Stopped down to f8 and 11, the olympus is outstanding corner to corner for image sharpness, and great in the distortion dept.

Maybe it's better to compare it to the oly21mm...

It's not even close. It's best to compare it to the original 16-35L and 17-40L, and maybe to some of the Canon primes, but I am pretty sure it cannot compete with the Zeiss or Oly. I am personally very disappointed with the Mark II, but YMMV of course.

Better be careful you may be attacked for such statements .
Seriously though if you really want edge to edge, the zoom is not the best optic. However, one thing you can do with the zoom is shoot alittle outside your frame of interest and then just do some cropping. Ok some will state it defeats the purpose of FF etc but I have done that before.

I am on my second 16-35mm vs1 and I went through three copies to get the first one, and five copies to get the second. The second lens is a lot better than any of the other lenses that I tested. It is also the lens that I used for my comparison with the CZ17-35mm, which by the way was the first of that lens that I bought. FYI, the CZ's have little or no variation between the seven copies that I have tested.

I had high hopes for the Version II lens, but the MTF was not indicative of true performance as it is computed rather than tested. I will probably move up to the 16-35mm II once Canon gets past the rush and QC improves...

Perhaps this is a foolish question, but I am serious. Do you working pros buy three copies and pick the best one like the rest of us, or do you get lucky each time? The unit to unit variations can drive one bonkers.

I am keeping my 16-35L II. It's not perfect, but it's very good (at least my copy is). It matched my Zuiko 21 f3.5 (a good copy) in sharpness at 21mm. It beat my very good 24-105L at 24mm and 28mm (the 24-105 was better at 35mm). It beat a good 17-40 throughout the range.

It's not in the class of a Zeiss 21, but it's a big improvement for Canon, and good enough to be a main landcape lens for me.

Could be, Mark. Unfortunately, Canon may still suffer from sample variation even with this new lens.

My thoughts exactly. You are lucky to have a good copy, Mike!

Relax. Mark's opinion here is just as welcome as yours. Look at his history - he's been around FM a long time and been a great contributor. Don't be so pompous.

My thoughts exactly. This thread has been very helpful and has reminded me to be cautious when attempting to upgrade because of these variations in lens quality. I've got a fairly good copy of the 16-35 v.1 which performs quite well when stopped down a bit on my Ds2. I'm wary of trading it for a poor copy of v.2, but try I must.

Thanks for posting all the samples. I have one in order, my 16-35 I was such a disappointment at the wide end, I think the II can only be better

My 16-35 was also weak on the wide end. I sold it and bought a 17-40, which is much better in that respect. I will likely, however, try the new 16-35.

I just recieved my 16-35L II today and a couple of casual shots reveal it to be much, much better than the 17-40L that it replaced. The corners on my copy are better at f5.6 than the 17-40L at any f-stop. I'll absolutely keep this lens.
I hope you all find one as good.
Cheers,
Sam

Hi Mike,

Do you think you would have time to post some comparisons with the Oly 21? Also, do you have a copy of the Zeiss 28/2.8 to compare with? I really need to add a zoom to my kit and I'm trying to decide between the 16-35 II and 24-105. I rarely need wider than 21, but it would be nice to have for those occasions.

thanks.

Well, I just picked up an 82mm filter - now I guess I have to buy a 16-35II to go with it...

I like your style....

Just ordered the Mk II as well. Should be here Tuesday, after which I will shoot some comparisons with the "old" 16-35. I've seen enough on this thread to convince me that the improvements are worthwhile (though I will compare to prove it to myself).

i just talked to the guys at Singh-Ray. Not good news for me. They won't have any 82mm circ polarizers avail for at least 3 months.
I've ordered a Moose warming polarizer from Adorama, and they are also back ordered. Was hoping to have everything for my trips to banff and Jasper to take the new lens for a test drive.

khurram, B+W makes a great 82mm circular polarizer http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=search&Q=&b=109&a=27_308&a=35_201&mnp=0.0&mxp=0.0&cmpsrch=&cltp=&clsgr=&Submit.x=18&Submit.y=7&Submit=Go&shs=&ci=115&ac=

thanks for the link Tom. I thought about getting a B+W - I used to buy them exclusively until i got more into wide angles and switched over to hoya Pro1's for my skylight/uv/polarizing filters. I like B+W filters, but there slim filters do not have front threads, so i am unable to attache my Lee wide angle hood that i use for my ND grads.

I'm waiting for my Moose warming polarizer - made by Hoya (back-ordered) and I really like Singh-Ray's Color combo polarizer, which is a combination of a color enhancer and a warming polarizer. That is the only filter i'll buy that doesn't have the front threads for the slim mount - mainly bcoz Singh-Ray is the only one who makes it.

If B+W or Heliopan made a thin mount filter that still had front threads, they would be a no brainer for me, but since the only slim filter they make do not have front threads, their use is somewhat limited for me, as i tend to use ND Grads a lot for my landscape photography.
