i also plan to buy a S5pro in the near future. The S5 shots look nice. first i was just wondering: isn't this really a WB issue? but when i look at the clothes they seem to have the same color and the difference is just in the skintones. that's quite amazing...
agree with poisonpill.. fuji's skintones look so nice compared to D200. I dont really get why D200 colors are so "off" like more reddish/yellowish :P also quite oversaturated why is it so? I wonder if it'd be same thing with D2x/h?

I have similar "problems" with my D2Hs. Darker skinned peoples' skintones get a yellow cast. I put quotes around "problems" because it's not a hassle to fix and by shooting in raw I can tweak it easily. But if I wanted the ease in getting great shots OOC and in JPG, the S5 seems to have it beat handily.
Perhaps the appropriate thing to do is contact your country's Nikon rep. w/ examples of the skintones, explain why you think they're off etc. If enough feedback gets back to Nikon Japan perhaps things will change.
I know it's a hassle, but customer feedback does make a difference.
Alot of people are comparing mainly skin tone color, but I was really impressed with the sharpness. The difference between the fur neck piece in the comparison above is very different between the two. You can see the individual strands of hair from the S5. The Nikkor f/2.8 80-200 is my sharpest lens next to my Nikkor f/2.8 16mm. And here is a $450 Tamron pushing the limit.
No disrespect here, but the Nikon shot (talking about the fur here) may just be very slightly OOF compared to the S5. Critical focus on fine detail is measured in millimetres, and even fractions of millimetres sometimes.
That Tamron has a deserved reputation for sharpness, from what I have read, but so does the Nikkor.
I have the S5 myself, and I would be delighted to find that it is sharper than the D200, but that is not what I am expecting. I hope I am wrong!
Does anyone here have the photosite sizes of these two cameras? Thom's site says the D200 photosites are around 6 microns (compared to the D2H's 9.something), but what about the S5? cheers, kl
i've been thinking of buying a D2Hs or D2X and selling my D200, but after seeing your pics, and playing with a friends Fuji S2, i decided to buy a S5 today. i am EXTREMELY impressed with the IQ.
playing around when i got home, i shot this one @ 3200, 1/3", f8 using a 50/1.8, Mode F2
For my taste, the colour is over-saturated, but the image is great.
My early tests suggest you have used F3 (film mode three), with increased sat. on the colour. Is that right? And aren't the jpegs a different ball game to the D200's?
I am going to write up a bit of a review here, esp. the handling and setting differences between the two cameras. I definitely like mine, and I think it's very likely that you will really like yours.

*edit* the technical guy at Fuji made a point to me that these tests cannot be really valid. Since the lighting, subject, and cameras were different when they were shot. I just tossed these up since most were around the 75-80mm range. I'd need much more similar lenses on the same body.

Well, reading this thread from start to finish confirmed the difficulty I have been having with Nikon skin colors. Other colors look fine, but skin tones drove me nuts! They were generally too yellowish/redish and difficult to correct in photoshop. My baseline is Fuji Reala (print) skin tones and the examples above look very close indeed. Thanks for the real-world approach. Its a refreshing change from the all too technical approach taken by most on-line reviewers.
