I agree that this is not a huge issue although my family Christmas photos would always included some form of lights.
Please look at this:

you guys would panic if you saw a Leica Noctilux image. Non uniform light shapes are standard with very large aperture lenses, get over it.
Exactly. When light goes through a circular apeture at an angle it looks like an ellipse. The wider angle the lens and the wider the apeture the more dramatic the effect. Take a looks at these samples (not mine):
The background is signficantly smoother on the 50/1.2L shot. I have always disliked the backgrounds on the 50/1.4 and at least from this sample the 50/1.2L has the kind of backrounds I have grown to expect from my other L primes. If it is sharper than the 50/1.4 at f/1.4 (likely but I haven't seen proof of this yet) and it focuses faster (still and open question in my mind), what more can you ask for?
That said, I am not particularly anxious to get one of the first copies off the assembly line. Likely the 50/1.2L is on my christmas list for 2007.

Oh my, yes... 50L is much nicer there. Of course, the focus points appear to be slightly different, but I wouldn't think that would make much of a difference.
Again, my big gripe with the lens at this point is just the backfocusing I seem to be battling.
For all I know, B&H took in 1,000 copies today and sold out of all of them. I admit this is entirely possible.
But given that a) all of the big retailers I see online are still showing it as backordered b) all of the small retailers I see online are still showing it as backordered, I'm going to assume that not all that many are getting out there to dealers yet.
Of course, this is just an assumption. If you happen to know that B&H received hundreds, that would be interesting to hear.

Of course I don't know. But it's funny how the detractors are doing a lot of negative assuming regarding this lens. To me, I think it's interesting that B&H showed any stock at all. With so much interest in this lens, I would have assumed that they would have simply filled all the backorders immediately and go directly to an "Out of Stock" status.
I'm not a detractor at all...I've had a preorder in at onecall since the day they started taking orders and hope this lens really is as great as I hope it will be.
As for B&H having enough to fill pre-orders and still show an instock status, I agree that is surprising. One possible explanation is that people haven't placed have all that many preorders. People may be sitting back and waiting for more samples / reviews / price reductions.
This lens has generated a ton of buzz. Whether or not that has translated into actualy orders for a $1600 part is not entirely clear yet.

IIRC, B&H wasn't actually taking pre-orders, which probably has something to do with it.
Indeed, B&H is generally not taking any orders at all of such items they are temporarily out of stock, since they want to ship everything the same day you order. The exception to this rule are those items which they don't stock at all - there you have the status Accepting orders, but only there.

Looking at my pictures closely, my lens is back focussing as well.
Perry
Several pages of posts since Perry's samples, and little comment. Am I alone in thinking they look good? And , Perry, could you explain where the backfocussing can be detected - I don't see it...
I’m a little bit surprised by the number of people interested in 50L who never heard about the “Cat’s Eye Bokeh” or the fact that some of the highlights will be cut off by the mirror chamber.
Let’s just say, that if you didn’t see this in 50L, 85L or other ultra fast prime pictures there would be something wrong with the lens or the laws of physics.
