Dunno if the flash sync is easy, but I am most definitely with you and Erik on the rest.

I would suggest that sport shooters, event shooters, wildlife shooters and any shooters that don't really want/need higher MP's, might not be so thrilled with the idea of no more X vs H.
Consider the cost savings right now, of buying the d2hs vs d2xs. Not only would your uber d3 cost significantly more than the current d2x, you would remove a very significant camera from nikon's line. The d3h, if it is a DX sensor, is my next planned acquisition for a body.
If that doesn't happen, this is one current nikon user that will begin moving to canon shortly thereafter, starting with the purchase of a 1dmkIIn and appropriate lenses. ...Show more →
I'm with you there Kerry. I want a pro body and will buy one at the D2H price, but not the D2X price. I'm hoping the D3H turns out as a DX sensor with 8MP.
At this juncture with the current pixel densities and ability to resolve detail I see no real benefit in pursuing more megapixels with the current chip sizes. If you go full frame then you start to challenge your lenses ( canon knows this well ) . You need to design lenses that resolve better for the same image circle and frankly if I am going to spend more that what Nikon is charging these days I'm going to go medium format.
The real future is similar to what a previous poster said. Adding features to the camera. I LOVE the idea of a multi format camera. Changing from 6x6'ish to portrait to landscape to a 4/3'rds proportion ( I have always loved that proportion for my shots ) at the flick of a switch is brilliant. In addition the idea of blending different pixel sizes and sensitivities a la fuji would help increase dynamic range. instead of two different pixels how about 3 types? Lets shift from 8 bit color depth to true 16 bit output so that low light exposed for reality actually render tones more subtlety. Lets revisit the AA filters and software AA. There are tones of places Nikon and other manufacturers need to go before delivering us something that is just a marketing gimmick.
Just my .02
I would love to have a built in Wireless Transmitter, without that goofy external plastic antenna and the wire running to the USB port. It is built in on the point and shoot cameras but not the professional bodies.
None of these things are un-resonable or ridiculous. I really would like to see more attention paid to the other things that make great pictures rather than just more MP. Color depth, big strides in dynamic range, on the fly aspect ratio adjustments while retaining pixels count. As for wireless, come up with a compact flash port that works with compact flash wireless adapters and how about a modular gps while you are at it.

Here's what I want to see: A significant price drop in sensor technology will lead to the ability to cost-effectively produce a square CCD that reaches all the way to the corners of the full frame lenses. This size will push 20+MP. Instead of worrying about vertical grips and flipping the camera for a portrait shot, you just push a "portrait" button or turn a jog dial and the camera automatically energizes the proper regions of the sensor for the chosen orientation while blacking out parts of the viewfinder, ala D2X. BTW this would effectively terminate the need for bulky flash brackets! With this system, you could select a Hasselblad style square frame for maximum resolution, a 4x5 style frame for the wedding and portrait guys, classic 2:3 ratio for whoever wants it, even panoramic. As mentioned earlier, by using a full frame you get the best the DX and FF worlds, as the camera could automatically detect a DX lens, thus downsizing the resolution and cropping in for a 1.5x focal magnifier. Although I don't own one, I believe the D2X is already utilizing some of this technology in its high-speed crop mode, am I right?
The possibilities are endless: down res for faster shooting (no more X vs. H), throw in the Fuji style dynamic range boosting pixels, super-tele 3x mode, etc.
Also, those of you who are happy with your 12-24mm f/4 lenses should consider the benefit of the extra stop and superior CA characteristics of the 17-35mm f/2.8.
basically the problam with having a large frame like that is that the shutter mechanism would have to be massive, which means that the camera will be a leviathan, and it would be louder than uncle Bert's farts, both of which aren't welcome during the vows. it also limits the FPS of the camera, and introduces significant vibrations to the camera, which would make the high megapixels redundant, because the image will have a slight blur to it anyway. there are other problems with lenses as well, they gradually get less sharp away from the centre of the lens, and a square format will show up more vignetting than ever before.
If there was a square sensor (which I would doubt but love to have, please give me the ability to portrait shoot (vertical crop, black out the edges like the D2Xs does). Hmmm , sweet. I've mentioned it before so I know its getting tired
Anyway...
10MP JFET LBCAST II sensor
14 bit RAW
8.5 frames per second
Cam 2200
22 AF points over a wider area
3" LCD (maybe even OLED)
1080i output
Dual slector control (dial and nav buttons) as found on the Coolpix 'S' models
Dual memory card slots
Firewire 2 and direct hard drive connection
I don't know about WiFi, maybe maybe.

