I spoke with a rep at Canon USA today (2:00PM PST). According to this rep the Dell posting on the 70-200mm f2.8L IS was a mistake. The rep even called me back stating that she could not find the link on the Dell's site. I told her that it had been already been removed. She stated that it should have been removed last week. She then stated Canon will not be supplying Dell with any 70-200mm f2.8L IS lenses to sell at Dell mistakenly posted price.
Well, there has been at least one person receive the IS lens at the 1169 price. Perhaps your rep is not high enough in the food chain to know exactly what Canon and/or Dell are doing. I fullly expect Dell to deliver the lens that we ordered. Also, I believe that the offer was never on the web and was only available via phone.. YMMV
Not one person on THIS site that placed an order has received a lens. I hope you get what you ordered but according to the rep I spoke with, it's doubt full.

Canon has to at least TRY to make all of it's OFFICIAL Dealers abide by it's Pricing Policy. The Saleperson may have been stating Canon's Official Policy.
Dell may be able to do what it wants and again I say I doubt it WANTS to LOSE $272 thousand dollars.
It's a great Lens and if everyone has one, perhaps we could make a 70-200L Forum..
Guys I just got mine about an hour ago and it is the "IS" version. Gotta like deals like this. Hope ya'll get yours soon. Now I really need to sell my 135mm f2 over in the classified to avoid a divorce....lol.
Tommorow Dell's going to be selling 1 D's for $3600, the next day they will be telling you" Oh yes their 1 D something or other, were just not shure if their the "S" model."
If I did not build computers for myself, I might buy from Dell. I cant build cameras and len's so I buy from B&H, Canoga,Sammy's or Badger Graphics.
If you want a computer, buy from a Computer Dealer. If you want photo gear, buy from a Camera shop.
I ordered mine on the 19th. I have bought quite a bit of computer equipment over the years from Dell and although I have had some problems, all in all I would say they have been very good from a service strandpoint even when they did "drop the ball". Whether they did or did not drop the ball on this one, I guarantee it will make us frequent their website a tad more often in search of the next unbelievable deal which may be why they drop a bone here and there......and folks this was quite the deal. This may be the photo deal of the year!
I believe all the units delivered so far where ordered on the 19th.
BTW, I've also had very good experiences with Dell. They replaced my laptop with a brand new one after a year and a half because of a strange failure mode (it started smoking), and a few other desktops that have either been DOA or the hard drive/clone job was bad. Out of 140+ computers to my customers in the past year or so, there have been just three that have been returned to Dell, and a couple that had something fail since being installed (a CDR and a Raid controller).

If It happens to be a 1Ds, and you get it for $3600 from Dell, I see little value in patronizing a camera shop that charges twice as much. This certainly seems to be the case with this lens... people are ordering from Dell, and at least one person got the right item in the mail, at a >30% discount over competing camera shops. No reason to believe that others will not receive the same. Personally, I don't really think the generalization of buying cameras from camera stores holds when the pricing differences are this severe; $1169 versus $1650... I somehow doubt the fact that an eminently charming New Yorker who knows only slightly more about the product than Dell is selling the equipment to me is enough of a value addition to a given product to make up for the $500 savings.
if you know what you want and you are getting a verifiably new product from a company with an established reputation, who cares if they are not in the camera business? Savings talk...

Good Job Ed, so ALL NJ workers are liars?
What is your point?
I did not mean to imply "all", but having dealt with NY/NJ mail order houses over the last 30 years, for camera equipment, I would say that most of the sales people I have tried to purchase equipment from have not been open and completely honest. Now, that does not mean over half of the NY/NJ sales people as I use NY/NJ mail order to obtain the lowest possible price I can find, so you may very well say (and I myself have said it), "You're asking for it". YMMV
One other thing on what we get from mailorder/web places. B&H, whom I think everybody considers to be at the top of the line for mailorder/web, says the Canon Digital Rebel list price is $1500.00 (everything I have read says the list price is $999.00, both with the lens). So someobdy not looking anyplace else would think that B&H is selling the Digital Rebel for a $500.00 discount.
Your Rebel analogy is piss poor. What Dell is offering the 70-200 f2.8L IS is well below CURRENT street pricing. $1200 for that lens is not aggressive it's ridiculous. As I’ve said in earlier posts I hope everyone that ordered one get it, I just doubt that will happen. I also have to be honest if it doesn’t happen I can't wait to see jray’s head explode!!!
