p.2 #1 · batteries for external flash?

Unfortunately guys, obviously I have no idea wtf I am talking about, so it will be a high risk if you make yourself an external battery pack. You are now warned!

1) The "not too good looking" battery pack. The pack is made of two 6 AA battery holders, there are three wires from each holder, red, black, and white, you can ignore the white one. Load each holder with 5 AA batteries (5 only please! 6 will be very likely to KFC your flash!), the reason for 5 NiMH AA is because each NiMH battery is 1.2V, so you get 1.2V x 5 = 6V for the flash; this is one of the reason why NiMH seems to go down so fast, since the flash is primarily designed for 6V, if you have 4 1.2V NiMH, you get 4.8V only for the flash. Then, you solder red wire to another red wire, and same for the black wire, this means you are connecting the holders in parallel, which means, if holder A capacity is 2500mAh 6V, you do a parallel with another holder B 2500mAh 6V, you will get 5000mAh 6V in total.

2) Dummy battery. Since it's a 6 cell holder, there is one empty slot. You can either solder a wire to both ends so you short the empty slot, or use hot glue to create a dummy cell. I wrapped a post-it note paper around a regular AA battery, and fill it with hot glue (with a wire in the center, which connects the screw on both ends together). The screws are the ones from the regular computer case. You can do the same with an empty marker (if you find the right size), cut both ends and fill with hot glue, or use wooden dowel...Geez, my dummy batteries are so ugly looking! You'd better off buying someone else product for over $150!

3) RCA female jack.

4) The Quantum cord. The Quantum cord made for 580EX is $52.95 on B&H. You are highly recommended to buy a spanking new Quantum cord for your flash, since buying new feels better than using cheapo DIY stuff. Using high glue to make dummy battery makes you look bad while shooting wedding, as if you can't afford a product which is made by a highly reputable manufacture; please by all means avoid the use of hot glue dummy battery, or you may experience a 10% decrease in your service charge! By the way, you don't even have to buy an old Quantum cord, you can use an old spiral phone cord.

5) A flash in action with the highly unprofessional battery pack!

In conclusion, you can use the similar approach to create an even higher capacity pack. And by altering the battery configuration, you can create pack for your digital camera and 120V studio strobes too! Please also be creative, if you find any substitute for any of the components shown in the pictures, go ahead!

How so? The two hot glue dummy batteries are glued together, you can keep them separated if you want.

I love my energizer 2500mha batteries. I have two sets. They are cheap and easy to get, and last quite long. Walmart is your friend in this case.
Best

I completely agree with everyone who back Al's battery packs. I've talked to Al times before purchasing the Black Box and the Tuxedo. There are many pros and cons to the DIY thing if you don't have a complete understanding of how batteries work and how to properly wire them.

400D, I don't know anything about what you have posted here, but I truely hope you have a great understanding how this unit you plan to have close to your body!

People don't realize the simplist things such as placing batteries together in your pocket can cause them to explode. Or you can place them on a metal table/shelf and the contacts can cause a nice electrical shock. In other words, don't think you know it all just because you read it on the net somewhere. I tell the same to potential clients when it comes to photography......don't you

Peace,
Cordell

For what its worth, here's another vote for the Black Box solution. I have one, and its a great solution. Al is also very concerned with customer service, and provids it at the highest levels. I recently sent him an inquiry via email with nothing but an email address to respond to. He took the time to track down my phone number and called to personally answer the question. We spent a good deal of time on the phone, and I consider this above and beyond. This is the type of company I like to do business with.

I'm also a bit of a tinkerer (huh?) and gadget freak with an electronics background. But at some point, you must also consider the value of your time.

Al's Black Box is amazing. It does what is advertised and better than expected. Al is no cheapskate and tries to lure people in to buying a bad product. HE DOESN"T MAKE A BAD PRODUCT.

Resale Value of your DIY battery: $5 at a swap meet
Resale Value of Al's Black Box: $150
Knowing that your unit won't fail when you need it most: PRICELESS.

Again, taking a thread too seriously can get you a heart attack.

FWIW, I hope what I posted would benefit those who are interested in saving a buck or two and don't mind doing a little DIY, even though I pretty much know nothing about everything.

Why the attack 400D with your silly PM? I'm just pointing out the obvious that buying from a reputable dealer is much better than building yourself (from a business standpoint).

You seemed to criticize products that other FMers enjoy and people you don't even know. So then you try and mock me in private with my simple post? I don't get you.

Oh no, I am sorry if I confused you. I didn't mean to attack you in private.
I use PM because it's off topic already. I believe some of the members are interested in what I wrote to you in the PM, you are welcome to post that particular PM under a new thread in "Forum and Misc".

For now, let's focus on the battery pack.