Dude....... You forgot a couple of things. Like, dual monitor support, with foldout widescreen monitor and keyboard, with CS3 installed, but most important, the CAM2200-ABDLOM.
CAM2200 is simply NFG without ABDLOM... That's what I heard canon was coming out with anyway....
Now that 10 megapixels seem to be more than adequate to obtain excellent resolution and details seems to me better firmwares are in order. Nikon has been very conservative when it has come to "noise" and their firmwares have been geared to a compromise that renders the best possible image. Just keep in mine that "noise" with Nikon cameras resemble grain with film.
I cannot speculate about what I do not know. A "full frame" till now has not been Nikon's priority and indeed, after they introduced the 10.5 and 12-24 mm lenses those who enjoy and make a living with landscape photography have been very happy. Sport and wildlife photographers have been enjoying the advantages of the smaller DX format reflected in an automatic increase of the focal length of their lenses.
Digital is still very young and in stages of development. I am quite sure we are going to be seeing better cameras and lenses in the future and who knows, maybe also the so called full frame camera. Lots of money is being used in research and development and something tells me a good part goes toward better sensors. We all know what 4 megapixels (D2H, D2Hs) are capable of.
So, as technology continues to improve the digital future will be better. I am quite sure that those new cameras, like the D3H or D3X or D300 will continue to amaze us.

I really like that idea of configurable crop-size, even on a DX-sized sensor. They already seem to have the technology available in the D2Xs with the HSC mode. Granted, it would work better if you had a square-sized sensor, but even on DX, it may be useful.
For example, if you want a 4:3 aspect ratio, you simply select it, and the camera should be able do a HSC-like 4:3 crop in the VF, and to save the image as a 4:3 to the CF card. This would allow at least a reasonable FPS.
On the subject of blinging out that D3, why not have some fluffy dice hanging off the lens mount instead? They should supply a fluffy-dice holder I think. Wonder if you could replace the decals with some gold-plated ones. And that grip, how about some memory foam that would contour to your hand perfectly? I'm up for that. And the colour has to be metallic blue, not just your run-of-the-mill plain blue, coz that's just boring. Last but not least, need some flames painted on the lens hood, for effect. Am I forgetting anything?
Well, you know that nikon would charge extra for the dice holder........
I can't decide on the red or metallic blue. But, I suspect that the red, with the extra 2fps would be useful for the Automagic Bikini Detection and Lock-On Mode, so long as it also had the 362436 sensor.

After all this talk, I think we're finally getting somewhere

I'd pay for that dice holder... anything for those fluffy dice... mmm fluffy dice.... it's a must have for me!
Nah man, you can live w/o that extra 2fps... coz you know red can't compare to metallic blue. So sleek, so sexy, you'll get all the attention you know you want. At the beach, at the rink, at the club, or just hanging out with your friends, metallic blue is the one that will get you all that attention. The ABD feature would be made a lot easier if you had that metallic blue... you know it's true! But you know, maybe they will add that ABD feature as a firmware upgrade if it's not available immediately...
Leica showed the current state of CCD development. Very nice tonality, that bayer CMOS may not be able to match. Forget the IR issues and light angle problems, these won't be an issue for DSLR.
It would seem at this point Nikon can build a 35mm size sensor camera that can produce a nicer file than the 1DsII. But this wouldn't necessarily be a high speed crop camera. It depends what they perceive the market wants, how it fits with the rest of the line, and how it addresses competitive issues.
It seems unlikely that a new large sensor camera would be a terrific value like the D200.

It better have hover mode with VE (vibration elimination) that works even during a 7.5 earthquake or I'm not buying it!!!
