p.2 #1 · Blockbuster girl [MORE PICS p.6]

zcaley wrote:
Pretty girl. I like the first one, for the timeless quality. She looks like she could be from any era and the crop works. The last one is wonderful. Why turn away from those beautiful green eyes, but I wish I could see Both of them. I love the line of her hands in the last one also.

I happened to chimp when I saw that first shot and as soon as I saw it, I too thought of a '50s starlet pose. While I too initially wished that I had been able to get both eyes in that last shot, I actually think [for me] it works better b/c 1) it makes you long to see the other without attaining it and 2) I was trying to go for a triangular center of interest b/c her eye, lips, and bracelet. Including the other eye would have "cluttered" it perhaps. Thanks for commenting.

The tighter crops of 2, 3, and 4 make her seem like she is all head and a wide one at that.

You are correct in your observation that she does have a relatively wide head compared to its length. As I stated in the last post, I had to get close to get rid of the background. You are right though, ideally, esp. on 2, I would have zoomed back to include her entire left hand.

Would love to see a fuller photo of her, body included. The lighting looks great. And all in all I am glad she inspired you to pick up your camera again.

Next time, I definitely will get more full/half-body shots. I was actually quite concerned about how the lighting was going to turn out - I guess sticking to the very basics was a good idea! Yeah, she was definitely an inspiration - I saw her at Blockbuster several times before I asked about posing. Thanks for commenting.

I see what you are saying. I'll be more mindful of that in the future. Thanks for commenting.

I think number 3 is my favorite. The hands and arms fight with her beautiful face and big round eyes inside the tight crop.

Thanks, Tom, for commenting. I'd say that one runs a close 2nd for me also.

Charlemagne wrote:
Great to see you posting again.. sorry about your troubles with others, but the model is great and I kind of like the tight comps on these, especially the last, her eyes are just wonderful!

Charles - long time no see (read)! Thanks for your comments. Her eyes are even more incredible in real life - the first thing that yelled out to me when I saw her. As for the troubles, at least they're over!

What's the deadline on returning her to Blockbuster?

She actually has stopped working at Blockbuster, which is kinda too bad since I haven't gone there since!

nice series. for me, her pupils are too open, giving her a bit of a zombie look in the eyes. not enough ambient light?

Even though your bw conversions are great, I'm gravitating towards the shot in color. She has some amazing eyes and I like everything about it. Great job! Thanks for sharing. I hope this motivates you to pull out your gear a little more often. Take care.

Excellent work I really like them. There is something on the last one I´m not sure. Her lips and her eye looks too strong for me. Off course it´s just a personal opinion, otherwise I like the pic very much. You did an excellent work as I said but not only because of the pics also because of the girl and the work you did with her. From the blockbuster to the final result.

2, 3 and 6 are my favorites. On #4, it might be the angle of the light and some weird refraction with the direction she's looking, but her corneas look to be a little hazy... in focus, but hazy. I would love to see a color version of this on as it might get rid of the haze. Actually, I would love to see the color versions of all of them. Judging from no. 6, she has tremendous eyes and while the B&W versions aren't without merrit (they're fantastic), in my humble opinion, they don't do her the justice her eyes deserve.

They are all very well done.

Mike.

I really like this series. For me, #3 is the stand-out, mostly because of her eyes and her expression. In all of them, you were able to bring out a subtle yet strong emotion that begs me to revisit the photos over and over again to see if I can discover what is laying underneath. Nice job, and great recognition of her potential.

Ugh... sorry to hear about the nonsense you had to deal with in terms of stolen and broken gear.

Nice work at any rate; I'm glad your muse has returned (hopefully, you can help me find mine). The model vaguely reminds me of Tori Amos.

Hope all is well!

Really nice shots, although I always prefer a big cheesy smile. Sucks about the lighting. I would have persued something, or sent a bag of crap to his door. MS huh? I don't think it'd be wrong to name the person, just so others won't be duped. stinks. anyway, congrats on the PHD and the great shot.

Can we vote on whether we "out" MS or not

In this same thread, I have a question about approaching people like the girl in Blockbuster.

I see many ladies/girls that I would like to photograph. What would you say is the best approach to ask someone if you could photograph them, especially a "non-model"? I've thought about printing cards up with a photo of one of my models on one side, then just a few words like "Would like to photograph you if interested" on the other side or something to that affect. I just don't want to look like a pervert when asking a person to model for me. Does that make sense in terms of what I am trying to ask?

How do other photographers approach "non-models" to see if they would like to model?

Thanks for your comments, Jim. Alas, my not shooting doesn't affect my income Any suggestions for concentrating more on the eyes in the future?

get her back in and show me those eyes. Also back off a little so we can se more of her.

Aye aye - will do!

dday500 wrote:
I would like to see a few more in color, she has such pretty eyes its a shame to miss them in the first pics. IMHO

I'll try to post the color ones later today - Most of the processing was geared ultimately to B&W - I generally don't "see" well/do color.

mental note: need to rent movies more ! but seriously, great series...never know where youll find talent.

I always walk around with cards now.

Tighter crop on #6 might make even more impact. Did you try it?

Thanks for the suggestion Marko. I did try messing with it, but I found that I would end up cropping the hands/arms at even weirder croppings. feel free to mess around with it if you like.

Thanks susan for your comments - much appreciated!

As for the breakage/theft of your gear, it's such a shame that something like that would happen to such a kind generous person like you.

awww, you're too kind! I'm just happy the "funk" didn't last longer...

Thanks for pointing that out! I knew the eyes looked a tad odd, but couldn't place it. I normally like having all the lights off with only the modeling lights, but they weren't on track so the key should not have made them so dilated. Next time, I will have more ambient light to alleviate that.

You are way too kind! I can see the point you are making about the eyes and lips, but especially since the other eye is hidden, I thought to bring out the most poignant elements - eyes, lips, and the bracelet - a trinity of sorts. Thanks again!

Gotta be a good one.

Thank you for the kind words, especially knowing the high quality of your shooting. The eldor story is that he approached this "totally hot" woman in a grocery store, who several months later ended up posing for him, and she herself suggested doing some rather risque nude shots. I'm not much into doing nudes (the fine art touch that people like fb101 have is beyond me), but still I think he's got one of the best stories I've heard. And she wanted the nudes done!

Thanks, Bob, for your comments! Yep, at the Maywood Mart BBuster. Sorry I've been swamped lately with being in STL often this past fall finishing things up. I'll send you a PM later today.

As far as the eyes go, the haziness is due to my [lack of] PS'ing skills. Her contact lenses and blood vasculature were quite prominent so I had to touch those - they were quite distracting, especially given the light coloring of her irises. I will post color ones later today. And you are quite right - her eyes are quite "intoxicating" if I might add... Thanks for commenting!

Thanks for stopping by! yeah, it is too bad, but it's all behind now. One of her friends can do makeup/make clothes, so we're definitely going to experiment [with shooting].

I hope your semester ended well and that you are having fun with your SO. By the way, "duniya" misses you.... I owe you an email as well...

Hi Asim,

Thanks for the Eldor story. He is such a nice guy. He has helped me quite a bit with my Photoshop skills. Funny story. I'm sure he got great photos of her, he is quite the photographer.

I think your shots are just great. So glad you finally picked up a camera again. Sorry to hear about your loss as well. Karma will get MS one of these days, whoever he is. Trust me. I've seen Karma get people and that is a good thing.
