It seems as though there are a lot of reports of 1Ds Mk II cameras with shutter bounce after less than 10K clicks. A poll of owners to see how common it is might be interesting to see.

I recently posted the same type of concern with my recently purchased, used 1DsmkII. Mine only had a little over 11,000 and exhibiting a slightly brighter edge at higher shutter speeds. The more research I did, the more it looked like shutter bounce. I ended up sending mine in to Canon. Two weeks later, with a bill of $208, I have a brand new shutter installed, and a very clean camera body.

Do not worry. I guess it's more common than most of us think. But it's completely servicable, and you will be happier in the long run.

Good luck,

John

I guess $200 is not soooo bad relative to the price of such an expensive camera, but it shouldn't be necessary and I can't help thinking that with my luck the camera would be gone for two months rather than two weeks. All three Canon items I've had serviced have been gone for at least that long.

I reckon this also reinforces the case for getting an extended warranty with each camera you buy - one that can be transferred should you sell the camera. Apart from covering such costs it would be comforting for the buyer.

I'm a CPS member and my Canon repairs in the UK have usually only taken a few days

I just got off the phone with Canon Korea and it's not looking good. The quoted me KRW 474,000 or roughly US 505 at today's exchange rate to replace the shutter. They also said they need to see the body and that the price may change upon proper inspection.

I told them that the body has roughly 4000 actuations and that the service charge seems a tad ridiculous for a pro body that is rated for 150,000. The rep didn't seem too concerned, though he was polite, and said that Canon Korea doesn't warranty at all anything that wasn't imported by them or LG Canon (Canon's former Korean partner). As I suspected, Canon Korea isn't Canon at all, but rather simply a third party that has probably paid some franchise fees or something to Canon in exchange for their technology (testing and repair equipment) and exclusive rights to call themselves Canon Korea, which apparently means that they could care less about anything they haven't imported themselves. The good news is that they'll do the service, but on the other hand I'm not going to catch any breaks.

Unfortunately I have to start contacting people within Canon to try to remedy this. There's no way that a shutter replacement should be way more than double what it costs in the US.

I had a similar issue with my 1DM2 some months back. Here's a thread at DPR where I posted the problem and the eventual solution courtesy of Canon- Manila.

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1032&message=19650490

The posted sample pics are already gone, but these were very similar to the OP's examples. I think you don't need a new shutter, just a slight adjustment in the shutter assembly.

Romy, was your camera originally a Philippines warrantied item or was it grey market? I have a feeling Canon Korea would be much more sympathetic to my situation if the camera was originally theirs. Also, I've read your threads over at DPReview and wonder if you can explain a bit more about what kind of adjustment they made to your shutter.

Hi Steven,

My unit was warrantied by Canon-Philippines, but was already about two months out of warranty when the shutter died at 11K clicks. Canon-Manila replaced the shutter for free. Shortly later, I noticed that the new shutter had a "bounce" issue. Canon again replaced the shutter for free (second new shutter after the original).

Still, the bounce was there so the technician consulted Canon-Singapore and it turned out something in the shutter assembly needs adjustment at each shutter speed setting to ensure proper shutter closure. Canon-Manila had to ship a special tool from Canon-SG to do this. When the tool arrived, it took Canon-Manila only a day to solve the issue.

IIRC, the technician opined that if we had done this adjustment with the first new shutter replacement, he believed that the issue would have been solved without the need for a second new shutter.

Romy

EDIT - Let me put in a caution that if your shutter's issue is similar to mine, shutter replacement won't solve the bounce.

Thanks, Romy. This is all very good information that I will bring up with Canon Korea, whom I'm sure would replace my shutter for free or a marginal service charge if the camera were theirs to begin with. It's grey market though, so I'll have to plead my case a little harder and may not end up convincing anyone here that Canon should do good by replacing the shutter for a lot less than what they've already quoted me.

Well, if the issue can't be resolved by Canon-Korea, you might need to take a holiday to our nearby islands. We probably have one of the best Canon service in the world, and they're already familiar with this problem and its solution. I believe they still have the special tool too....

Thanks for the invitation, Romy. I'd love to go, but I think the flight would end up costing me more than a local repair.

Well, it's official. I need a new shutter. The guy at the service centre was quite nice about it and is only going to charge me KRW 379,000 or about US $400 to replace it, which is what he would charge for an out of warranty Canon Korea shutter replacement.

He knew what it was right off the bat and said that he could try to repair it, but that that rarely works. This runs counter to what Romy has said, but I'm kind of gearing up for the charge.

Yes, just go for it, you can't have a camera you can't trust. Are they able to give you a precise actuation count too for that amount of money?

Any update Steven? Curious on how the repair turned out...

Hi Romy,

I don't have much to report back at this time as I haven't had a whole lot of time to take the camera down to the service centre. It definitely needs a new shutter. The "bounce" is intermittent, but it's getting progressively worse. I have also been looking around the house for things to sell in order to fund the shutter replacement. I should have some time this coming week, and the repair centre said it would take about three to five days to complete the surgery.

It's on the way? Nice! Should have it soon. And it was for a sweet price too. The charge to show you where the service centre is, and then to translate for you, is going to be a bit steep though. Actually it might equal the price of the new shutter I have to get.

Okay, I've just returned from the service centre with a new shutter. The surgery took 4 days and cost 364,000 won (US$383), and the problem is obviously now gone. Interestingly they didn't reset the shutter count. The camera went in with about 4600 shots on it and came out with about 4800 according to CanCount. Interesting, and this kind of bugs me because I'd like to have the camera reporting zero again. But anyway, I'm very pleased with the service.

I'm happy to have the 1Ds working up to specs again. It cost more than I wanted to pay, but what are you going to do? You can't have a camera with a shutter that's on its last legs; it just wrecks your confidence when you're using the thing.
