These charts to me look like a stock tanking. I wonder how these charts really relate to images in the real world. In the meanwhile short the dashed red lined one.

I suppose I might take them too seriously...but as far as I can tell, when they come from one source (like Canon only), they can be compared fairly reliably to describe the qualities that will show up in large print or when pixel peeping at 100% or for enlargement beyond that. Conversely, they can also tell you how hard you'll have to work with an image in post process.

Grant,

Thanks for doing this, I asked because I wanted to illustrate the difference between actual and theoretical. I owned the 17-35 for several years and it was very good on film... On the FF the corners did not do well, as the real mtf suggested.

Beeman, a 20/1.4 would be a sweet addition, and it would sell well!

I agree that this lens is at least as good as the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS that Canon will have a real winner! Personally, I would have loved to see the EF-S lens in an EF mount. However, I do plan to buy the new 16-35 lens and sell my Tamron 17-35 (though it has been a decent lens on my 20D).

I know it's not much, but I took that little shot with the new 16-35 II at the PMA
yesterday... They let me shoot with it and my 5D, so I guess it will be in stores
very soon... I hate to call it "a test", typical convention conditions etc, but
it actually looks very good. I tried f2.8, this shot is f4 16mm.
The lens is larger, but still very light and compact.

WOW! That's at f/4?!? I'd have to stop down to f/9 on my old 16-35 to get that! Man, and I almost talked myself out of this lens....

Hi and thanks for this preliminary image sample, Andrew! Really appreciated. I was wondering if you could post some crops (center, middle and corner) even at f2.8 if you have some... I know it's not a "test" but we can start to make an idea about Canon's efforts in building up an improved wide-angle (zoom&prime) lenses product line.

Ciao,

Emanuele

I do have RAWs from my 16-35 II shots, but they are all ISO 800 with horrible
convention lights, dark ceiling, neon ads etc.
What I noticed is a very slight CA on some corner bright lights, would expect
much, much more of that in those conditions... And I'm talking f2.8 (!),
f4 looks very good. But I don't want to evaluate this lens based on those
pictures. The lens is only days away from hitting the stores guys

Looking good! Can't wait to see more pictures, reviews, tests, etc in the next few weeks. Anybody has any info/news about this lens, please post it here!

Be aware, that there is a big jump from crop 1.6 to FF, in terms of lenses and corner sharpness. I made that switch a good while ago, and I took my lesson.

How many days away? It's not even listed on B&H yet.

I don't understand your point. Bobby Tan already has a FF 5D

Amazon is claiming March 31. We'll see how reliable that is. My guess would still be end of the month though.

I've placed an order with Amazon ($1,599) and one with Tallyn's ($1,479) - both with free shipping. With a bit of luck, I may be able to pick one up for less in either Hong Kong or Singapore when I am there at the end of March.

It's amazing that BH doesn't have this listed yet. It's also amazing that with the $2K in lighting/grip equipment I've bought in the last 2 weeks, BH has had a TON of gear listed as "Out of Stock"
