p.95 #1 · Mustang Air to Air

Hi Guys!

Nice work as usual. Sorry I've been so non-existent for the last five days, but GML had me at the field at 6 every morning and leaving it at around 9 every night. By the time I got everything archived and backed up, it was 2 to 3 am and wake up was 5. I haven't had a chance to look at any images yet (I hope my Canon's were working!), but I just hooked my backup travel hard drive to my G5 and began the transfer. Yikes! it says 7 hours, 23,345 images!! There should be a couple of keepers in there. I'll get back to y'all.

I am afraid I'm completely ruined, this was the event of a lifetime. So many highlights I can't begin to enumerate them. One was the two hours my good friend Paul Bowen and I spent in the "Pacific Prowler" B-25 shooting Mustangs and formations of Mustangs until there was no light left at all.

Gotta go, my 11 hours of sleep since last Wednesday is catching up with me and I've got a week of shooting slightly less stimulating subjects ahead of me. Images soon.

Quietly sobbing in the background...

I'm convinced I made the right choice by not going. Adding insult to injury, I ended up getting sick on Thursday morning, so I not only spent the whole weekend working but I did so while feeling miserable. But by God, I would've traded a kidney to be there!

Y'all better have made me proud of you. You now have a moral duty to show us some pics, so we can at least live vicariously through you.

p.95 #4 · Mustang Air to Air

Hello ALL,
Knowing how I appreciate things flyable, a buddy sent this my way in an email. It's too good not to share. Enjoy!

Subject: P-51 and its Pilot

This is a good little story about a vivid memory of a P-51 and its
pilot, by a fellow who was 12 years old in Canada in 1967. You may know
a few others who would appreciate it.

It was noon on a Sunday as I recall, the day a Mustang P-51 was to
take to the air. They said it had flown in during the night from some
U.S. airport, the pilot had been tired. I marveled at the size of the
plane dwarfing the Pipers and Canucks tied down by her. It was much
larger than in the movies. She glistened in the sun like a bulwark of
security from days gone by.

The pilot arrived by cab, paid the driver, and then stepped into the
flight lounge. He was an older man; his wavy hair was gray and tossed.
Looked like it might have been combed, say, around the turn of the century.

His flight jacket was checked, creased and worn - it smelled old and
genuine.
Old Glory was prominently sewn to its shoulders. He projected a quiet
air of proficiency and pride devoid of arrogance. He filed a quick
flight plan to Montreal (Expo-67, Air Show) then walked across the tarmac.

After taking several minutes to perform his walk-around check the
pilot returned to the flight lounge to ask if anyone would be
available to stand by with fire extinguishers while he "flashed the old
bird up. Just to be safe."

Though only 12 at the time I was allowed to stand by with an
extinguisher after brief instruction on its use -- "If you see a fire,
point, then pull this lever!" I later became a firefighter, but that's
another story.

The air around the exhaust manifolds shimmered like a mirror from fuel
fumes as the huge prop started to rotate. One manifold, then another,
and yet another barked -- I stepped back with the others. In moments
the Packard-built Merlin engine came to life with a thunderous roar,
blue flames knifed from her manifolds. I looked at the others' faces,
there was no concern. I lowered the bell of my extinguisher. One of the
guys signaled to walk back to the lounge.
We did.

Several minutes later we could hear the pilot doing his pre flight
run-up. He'd taxied to the end of runway 19, out of sight. All went
quiet for several seconds; we raced from the lounge to the second
story deck to see if we could catch a glimpse of the P-51 as she started
down the runway.We could not.

There we stood, eyes fixed to a spot half way down 19. Then a roar
ripped across the field, much louder than before, like a furious hell
spawn set loose---something mighty this way was coming. "Listen to
that thing!" said the controller. In seconds the Mustang burst into our
line of sight.

It's tail was already off and it was moving faster than anything I'd
ever seen by that point on 19. Two-thirds the way down 19 the Mustang
was airborne with her gear going up. The prop tips were supersonic; we
clasped our ears as the Mustang climbed hellish fast into the circuit
to be eaten up by the dog-day haze.

We stood for a few moments in stunned silence trying to digest what
we'd just seen. The radio controller rushed by me to the radio.
"Kingston tower calling Mustang?" He looked back to us as he waited
for an acknowledgment. The radio crackled, "Go ahead Kingston ."
"Roger Mustang. Kingston tower would like to advise the circuit is
clear for a low level pass." I stood in shock because the controller
had, more or less, just asked the pilot to return for an impromptu air
show!

The controller looked at us. "What?" He asked. "I can't let that guy
go without asking. I couldn't forgive myself!" The radio crackled once
again, " Kingston, do I have permission for a low level pass, east to
west, across the field?"
"Roger Mustang, the circuit is clear for an east to west pass."
"Roger, Kingston, I'm coming out of 3000 feet, stand by." We rushed
back onto the second-story deck, eyes fixed toward the eastern haze.
The sound was subtle at first, a high-pitched whine, a muffled
screech, a distant scream. Moments later the P-51 burst through the
haze. Her airframe straining against positive Gs and gravity, wing
tips spilling contrails of condensed air, prop-tips again supersonic
as the burnished bird blasted across the eastern margin of the field
shredding and tearing the air. At about 400 mph and 150 yards from
where we stood she passed with the old American pilot saluting.
Imagine. A salute! I felt like laughing, I felt like crying, she glistened,
she screamed, the building shook, my heart pounded.

