Re: the RRS plates, as of late last week, they were awaiting receipt of a Mk III to take measurements from - and it'll be 2-3 weeks after that before they have production plates ready... So, probably about a month out at this point, if possibly not longer...
i called RRS yesterday morning and was told that the camera alloted to them is in - but they haven't actually taken delivery yet.
THey are taking names for pre-order, and i added mine to it. However, they did not take my credit card number or anything at this point. I was told it would probably be 2-3 weeks befor the L plate is available. I just got my camera monday and am hoping that the L plate will be ready for my trip to Big Sur (June 13). I'm hoping that since RRS is in California, i can get it shipped to my hotel - it will suck having to pay the california state tax - but if i can have the plate for my trip, i'll be happy.
Don't know why but it always seems like i'm waiting right down to the wire for equipment for my trips. Last year when i decided i better get a backup for my 1D2N, i was waiting for both the Xti and the L plate for that for my trip to the Southwest and the tetons in the fall. I ended up picking up a camera close to Salt lake city and having the L plate shiped to my hotel in Moab.
I own the L-Plate for my Mark II which I will keep since the Mark II will now become my back-up camera to the Mark III. I sent an e-mail to RRS and told them that I want to purchase the L-Plate for the Mark III when it is available. They respoded by sending me an order, complete with all the information they had on file when I purchased the Mark II plate. Their item number is: B1DMIII-L with the description of : L-Plate for Canon 1D Mark III and the price of $183.00 plus UPS ground charges of $9.15 to New Jersey. The ship date field is blank. They have not charged my credit card account which I assume they will do when it is shipped. Since they already had all my information, I guess this counts as my pre-order.
Reading these posts over at another site is making me wonder.
Are the MkIII's coming with highlight priority on?
I noticed in the manual that one of the items in the "Before you start" section is how to restore the camera to the default (p. 49), which is also right after the low-level formatting of SD cards, also on p.49
Here's their comment on low level formatting: "If the writing speed to the SD card is slower than usual....."

Highlight prioity comes off from the box. Everything is set to "0" in custom functions except a couple of cf's that don't have a "number" choice (0,1,2,3,4...etc). An example of this is CFIII-2 which is tracking sensitivity for AF. It comes as a sort of five position slider from "slow" to "fast". Five positions can be selected, with default being midway.

Thanks for the info - I just got off the phone w/ them with the same story. And, I have the same issue about timing w/ new gear, going to Yellowstone at the end of the month
I am getting my 1DmarkIII tomorrow from Jody at Robert's Imaging. Yea!
Have a question. For those who have done some lens calibration, how did you handle zoom lenses? Did you check near, middle, and far and was the offset consistent? How much difference was there? Any hints? TIA
are you SURE that works. I just tried it, it didnt work. when do you type get10back? Do you type it under GOOGLE checkout, regular checkout, paypal checkout? or in the code box in the shopping cart? None of those work. There aren't even enough spaces to type get10back in the code box in the shopping cart.

For those with Dell accounts, I ordered a 1d Mark III with June 14 Delivery for $4100 today. It will be interesting to see when that arrives. :-)
How did you get that price, Dell charged me $4266 out the door, my ship date is supposed to be 5-31-07 but I'm not holding my breath, I am praying a lot though
I'm leaving for Brooks Falls Katmai AK. July 6th, I sincerely hope that I will have a camera by then.
I wonder how many cameras orders will be canceled due to multiple orders or last minute finance restraints

The SD bottleneck seems to be the Extreme III 4GB SDHC cards I, and others with slow test results, have used to get the poor results. A brand new Extreme III 4 GB SDHC out of the box, low level format, still yields over a minute for buffer clearing. I'm picking up a 2GB Extreme III SD this afternoon after seeing results that it does indeed clear the buffer at the expected speedy rate. Several people posted results on-line that that card takes between 24 and 27 seconds to clear the buffer, whereas my Extreme III and IV CF cards take in the mid to high 30 second range.
So far the SDHC speed, inability to use the AF-ON button to access a home AF point, and inability to use the multi-controller for direct (other than registered) AF access are my only gripes with the body. I certainly don't consider the SDHC issue major, but I do hope it is addressed in a firmware update. I've sent an email to Canon regarding this issue, and I'll see what they say.

Greaaaaaaaaaaaaat. Which card did I buy to match the CF? ExIII 4GB SDHC.
Maybe it's the actual SDHC card? Any other "exceeds Class 6" SDHC cards out there that anyone has tested?
I know Transcend makes one, and Lexar has announced some, but Adorama doesn't have them listed. And Transcend's 4GB high speed SDHC is backordered with Adorama as well.
And now it looks like my camera will be coming the week I'm on my trip and would really really want it. I may have it overnighted to me.

You don't find clicking the multicontroller an adequate way to return to the center AF point?
As far as SDHC, it seems that this is really a third type of card. It shares the external physical characteristics of an SD card, but thats not a reason to assume that it should have similar performance. A class 6 is six MB per second. So if real world is half of that - 3-4mb second - that is about what you guys are finding.
I'm backing up jpeg only, so 8gb CF and 2 gig SD seems about right. If WB is better with this camera backing up jpeg doesn't seem too much of a risk, especially with quality to 10 and no sharpening.

If you are an adventurous type, you can preorder one from ritzcamera via shop.com. Shop.com is currently offering a 10% rebate if you are a first time user of their site. Ritzcamera is taking orders for $4499. So, you can save $450 by using shop.com. However, the buyer ratings of ritz cameras and shop.com are horrible. YMMV.
Of course, Ritz Camera happens to be basically the largest retailer in the entire nation, owning literally hundreds of retail outlets under the names of Ritz camera, Wolf Camera, Kit's Camera, etc.
I just called the Salt Lake City Ritz (Inkleys) just to see what they have been doing.
What I was told was they have fullfilled aprox 500- prepaid orders, and the are awaiting another 500, to complete their prepaid order-list.
If I ordered today, probably about a month out. $4495.00
I never would of guessed about such extreem quanities.
