I suspect that Tallyn's will honor their lower $4350 price, at least until the end of April. That's when they had originally said that the lower price was good until.

I suspect that $4495 is MAP . . . but they can surely still SELL it at the lower price. I know of at least 3 stores that will be selling in the $4275 - $4350 range.

I think the dates are just guesses at this stage in Canada. I have checked with both Vistek (Toronto and Calgary), as well as The Camera Store. Depending on who you ask, and who those people ask, you get very different answers. I have been told end of April, start of May, sometime May and sometime June.

This was very similar with the 16-35L II. Despite that the Camera Store had already had two shipments in some of the staff was saying they don't expect the lens until May and the week before they got the lens they were saying May.

I got my lens at Vistek and two days before i got my Lens, Vistek in Toronto was saying it would be at least another month. Whereas, Vistek in Calgary wasn't sure bcoz a week before i got my lens, they said it didn't look like there purchasing department had even placed any orders for the lens.

In Canada it seems that Canon Canada is really doing a lousy job at providing any information to retailers. So until someone actually gets a camera, I think it is pretty much useless even trying to speculate when the camera is in. It's best to wait until someone actually gets one.

I am number 3 on the list at vistek in calgary, but if i had to guess, i think The Camera Store will probably be the first one to get the 1DIII in Canada (possbily due to the link with Rob galbraith), and it will probably a week or two after that before anyone else gets the camera.

If i recall correctly, that was the same way with the 24-105L lens a few years back.

A first look at the Canon EOS-1D Mark III
Sunday, April 22, 2007 | by Rob Galbraith

"Based on our experience shooting with a preproduction body, however, we've put together an article that cherry picks a few topics to cover in detail, provides observations about a handful of other aspects of the camera and includes a collection of both reduced and full resolution image files so that you can see what we've been seeing in the photos rolling off the EOS-1D Mark III's CMOS sensor."

Michael, I've just been swamped for the past couple days. I'm in the middle of my exams but I'll be done on Wednesday. I'll try to update the page with all the newest info then.

I'll also be off on a trip to Hawaii Apr 27-May 8 so additional updates will probably be delayed during that time.

Excellent writeup. They state one stop additional dynamic range? I've been digging deeper into the white paper recently, the autofocus changes, specifically the sensors used, look to be the most dramatic difference to birders.

Gee, Imaging Resource and R.Galbraith got their hands on pre-production cameras for lengthy trials - Guess it's true that DPreview and Canon are no longer BFF's

What a great read! The 1DmkIII seems amazing.

Now I can only wonder what the next 1DSmkIII/5D will look like!

Thanks for the link. Looks like we are finally getting some real information now. I think when the 1D2N and the 5D was introduced Rob Galbraith's site had similar information that accomponied the ANNOUNCEMENT of the camera, so this time around, it seems Canon has really tried to restrict the flow of information.

Care to share with a fellow Texan where it can be had for less?

This quote from the RobG article is disturbing:

" In the preproduction body we have, the autofocus doesn't work right. When it was issued to us, Canon made it clear that the autofocus wasn't working right in this generation of preproduction camera and/or firmware and provided the assurances you'd expect about how it will be working properly by the time the new model hits the streets. And that's likely to be the case. But it's not guaranteed to be the case, so please keep that in mind before you hand over your VISA card to your pro camera dealer."

Call these guys:

http://www.allenscamera.com/

Not sure how long their list is yet. I believe he told me that they had 300 on order, though. He wasn't final on his price, but he gave me an estimate, and it's at or below the Tallyn's price.

Or, these guys:

http://www.pitmanphotosupply.com/

I'm #5 on their list . . not sure how long their list is, or how many they have on order. They seemed pretty firm on their pricing, and it's better than Tallyn's by a bit.

Caveat: The pricing for both places MAY be only for those who have pre-ordered. I can't guarantee that ordering from them now will give you that price. I suspect you'd get it, but you'll just have to call and ask.

Also, I'm not sure how fast either of these places will get theirs, or how long their current lists are.

I've never dealt with Allen's Camera, but I know of people who have, and they seem like a great shop. I actually spoke to the owner when I talked to them.

I have dealt with Pitman before . . that's where I got my 1D-II's.

Why? I would find it much more disturbing if Canon said "Here's a pre-production unit, it works like a dream" and then they found a bunch of issues with it. Canon just gave them the caveats with the pre-production units, which is totally normal.

It's "distubring" because the unit is basically ready to ship (within a month?) and they're still having auto-focus issues.

They must be fairly confident that they'll have it fixed before they ship . . but still, it's unsettling.

Sweeet. I'd say that the ISO6400 on the 1D-III is almost as good as ISO3200 on the 1D-IIN, based on the goalie shots.

ISO3200 is definitely better on the 1D-III.

So, I'd have to say that the 1D-III is about 2/3 stops better (on a pixel by pixel basis) than the 1D-IIN, and is about 1 stop better if you printed at the same size.

So the prototype's AF is out of whack. I hope they figured it out or there will be lots of disappointed users....

Otherwise the camera looks great.
