I would love to jump from 20D to MkIII, but I believe I will leave the III to you guys and settle for the MkIIn for now. Please work out the bugs...as I will look forward to buying the second version
Went to Melbourne Australia PMA and was told by the Canon people that first shipment is 28th May. Demand here is so great that it would take 5-6 months to fill.
rscheffler: But it also seems to be a more Canadian way to do things, if that's an apt description, rather than an outright first come first serve distribution.
If I start hearing about "Canadian way" even for camera distribution, I would just give up on understanding the mentality of some people in this country (of Canada).
It is completely unfair to treat one group of buyers differently and shows once again the arrogance of Canon marketing group. The whole 1D mkIII release is just a big fiasco. Time to go.

Just shut up and buy the damn camera when you can. All the rest is whining. Who cares how you feel about it? Certainly not Canon. They will get the cameras out when they can.
They are only able to produce them in limited quantities. They do not want to sell them until they are reasonably glitch-free. Remember the Kodak DCS-SLR?
It is a pro camera, built for pros. Well heeled amateurs can buy one too, but just because they have the coin to do so doesn't give them any "rights".
Demand looks too great to cope with at first to me - hence the indecision on pricing, I think - they found that demand was far higher than they had projected, so are trying all sorts of ways to distribute what they can make, including in some markets giving priority to pros, who after all are dependent on their cameras to make their living so perhaps deserve some extra consideration, and pricing mechanisms too.
There could have been more delays to production than CAnon expected due to the AF issues Dave at IR noted.

Would that be completely unfair to say that they (Canon) increased that demand (or interest) as far as amateurs are concerned, by suggesting initially the price of $4000? I can say for sure that if they had said $5000 in the White Paper, I would not have been equally excited. Let's not forget that some people made some decisions as far as equipment is concerned at the time of the announcement. I know that June can be still considered to be Spring but this is a bit of a stretch for some.
Actually considering the value of the dollar right now, I'm not surprised the price went up - it would have been based on the cost from Japan, so our dollars don't buy as much now.
I second that Nill, sounds like my 9 yr old.... its not fair. life is not about fairness. This is a professional body geared and marketed towards the pro. The fact that average consumers can afford it is not canons issue.

This is a Pro camera and I would imagine a number of Pros will buy them but I'm willing to bet that Canon will sell more of these cameras to non-Pros than Pros.
So who is more important to Canon?
My guess is the Pros because they are their advertising base on the sidelines throughout the world. They asked the Pros what improvements they wanted on the new 1DMKIII not consumer Joe.
I have one on order and it will get here when it gets here. Until then I'll continue to shoot with what I have.

And for us student photojournalists with neither money nor professional clout, we'll wait for the well heeled amateurs to buy them, get bored, and sell them on the used market.
Ok guys, I've been shooting for a week in Hawaii and have lost all concept of time and a connection to the internet for 7 days. Can someone give me the highlights of the week? Any ideas on availability some concrete pricing yet?

FWIW there was a thread over on DPR where someone posted the Canon increase was due to the yen going up vs the dollar. Someone then posted that wasn't actually the case and that the dollar is just a bit stronger vs the yen then last year. Canon either decided to charge more or someone just blew it initially with the white paper, either way I don't think it's a dollar vs yen thing.
