Judging from the patches on these folks vests, many of them have been there done that and have the t-shirt! The rest are just people of conviction there to insure honor and respect, God Bless 'em all!
Well when you lack talent ya gotta use every trick in the book. The gentleman hand in hand with his children was something! Forget the MKIII focus issues, my viewfinder kept filling with salt water on Saturday, I demand to know what Canon is going to do about it, better start a new thread!
Jim,
It was a great day. It's hard to describe the feeling to be a part of this group of Patriots. Unfortunately, every gathering isn't for a good celebration like this was. Today we buried 2 young servicemen in the DFW area and have another one later this week. That's 99% of what the PGR does around the country. Thanks for being there buddy

Didn't you read the manual? Its winter/cold environment camera only For summer they'll make one with the 's' in the name
Re: the IS question, I really don't pay much attention to IS. Oddly I don't know if I've ever switched IS to mode 2 on any of my lenses. About 2/3 of the time I don't even switch it on. When IS first came out I did extensive testing and it seemed to me that the 3 stop advantage they say it gives you is about 2 stops over rated. Anyone else agree? Maybe it's just me.
Hi Jim,
It's lens specific and situation/subject specific. I've only worked with the magnificent 70-200/2.8 L IS and I can vouch for its effectiveness. At 200 mm on crop (making it 360 effectively) I can get hand-held shots sharp at about 1/200th. If I take my time. and watch my stance and breathing, I can get below that.
Canon claims "up to 3 stops" for the 3rd gen IS that's in the 70-200/2.8L IS. 1/200 --> 1/100 --> 1/50 --> 1/25. Does it deliver? Sharp shots at 200 mm at 1/25th? No problem. 1/20th takes some effort, and with great care I can even get acceptably sharp shots at 1/15th. So IS definately does deliver at these slow shutter speeds, it improves my hand-held capability with at least 3 stops. Given that the IS system samples movement at 20 kHz, I'd expect it to work at faster shutter speeds as wel but I've never put that to the test.
Canon now has lenses with second, third and fourth generation IS out there (The 70-200/4L IS is the only one sofar with 4th gen IS, for "up to 4 stops") so mileage may vary between lenses. Also, IS has a small delay before it completely engages. If the kind of shooting doesn't always allow for that lag, IS becomes less effective too.
Your mission with the PGR points out that "Freedom isn't free" isn't just a cliche. Thanks for the good work you and the rest of the folks in the guard do to insure our men and women receive the respect and honor they deserve. It was an honor to be with you all on Saturday, I look forward to another opportunity.
For those of you planning to attend the GML 2007, it looks like the venue continues to build. We'll have the f-15, F-16,F-22 demo teams both Saturday and Sunday, on top of the T-Birds and all the Warbird activity and airshow performers. We're organizing at least a 51 P-51 formation flight too. I'm stoked! I better order some more 16 gig cards!!
Far away isn't the only problem! I'm trying to figure out how to fly from Atlanta to get my dad out of Oklahoma and to Columbus for the weekend without flying out to Wichita, driving to Oklahoma and back and catching a Delta flight to Columbus without sitting in Atlanta for a 3.5 hour layover on the way. I'll be spending more time in the air and nowhere close enough to shoot out the windows at the show all day Friday and Sunday. Whata mess! Got my work cut out for me - but dad wants to go too and since its his generation and one of the last things we'll probably do like this...

yeah and a couple of spare battery's for my epson fieuuw it's gonna be good
I really want to go and when I mentioned it to my dad - he really perked up as if that was something he'd like to do. Logistics are tough though since he lives in a small town in OK and can't drive anywhere.
I hope to be at the air show on Friday afternoon through Sunday and really look forward to meeting you and all the guys from here that show up. Also hope to see Paul after I guess 25 years now. He sent me a signed copy of Air to Air 1 and I have to thank him for it - between that series of books and this forum - it makes me appreciate the talent represented and the opportunity I have to look over y'alls shoulder to learn.
