 40D will as well.
My guess is 10MPix, since going to 12 will likely result into less DR and not as good high ISO performance. Canon will likely not trade higher resolution at the expense of IQ loss.
I just bought the 5D, so really I do not care that much, yet I am waiting for the 40D to be out so I can buy a cheap 30D as a back-up body instead of my 350D (more fps and same set of batteries).

My 1D4 with the full frame at the size of EOS 3 is so awesome - 22 FPS at RAW, and cross-type focus points throughout the entire frame! the entire back is now dedicated to the LCD live view and the wheel is on the front side of the camera.

The wheel on the front side of the camera would look pretty silly! .

The lens photo looks like something from DPR. The back of the camera looks like terrible PS junk. The control dial is next to the edge due to the crazy LCD display.
