Two models means more sales. A combined model means less sales, business 101.
Not necessarily. Furthermore, sales are the not the primary objective. Profits are. Cost is the other side of the profit equation that they are concerned about, and the cost of producing 2 models is higher than it would be for one model. How many more sales might it mean, and how much more will it cost, and is it worth it, is the calculus involved. I guess that is Business 102. ;-)
This speculation is actually IMO maddening. Especially the speculation on price. We have like until April until the camera even SHIPS.
Not exactly what I expected from a thread about a ground-breaking camera to have debates about non-existent prices and non-existent consise release dates..
I might get flamed for this but IMO, this thread should be about speculating on the features of the new camera instead of debating the asking price.
Don't know what DigicIII is compared to DigicII but FF is what I was after. Next I want 16-18MP on the 5D, weather sealing, longer life battery, lower ISO noise & a 3" lcd. And I want all of this without the weight of the IDs2. Don't care at all about 1.3x or 1.6x crop.

OK:
Just reading some of the TSE lens reviews, and it occurred to me that this might be another use where the live-view LCD could be useful. A number of posters reported some difficulty judging lens-adjustment effects through the viewfinder.

Good point, not exactly groundbreaking since Olympus got there first with their E-330 or something like that. This will be a first for a Canon digital SLR .. From the instructions it seems like a huge battery waster with the shutter opening and closing and you have to hit the set button, etc.
Good feature but it seems like a bunch of work.. Not simple like a P&S..

What? Price point and affordability (whatever that means to people) isn't a "feature" of the camera?
Sure it will be, but this reminds me of the speculation when the new Z/06 Corvette came out. Because of the hype, dealers added an additional 20-25 k on to the car (20% markup) because of the speculation on price, etc for a car that nobody even had in stock. Now the reality has set in and dealers are HAPPY to sell at sticker - $1000 now.
So, using similar math.. Canon releases the Mark 3 for $3999. Dealers tack on another 15-20% just because they HAVE the bloddy thing (something like a $500 premium) then sells the camera for $4599 like it's Christmas candy and the few people that wind up with one feel like they got the best deal then the $500 price drop premeates the market and you early adopters feel like you got ripped off..
Damn, here I go speculating about the release price...

One of my favourite features of the 1D MK2 is the ability to switch between the registered AF point, and auto AF points with the thumb AF buttons.
However, I notice with the 1D MK3 that this back button is now called "AF-ON".
Has anybody been able to glean from the white paper if the 1D MK3 will still be able to do this?
Perhaps it's just sour grapes, but I'm a little tired of paying over the odds for my camera equipment... why, why, why must Canon (and others) artificially inflate the price for the UK market?
I would love a 1DMkIII - and at $4000, it would perhaps be within my reach. $4000 is just about £2050.
The Jessops UK asking price?
£3049
O.O
That's... 50% more than its supposed release price in the US.... crazy! It doesn't cost Canon that much to ship them here, as opposed to America... Perhaps 10, or even 20% more than the direct exchange rate, I might be able to understand.... but 50 is just plain greedy.

According to cunstom function C. Fn IV-1 Shutter button/AF-ON button
0: Metering + AF start
1: Metering + AF start/AF stop
2: Metering start/Meter + AF start
3: AE lock/Metering + AF start
4: Metering + AF start/Disable
But I haven't found anything on the use of middle button (AE lock button) for AF in Custom Functions (old C. Fn4). I hope they haven't got rid of it as using 2 back buttons for AF has been so useful on my 1D mkII. I haven't had time to read the whole thread, so can someone confirm this please if it's not mentioned yet?

The way I understand it is that the "AF on" button replaces the old "star" button for focusing. I.e. something like choosing #3 above would be equivalent. Bottom line: same function, new button.

I know what you are saying but what I meant was whether it was possible to assign AF on the 'star' button as well, making 2 button focusing possible like 1D mkII? I just couldn't find any reference for it.

I think a trip to the States in the summer is in order. There's just no point in buying here in Ireland.
I am just off the phone with a Dublin Dealer. They think the price wil be 4700 euro, but are not sure. They want a 25% deposit if you want onto the waiting list! 100 euro, sure, I can understand that. 25% up front?
I never put on a deposit for my purchases. My dealer knows that I'm serious about ordering stuff, and acts accordingly.
It is surprising that they would want such a large deposit, especially since they would have no problems selling "your" camera to the next person in line, should you change your mind.

The multicontroller toggles between center point AF and auto AF. From what I can see in the white paper, that functionality can not be changed to make the center point into a home point programmed by the user.
However, on pg. 48 of the white paper, it states that the new custom function 10 in the autofocus/drive section is "Switch to Registered AF Point," and is the same as old custom function 18.
Thanks for the responses. I really hoped they wouldn't mess with the ability to switch from registered AF point to auto by using the two side-by-side buttons. That is my favourite function on the 1 series!
