Many years ago my father and I sailed from Catalina Island to half moon bay. I think that guy and a few of his friends made most of the trip right along the side of us. The phosphors at night were amazing. Brings back many memories.
I knew tonight would be exciting. My kids came running and said I have to see the clouds...my wife called to tell me the same. I went outside and saw this. (Pano of four frames shot with the 70-200 VR @ 70mm)
Later, the storm started in earnest. I decided rather abruptly to go to some gravel pit lakes to get some less obstructed horizon shots of the lightning. I ended up getting very nervous near the last shot. Not only was the lightning overhead, but the lakes went black, the rain increased dramatically, and I heard for the first time in my life that "freight train" sound people refer to when talking about tornadoes. Frankly, it scared the hell out of me. The last shot was never quite completed. I grabbed the camera about 15 seconds into a 30 second exposure, because within that first 15 seconds the freight train sound began, and had become deafening...just that quick...and I couldn't see anything. Fortunately I was right next to the car...which I literally jumped into it, and sped off. Leaves and branches were blowing through the air/ I got home and found out there were tornado watches and warnings in my area...felt stupid after I learned that. ( I never even checked) No tornado images, but this last shot I had to crop a bit...it had the dome light and part of my car dash in it from my hasty retreat. That black thing is a leaf blowing by...from relative calm to about 70 mph winds - bang just like that.
