Very nice images, Eric, Arne and Robert.

Here's my 35-70/2.8 macro shot from today.

Peter-

Did you miss my question about turn-around time at Solms?

Ted,

Sorry. I missed that.

Yes, once it got to Germany, the repair took about 10 business days. That must be the usual timeframe, because I'm not a pro photographer, so I don't think I got their special treatment.

Frankly nothing special, apart form the fact that they are all 100% crops...

To pursue the 180 mm theme, here's another recent image taken with the Apo Elmarit at the minimum focusing distance and cropped a little.

Arne,
Thanks for sharing the images. I really like the abstract ice ones posted here and on the alternative image thread. The 180 elmarit seems to perform rather well! How much better is it than the 80-200 f/4 zoom?

Thank you Eric. As for the 80-200/4 zoom I'm afraid can't help you, have never used the lens. From what I've read of users reports it seems to be an excellent zoom.

Here's the last DMR 180 Apo-Elmarit image for now.

Wow! These are beautiful!

I have the 80-200 and its a fine lens but these have something extra in terms of depth I think. A friend of mine here has the APO elmarit....maybe I can convince him to do a test. I'd better not do that before I finish my taxes! :-)

Beautiful images Arne!

As for the 80-200/4, I just finished to test it and I found it an excellent zoom indeed.
I compared it to my 180 Apo-Summicron, which I previously tested against the 180 Apo-Elmarit and 180 Apo-Telyt.
The Apo-Summicron and Apo-Elmarit are the sharpest, with the Apo-Telyt and Vario-Elmar a bit behind at wider apertures.

The Apo-Telyt has a very nice tonal rendition, with slightly more 3D look than the Apo-Elmarit, even if with sometimes odd bokeh.

The Apo-Summicron has the smoothest out-of-focus at any aperture and I love the images it produces, but I can't recommend it to everyone as it is much more exensive and much more heavier, though I can handhold it more steadily at lower shutter speeds than the other 180s, let alone the Vario-Elmar which I find difficult to handhold at anything < 1/500 sec (but it's just me).

The Vario-Elmar is a bargain, being a zoom with 90% of the Apo-Telyt quality (less its great 3D look).

The Apo-Elmarit has the best performance/size ratio with razor sharp images at any aperture in a relatively small package. It's only a bit too "clinical" to my taste.

Frankly there's no good lens from Leica in this range... they are all excellent!

Has any one encountered this problem?

The lower one-third of some of my shots is very under-exposed. The line between proper exposure and under-exposure is quite distinct, i.e., the shot does not gradually shift into under-exposure. When I fire the camera I can hear two distinct operations separated by a short time interval. it's possible that I am getting two shots, one properly exposed and one under-exposed, both on the same frame.

The problem is intermittent, and may be associated with a low battery, since it occurs after I have been shooting for a while. But the battery indicator shows "full" when this happens, and yesterday I gave the camera a rest for about two hours (without recharging) and the problem did not re-appear.

The problem is not associated with any particular lens - I have tried switching lenses and it has no effect. It seems to come and go randomly.

Any ideas?

Ted,

This is a new one. I haven't heard of this problem with a DMR. If you weren't using a DMR and using the lenses with an adapter on a Canon body, I would say that this sounds like the mirror not clearing the lens rear element. I don't think it's a double exposure problem -- Can that happen on a digital?

Peter-

I'm a little suspicious of the mirror myself. I tried locking the mirror up, and got alternating good exposures and blanks (completely black). I wonder if the mirror is jamming somehow. What ever it is, it's intermittent and hard to reproduce.

I looked at the Leica notice on Galbraith's website. Barring some incredible forgery, it looks like the DMR is over. "Kaput" as they say in a certain language.

Talk about instant obsolescence - I'm still trying to learn how to use the thing.

Curious that no replacement is even hinted at. Why would they stop selling it if they have no substitute? What am I missing?

Sometimes it's difficult to distinguish between advanced marketing techniques and stupidity. The situation will get clarified in the next few weeks. I doubt it's coincidence that the memo comes just a couple of weeks before major announcements by the big companies.

Ted, ending the production of an item doesn't mean it is either broken or worthless. Have fun with it. The digital cycle is just shorter, and having an uncooperative partner does accelerate that. I would still love to have one, but that and an M8 is too much for my budget.

"Leica continues to develop the digital solution for the R system. Leica assures all DMR customers of its full customer service and are optimistic about the digital developments in the R System in the near future."

Sounds to me like a hint. R10 appearing at PMA? I agree with Anselfan--maybe sooner than expected!

Leica seems to have taken the approach of a limited production run for each of their digital products: when its done, its done....

They don't run the production out over a long number of years - simply introduce the product, sell it, and then make a new one. This is true with the C and D lines as well, and seems to represent their current take on the market.

I can't say its all bad, either, as it keeps them somewhat out of the obsolesence tag, but sometimes you'd wish they would not drastically change their product each time (digilux 2 to 3, for example).

I'd guess a full frame integrated R is to be expected. Just makes a lot of sense.

question for Aperture and DMR users: I saw a post for a hack to get Aperture to work with the Leica M8 dng files....just wondering if anyone has gotten it to work for the DMR? I tried doing the M8 hack only replacing the M8 with the appropriate "Leica Camera AG-R8 - Digital Back DMR" but that didn't work. Any other thoughts?
Sure would be great to be able to use Aperture with my leica files.