Then the old pilot pulled her up and rolled, and rolled, and rolled
out of sight into the broken clouds and indelibly into my memory.

I've never wanted to be an American more than on that day. It was a
time when many nations in the world looked to America as their big
brother, a steady and even-handed beacon of security who navigated
difficult political water with grace and style; not unlike the pilot
who'd just flown into my memory. He was proud, not arrogant, humble,
not a braggart, old and honest, projecting an aura of America at its best.
That America will return one day, I know it will.

Until that time, I'll just send off this story; call it a reciprocal
salute, to the old American pilot who wove a memory for a young
Canadian that's lasted a lifetime.

Hi Folks,

I went through my pics of GML briefly. A few are OK. This was my first attempt at taking photos at an airshow. It’s quite a fun challenge, you know? I started with about 750 photos from the day. And ended up with about... zero that are suitable for framing. So they’re not up to the high standards of this thread. But hey, it’s a start.

And a few more pics from GML at this Flickr account that I just set up:

My bio clock is so screwed up I'm delirious, but can't fall asleep. Decide to look through a few images to see if my Canon's were on target. I had them all burning images with varying lenses, in 27 years I can't recall an assignment that required this intense of a shooting schedule. We'll see how they all performed.

Here's one from Saturday evening's flight....

Jon,

Are you sure that Thunderbirds shot isn't one of Jim's earlier on this thread? HEHEHE, looks great!

Jim,

Incredible shot of the Mustang trio! And knowing, that this isn't probably even near the best shot you've taken during that Mustang event, I'm just green of jelousy. Only if I could just once in my lifetime get a similar chance. Looking forward to see more...

Oh, just realized that this thread has just sort of returned back home - Mustang Air to Air!! I don't even dare to show any otherkind of shots anymore. Only problem is that I don't have any A2A-shots of Mustangs

Hi Mikko,

Thanks! The whole event is such a wonderful blur that I really have no idea what I shot. I'll be opening Photoshop "presents" for some time to come. A couple of my buddies had to do an intervention one evening and drag me off to get something to eat, I was headed back out to the flight line for just one more shot after 17 hours of being on my feet.

That is kind of neat that we've come full circle, isn't it? I'm glad everyone's enjoying it still. More to come. I hope no one minds the faint watermark on these images. I have a new agreement with a major stock agency and they require their photographers images to be watermarked.

LOVE IT!!!

I think this might be first A2A-shot that I've seen of Mustang with armament attached. Great reflections and all. And of course, full circle!!

And no, don't mind at all about the watermark. It would be insane to post this kind of shots without one

Jim-

Amazing shots! It was a very cool event. And the best compliment I can think of is that your photos do it plenty of justice.

Rodolfo,

Wow. Thanks so much for the very kind words. That means a lot coming from you- you’ve got some really nice shots here in this thread.

After wanting an SLR camera for 20 years since high school, I finally got one (Nikon D80) just this summer. Yesterday I threw up a few photos here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/drseamonkey/
But to be honest, I’m really still getting the hang of things. No “best work” so far. And I have yet to take a single photo that I think is so good that I’d print it out and hang it on the wall. Got a long way to go. Pics from you, Jim, and jbear provide for perfect goals and inspiration. But I’m having loads of fun.

Here's some more from GML Friday, hope it's not too many and am boring anyone.

1 & 2 Who's directing traffic around here anyway?

3 & 4 Lovely blue skies!

5 I kinda liked the shadow effect on the smoke trails from the partly cloudy skies.

6 I think this would have been better with them all above the cloud, but....

7 Up, up, and away!

8 A bit of a different shot. Too far away really, but I liked the back lighting.

9 It wasn't all about being in the air for this show.

Eric - nice shots! ... and I agree - Friday's skys were the best - a little clouds and a little blue and enough difference from one shot to the next to be a challenge. But the results were worth it! Saturday being all blue was beautiful too - but Sunday's haze just didn't do it for me.

Your shots are fantastic - as are everyone who has posted from this weekend. We were all very blessed to have had such a great weather weekend and such an outstanding field to shoot.

Dear Jon,

Nicely done! After all the hand wringing I was doing over the MKIII, I put it on the line at GML. I had all three bodies out with different lenses and I just grabbed each of them according to the focal length I needed. I have discovered that constantly fine tuning the focus in AF/AISERVO mode improves the hit ratio quite a bit. Sometimes even knocking it out of focus so it has to think about it and refocus, if that makes any sense at all. All three bodies performed well as near as I can tell.

Missed seeing you, I was such a moving target all four days. I did have the pleasure of meeting and shooting with Andy Bershaw from our group, super guy!

I've got an editorial assignment coming up to do the F-35 air to air. Platform will be either an F=16 or my favorite, the tail gunner position of a venerable B-25. You guys will be the second to see the shots!
