I think the vibrating sensor thing probably works fairly well.
Live Preview will be a great thing for pro's who do things like mount a camera from the rafters over the basketball goal, for example.
Everybody bitched about the battery on the 1D2, now we have a new system, the complaint is the chargers are different? The new charger is much improved, indicates level of charge currently on the battery, plus we get all that smart battery info in camera, plus less weight, plus the new battery system is smaller - it seems clear to me that Canon used the space gained to move things around in more or less the same body, including retaining the 2nd back LCD instead of incorporating shooting settings in the main view LCD, I am very glad for this.
I am really impressed Canon address in the white paper that they made sure the portrait shutter release has the same movement as the main shutter release - they really "got" what people were asking most for, even things that must have seemed trivial to them.

That΄s Canon΄s retail price !!! look in the Canon Australia web pages, they state that dealers has not to follow that price, so expect something less !
"*** All pricing indications are recommendations and are intended for guidance only. Dealers are not obliged to comply with recommended pricing."
In Australia at least, Canon or anyone else is not allowed to tell you the price you MUST sell if for, they can only recommend a price. In fact, dealers are permitted to sell it even higher than RRP if they wish. All authorsied Australian dealers, so far, are selling it at $6499.
That will change when some of the blood suckers, who have already sold their grandmothers, start under cutting the price to make a quick buck. Unknowledgable in the product, oh.... sorry... got on a bit of a rant there.... :worried:
B&H added a page for the camera on their website, but no pre-order or pricing information as of yet. Surely they'll update this throughout the coming days and give us some options.
Laurie,
I use the WFT-E1a on my 5D, so the batteries are the same. There is a lot to be said for the BP-511 series battery 'system', as you can find both batteries and chargers readily in non-photo stores (good if you forget something on vacation), and the chargers are much less bulky. And there are lots of good third party batteries available. The 'information' that Canon is providing in the viewfinder about the battery charge is not a new idea. Sony has had 'InfoLithium' batteries in digital cameras for years. It is just a matter of having the circuitry to read the charge state of the battery (ie, the current voltage plotted on a voltage to charge curve). I guess I'm disappointed that Canon didn't consider using the BP-511 series batteries in the new 1-series body. The capacity of 2 BP-511a batteries shouldn't be too much different from this new lithium pack.....?

shouldnt going from 12bit to 14bit (4000 to 16000 tonal transitions) significantly improve DR? Not sure how this would result in DR 'similar' to the 1D2 (assuming the OP has his facts straight)

Most of the time, the cycles to failure is expressed in terms of mean time to failure or mean cycles to failure. It's not that each shutter goes 299,999 exposures and then croaks in every copy....It means that a great many cameras may outlive their owners. I don't know, but strongly suspect this is a mean cyles to failure claim. As to any camera that gives you a solid 500k exposures....It doesn't owe you a nickel!
As to the 1D3 itself....the 5D meets my needs. ... exactly!
(slow, plodding, ff, and manual leica glass)...The 1D3 camera is a yawner in my little universe.

Now there's a huge assumption! I'm surprised at how little speculation there is about the potential demise of the Ds line. Based upon this announcement, I'm tending toward the possibility that the 1Ds Mk II was the last of its breed, and what comes next will be completely new. It just doesn't make sense that the 1D MkII N got a makeover and the 1Ds Mk II didn't. I'm guessing there's more to come, and it won't be in the form of a Ds...
Why would Canon kill off the 1Ds? The 1DMkIII provides a very robust base to put a 22mp or higher sensor as well room to improve the sensor itself including upping the bit rate to 16. The idea of Canon going to MF has always seemed pretty squirrelly to me as it's a very expensive undertaking for a small market that will shirnk rather than grow in size as the quality of 35mm based digital improves.

No. Moving from 12 to 14 bit only increases the number of steps between total black and total white. The amount of light at which the sensor does not capture any light (black) or clips (white) does not change with the number of bits that is used to sample the sensor.
From a photo I obviously copied from Rob Galbraith's site, which they credit to Canon so I didn't feel it's a problem to use, I was wondering if anybody knows what this item indicated w/ pointer is? I don't remember the 1D2 having anything like that included, haven't a clue what it is....
Even tho the battery has changed, the base looks the same. Any indication whether or not our brackets will still fit?
Also, I'm assuming that since the eyepiece has changed (specifically says the existing anti fog eyepiece won't fit) that the Angle finder C won't fit either?
13 pages and I don't think I've seen a complaints that they changed the 2-button UI of the 1-series?
I like the new battery system, even with the drawbacks of LI. I'd rather have 2 or 3 of the main batteries with me and know everything works with one battery change then 2 or 3 different kinds of batteries in differing levels of charge.
The wft-e2 is quite the little toy- it even has a web server in it. You can log into your camera over the wireless and view all the pictures on the card. Two thumbs up on the GPS recording functionality! But I do have 2 quibbles with the design...
1) From what I can see, we lost the external antenna connector that was present on the wft-e1- that could seriously drop your max range. I sense some quality time spent prying open the case of this little devil looking for an antenna mod.
2) I wish they would of placed the USB connection on the bottom. From a field usage standpoint (using it as a GPS recorder) the USB connector is rather large sticking out the left side of the wft, and just begging to get wacked.
The Mk3 is a worthy upgrade for me, bring on the additional dyanimc range, better AF and a few more pixels
Its to secure a cable to the side of the camera, think of it as "stress relief"
It is called the "USB Cable Protector" on the canon flash site. It screws into the new "extention terminal"- thats where the wft-e2 connects if have it.
Okay, Jeff - sorry. Just so I'm clear, the direct link was to my gallery here on FM - but it's not my picture, is that the issue? Or is it that no pictures should be in a discussion thread? Just want to be sure I don't do it again
Anyway, I think I figured out that that item is a "USB Cable Protector" which I assume is a device that assures the USB direct link cable, when used, can't pull loose while remote shooting.....
[Mod edit: No, it's simply that we shouldn't be embedding images from a copyrighted source, whether or not they have a copyright notice. As long as it's externally linked I don't really care, though it would be optimal if the link ran to DPR's site, not ours.]

Yes, I totally agree that these are great features, and that was my point. I'm glad Canon introduced these features in their top-of-the-line camera.
When the 400D was introduced with a "vibrator", people snitched at it saying that "it's just another thing to break", well back-in-the-days I remember people saying that about autofocus!
Some people here were saying that livepreview was a gimmick and that the only way to take a photo was with the camera up to the face and the eye through the viewfinder....anyway..

I must admit to being sceptical about the anti dust vibrate in the 400D, along the lines of anything not absolutely necessary between the sensor and the lens is a bad thing. I am still sceptical and sensor cleaning doesn't bother me, it looks like you can turn it off if you want anyway and as long as it doesn't have any direct impact to image detail then it is fine by me.
