Hey Aaron maybe this is something for you. http://www.foto-expositie.nl/tips.html
This is the site from a friend of mine he has huge amounts of slides and he makes digital copy's of them with his digital equipment.
It's in english so take a look and maybe it's of some use
Thanks Jan-Arie! that's a nice trick and just the kind of DIY technique I like to hack together.
Jim, yeah it sucks that the GA community in LA is so sparse and lacking in funds for any decent aircraft. I'll wait until I get my 5D then will start hanging around the airports. I'll definitely post in this thread first.
Well, the part where we worry about running out sure applies to us as well: always worried about running out of time, memory cards, money for gear... the list is endless.
I worry about running out of work, running out of beautiful skies. The other night I was dreaming I was on an assignment, hanging out the back of a C-130. The subject airplane was a Cub. I was so frustrated and while enjoying the C-130, kept wondering what in the world I chose that platform for. Literally I was getting an upset stomach over it. I even reasoned that I was dreaming and the whole thing was inconsequential, but I couldn't stop fretting about how the assignment was going. I finally woke completely and convinced myself that it was all ok. So, as if there wasn't enough real stuff to worry about, I manufacture absurd fictional things in my sleep to drive myself crazy. I guess therapy would be a productive use of funds.
I don't know how many of you have heard, Canon just announced the sequel to the flagship, the 21.1 mega-pixel 1Ds MKIII. I hope to have my first one before GML, looks unlikely though. As usual, it's a beauty!

I had been considering the H-3/P45 combo but just hated to spend the $$$$, glad I waited.. considering this review.....
We've also had some more direct comments (thanks) on the performance of 1Ds Mk3 (pre release) models in the studio
"picture quality thrashes a P25 back and except in very bright lights is generally better than a P45 because of the low low noise and amazing colour/dynamic range. There is phenomenal shadow and highlight detail in the raw files, photographers using the 1Ds3 are creating HDR 'looks' by processing the same RAW file 3 or 4 times to bring our different exposure"
I rarely dream while I sleep - but then i only sleep 4 or 5 hours and they say you don't dream until the 7th hour. That said - Jimmy Buffet says it best...
Therapy is extremely expensive.
Poppin' bubble wrap is radically cheap
You chose which one helps with your problem.
I'm gonna get some sleep.
too much of a good thing may be too much though!
So I wonder what the cost of the 1DsMIII will be and whether they will have similar focus issues as the current MIII. Do you know when or if they are working on a firmware upgrade?
Oddly, Jimmy Buffett is one of the most tightly wrapped, rude people you could imagine meeting. I spent several days shooting him in Phoenix a few years back. Not the laid back "Margaritaville" guy I was expecting. Some celebs you are better off not meeting. I walked in with the leader of the Thunderbirds and he asked him if he'd like to go for a VIP ride with them, he said, "Why would I want to do that?" We were all speechless.
Don't know about the focusing issues, I'm still not convinced mine has any. The issues I'm seeing on mine may still be tied to finding the right technique. On the other hand, a camera shouldn't require this much technique. I'd settle for a little less technology and a little more reliable performance. Maybe I shouldn't buy products that are smarter than I am, but that would leave me with a hammer and a non-electric tooth brush! Mfr's list is the standard $7995.00 Canon settled on with the first 1D. Not likely to change seeing as how they can sell every one they make and then some. They're giving a December 10 release date.
Jim - you mentioned a few posts back that you often use manual focus to control what is seen. Do you have a different focusing screen on your camera from what normally comes on the Canons? (At least on the Canon 20D and 5D that I have - I don't know what comes on those more 'spensive versions)
Absolutely nice photos! Smoke rings are really cool - especially way up there!
Anyone going to GML - which area of town and/or smaller city would be good to stay for a hotel - don't know anything about Columbus other than Rickenbaker Field is on the south side. The hotel listings on the GML site is rather long and spread out.
For those Nikon shooters among us, there is a press release in Tokyo at midnight (EDT) where it's widely rumored that the D3 and D300 camera bodies will be announced. Check late tonight or early tomorrow morning to see what actually happened!
I either use the standard screen or an architectural screen with a grid etched in it. The architectural grid is a little more difficult to focus. You can use the red rectangles to confirm perfect focus in the 1D models. I don't use manual exclusively, but I do use it a lot, especially when shooting wide apertures.
Hmmm, I don't think I've heard of an architectural screen before. Guess I'll have to go look it up. I was thinking of replacing my standard screen with one of those microprism focusing screens, possibly the Haoda, to help with manual focusing. I am used to that method from my old 35mm camera days. Thanks for replying.
The architectural screen is of use if you're using a TS lens and shooting interiors or exteriors. The surface makes it slightly more difficult to focus. I don't know anything about non-Canon screens, just make sure they don't affect metering.
Good to hear from you. I had a dozen made up for AirVenture with my initials and "Jimwilsonphotography.com" underneath on the back. Gunny picked the image, which turned out to be the shot of the Mustang on take off that I shot for Pilot Journal. Got a lot of comments during the week. Are you planning to attend GML?
