p.87 #1 · Mustang Air to Air

Finally got myself a 5D and spent a few hours on the observation deck at Santa Monica airport. Here is a sample of what I got with a little bit of cropping. Shot at 1/40th and 1/60th respectively.

I hope to befriend a few local pilots at some point and take to the skys, but for now I'll stick to being grounded. I also need to get a decent tele lens at some point. This 28-135 is not cutting it on the long side.

... I've been looking at some shots that are as gruesome in their horrible detail as they are technically fascinating. Two airplanes collided mid-air during the Radom air show in Poland, last saturday.

It's part of the deal, of course, air acrobatics aren't without risk... But seeing these images really leaves me speechless.

You're right, sad that it happens, but the odds are, eventually, it's going to happen. Aerobatics in itself are not so high risk, butas you throw low altitude, tight formation, and multiple airplanes into the mix the risks go up exponentially.

This is a great thread! IT would be better yet if most of JW's photos weren't showing just the red "X".

UGH! I didn't realize it until Scalpelx pointed it out, but the site has dropped pages and pages of my images again. What in the world do you think causes that? Remember when it happened before and no one could fix it, so I went back and rebuilt all the images? Anyone have any ideas, this is disappointing to say the least!

Is it possible the links are broken or the images have been moved from where they were originally?
I've noticed that if my images on smugmug are in a protected gallery - they don't show up after a while. I have to move them to another gallery so I can upload or link them. Just something to check on.

GML is booked and bought and all the arrangements are made - now if we should consider a secret handshake or something to recognize each other by - we'd be good to go! (not too sure about a red handkerchief hanging from a pocket - it might send the wrong message)

Let's ask Fred what we can do to get this fixed and prevent it in the future. I need your help on this.

I would imagine the bandwidth and file size of this thread alone is getting rather large and possibly bumping images off or something. We'll have to hit Fred up and see.

At a guess, it looks like the images that are placed using the Image Upload function of FM expire, for some reason.

The images are inserted through PHP code: .https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/message.php?Action=downloadfile&FileID=167361

Just by changing the number, you can find other images. Not all numbers are in use, removed images don't show up. Below the 195.xxx rage I can't find any image. They went *pooooff*, up in smoke, AWOL.

Thanks for your help Bill. It loses some of it's flavor if you start out with 60 pages of text and question marks where the photos should be.

Hey Bill,

The F-117 was taken at Nellis AFB. I still can't beleive they are retired. It seems as if it was just a few years back we learned about them.

The second picture with the Top Gun F-16 is from the Reno Air Races in 2004. I just love the variety of a/c in the shot. Never to be seen again....tornados, phantoms, etc.

Sagar,

Funny you mention that. As the Stealth Fighter was flying over us at the Sentry Eagle open house a few weeks ago one of the Sergeants mentioned that you'd probably never see these planes again.

That F16 with the dark and light blue looks a lot like the planes I have on my website on the F15 link. These were dark and light blue and dark and light brown from Nellis called the aggressor's or the aggressor squadron.

See ya,

~Bill~

HI Guys,

I realized I was getting old when I pulled up to the front gate of Nellis for an assignment, and there was a 117 on a pole! I'm much more comfortable with T-33's and F-86's on poles, doesn't make me feel like soon I'll be on a pole.

Jim,
If you can elaborate...What kind of an assignment at Nellis ? Whatever it was im sure it was a blast.

Hi Guys,

Nice F-117 shot. Yeah, it's really hard to believe that those planes are being retired already. I remember when they were announced. They're still brand new.

So after posting here the other day, I went over to my local airport with my camera. My first attemt at plane shots. Just some single engine Pipers and Cessnas around. I tell ya, it's not so easy. Who would have guessed? Getting a slow shutter speed for the full prop circle can be done. And getting a sharp picture can be done. But both in the same frame is not so easy. At 300 mm and 1/125 my pics were far from tack sharp. I've got some learning to do. And also I found that even if I could see the full prop circle, it was not very clear or easy to see. I guess the trick there is to have the sun hit the prop just right. Lighting was also difficult. Even though it was a gorgeous blue sky day, I could only wander around so much. So I was restricted on the angle of light hitting the planes. I'll have to go out at the times when I can see the sun hitting the planes. No shooting shadowed planes allowed.

At least I got out to try taking a few plane potos. That will lower the barrier to trying some more. It was fun.

Hey Jim, don't feel so bad. I still remember being in high school when Canada was still flying the CF-101 Voodoo! Long before the days of the 20D. I cant believe the F-18As and Bs are 25 years old now. I remember biulding a model of it back when it was the Northrop F-17A, and all of those different 'speculative' F-117 designs by the model companies weren't even close!
