In case anyone was wondering how the MkIII looked in compared to the 5D for skin tones, here's my very unscientific test. Same lens(85 1.2II), white balance, lighting and child that had other plans. I don't see a huge difference, maybe a little more noise in the shadows of the nose on the 5D. Also I have been having a tough time with the AI servo on my camera. It's almost like the focus is so accurate that if you move the focus point off your subjust just a wisker it will look for somehting else to track. I have been experimenting with the custom functions with little success. It has been so much trouble that I have a replacement coming. I kow my MkII was not nearly this hard to track liilt league baseball with. As you can see though the camera takes tack sharp photos in one shot mode with a very sharp lens. I'm shooting a wedding this weekend with it(with a friend I'm just going along to test the camera) I'll let you all know how the flash and high ISO work in that enviroment.
I set CFN III-2 to slow. I'm not sure if anyone above has tried that or if that will help. I can't comment as I've never shot birds with a 1D2 and have no experience to compare to.
FWIW, I tried that setting on my Mark II and it lost me a few good shots before I killed it again. Once you lose focus, it can make it a lot harder and slower to reacquire it.
I usually do not use all 45 points for flight shots unless the bird is against a blue skly since I find the system gets confused with backgrounds. I use center point with assist (I forget what CF it is on the MKII - I think CF 13). Works very well. I am going to try to go out again this week with some different settings to see what I can get before I send it back to the dealer.
No problem if they are in demand for the straps I would be glad to part with mine for a small price, its all about style no? , It must be one of the most uncomfortable straps , well besides all of canons other factory straps .I'd use a good padded Op/tech USA strap any day. I just finished a two day wedding in horrible light and the camera did flawless. Thank You Canon and please rebate some of my money.
I have really only tested my camera a short while but here is a link to some LAX pix from Sunday all with 400 2.8IS - all I can say is WOW!: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/544122
BTW - acquired my M3 through Penn Camera here in the Washington DC Metro area and serial number is 519xxx
My brother and I just picked our m3's up from Norman's camera in Kalamazoo around noon, Not much time to fool with it till tomorrow but it does feel lighter in the hand (mark2n)
here's something I'm curious about - in-between ISOs. the 20D/5D fake the 1/3 stop ISO settings in firmware. I've read before that the the 1 series have real hardware implementation of 1/3 stop ISOs.
Can someone run this test? Leave the lenscap on, set to manual exposure (say 1/60th, f8), RAW, no noise reduction, and run through every ISO setting. Cut and paste a central crop on all the RAWs, boost the noise with a big positive exposure change, set noise reduction and black clipping to zero. Open in PS, 'select-all' and read the info in the PS histogram display (alternatively, use the noise analysis in Noise Ninja etc).
Just picked mine up today... All in all pretty darn happy and about 5g's short.
Keep in mind I took these as a quick test nothing scientific here folks.
Samples below:
100% crop with no sharpening

Model Canon EOS-1D Mark III
Focal Length 300 mm
Exposure Time 1/1000 sec

Tha Tamron 12-24 appears to vignette more than the the Sigma 10-20 at 12 and 10 respectively. About where do these two lenses stop vignetting, 14 and 12 respectively?
And what about the Sigma 12-24?
Sorry if this leans more toward general 1.3 crop question, but perhaps the 1D3 would be slightly different. I guess with all the error 99 quirks, it would also be interesting if any one has had errors appear when using these 3rd party lenses.
I say to those of you who are having trouble with AI servo and focusing give it some time.
I'm coming off of a 30D to the 1DMK111, after quite a bit of tweaking and a lot of frustration I have finally figured my camera out, I think, a diamond in the rough.
These shots were all shot with the 1DMK111 with the 400 5.6, Not the greatest shots, I just wanted to get something up to show off....lol
Dude!
You gotta be kidding me! These are sweet.
Let's talk settings because we are feeling this thing out. Did you go to the slow AI adjustment setting? Did you use all focus points?
Though the backgrounds in 1,2, and 4 could have caused problems, they all look tack sharp. Nice job. I'm all ears...
My 1D3 seems to be functioning fine, but it will take time for me to figure out which settings to use for tracking small birds.
I did lose the dust cap that covers what Canon calls the Extended System Termimal. The little round cap is located just above the battery compartment. The first time I lost the cap, I found it on the floor. I screwed it in pretty tight but it came out again and I never found it. I called Canon and they sent me two replacement dust caps for about $4.00 each.

I lost that cap the first day. I need to give Canon a call. I wonder if I can buy the caps by the pound?
Don't claim to be an airshow guru, get to shoot one about once a year or so. Shot an airshow with 1DMKII last year so have a little experiance to compare with 1DMKIII. Shooting planes is not as challenging as shooting birds in flight, but does have some similarities. When I first looked at the RAW files, was disappointed, slightly overcast and slightly into the sun, dark blue planes on a light hazy background, a big challenge to the DR. Using PSCS3 for conversion, was able to use the sliders and pull up the shadows and lessen the highlights and get acceptable results. I attribute this to the 14 bit files and improvements in ACR. Here is a small gallery of the shots I liked, comments / criticism appreciated.
