The beta cameras that are making their way around camera stores don't have final firmware and the JPEGs on their LCD screens will look far worse (esp. with respect to noise) than what the real camera can do. I wouldn't base much on that, therefore.

Revised: In fact, I'll be even more blunt and say that the LCD JPEG previews of the pre-production cameras look awful compared to what the camera can actually do.

You're selling the 20 Flektogon? Why? It's a great lens, cheap and not always easy to find. I would never sell mine.

Well, I won't have an SLR after I get the M8 :) I might pick up an R10 later, but the Flektogon won't fit on that either. Besides, it needs disassembling and lubing. The focusing is not smooth. Other than that, it is great, although towards the extreme corners it gets very soft very quickly. I think that it would probably be great on a crop Canon.

So, what is the deal with the M8 and the preview on the back screen? The M8 I tried had firmware 1.2, one version earlier than the supposed final firmware 1.3. I can't imagine huge differences? On that M8 and my 5D I saw visible differences at ISO 640. Are you saying that these differences disappear on the computer? What about ISO 1250? I want to know exactly how good the M8 really is, high-ISO-wise, before I commit to getting an M8, but I am very hopeful. It sounds all good so far.

I am sorely tempted by the M8. For someone like me, who wants to shoot mainly street photography, the 5D wasn't a great move, much as I like it. 6 months later I still haven't resolved that. I'm even tempted to go back to film M6 for street work.

Selling the 5D and a 24-70, 100 macro, 70-200, Oly 21, might get me somewhere near an M8 and a lens. But that's one hell of a shift. And given that even if I pay my deposit now, my local UK dealer says the first ones won't be arriving till end
...Show more

What I saw in the store today almost resolved my mind. The rangefinder focusing was weird, and I felt very awkward and newbie-ish, but I still got sharper results than with the 5D. I was a bit slow focusing, because I didn't know what I was looking for, and didn't know how long to search, but this would go away with practice, I am pretty sure. My only remaining outstanding question is high-ISO. I don't need the M8 to be as good as the 5D, which is probably a losing proposition anyway, but if it is better at ISO 800 (ie. almost as good at ISO 1250), then I would be very happy. If it was at par at ISO 640 (the setting possible on the M8, in that range), I would be okay. If the M8 was already clearly losing at ISO 640, then I would be very nervous about switching. From what Sean is hinting without saying much, this isn't the case, and the M8 is very good at ISO 640.

To be honest, I love the 5D. It feels great in the hand, and takes fantastic pictures, and is maybe something like the third- or fourth-best SLR in the world, IQ-wise, at least at about that resolution or better, but it weighs a lot (I can't imagine lugging around a 1D/D2/DMR-series camera, to be honest), and I would love to pack a whole system into my bag at less weight than a 5D plus three lenses.

Okay, I think I am all caught up on posts after my DSL modem died last week. Sorry about the flood :)

In the browser address bar there is a page number (-1) at the end. Simply change that number to go to ANY page you want. If you feel that the page is not turning for you, simply increment that number by 1. If you go too far, you will be redirercted back again.

Example: The current page is 35. This is the current address in the bar:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/458739/34

The 34 at the end is page 35-1. If you want to go to page '22', simply change the end number to 21 (22-1). ( https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/458739/21 )

This gets rid of all the page turn stuff.

Don't forget that all Images shown on the display are some kind of JPGs - the IQ from that has very little to do with the final quality of DNGs converted in C1. After that, you could use some kind of noise filter and precisely adapt it to your specific purposes. Those high-iso-results should be much better than the shots on the display of the camera.
The pixels of the M8 are 40% smaller than the 5D-pixels, but I think the sensor-technology itself has a little bit less noise (latest CCD-technology), I don't think that noise levels are THAT different - and I'm not talking about elegantly filtered Canon-JPGs (like Mr. Puts...), I'm talking about RAW vs. RAW!

M8 pixels are actually 20% smaller than 5D pixels (6.8 µm vs 8.2 µm).
The pixel pitch is the same of the 1DmkII.
Considering it's a latest technology CCD sensor, albeit without AA filter, it should be relatively clean.

Sean, Guy, Carsten, or others that have handled the camera,
Although I like a smallish camera but I understood that there is a grip that will also be available to increase the camera handling - How much bulk is added to the camera and do we know whether it is just a grip or an additional battery compartment?

Thanks,
Joshua

Don't forget the 75s! In fact, I am most interested in the 75 Lux vs. 75 Cron issue. I have the 80 Lux-R, and I simply love this lens. I am wondering which 75 I should get for the M8. I think the 75mm being like 100mm is more interesting on the M8.

I agree don't forget the 75's. I consider the 75 to be the long lens for the M8. I to have been wondering to go Lux or Corn. This week I'm leaning to Cron.

Yeah, I too am leaning towards the cron 75. Smaller size, better balance. Too bad it's going to cost me $500 more than the lux.

The grip does improve the handling - but I found it a bit short My index finger kept looking for a non-existent shutter release on top.

The grip is good, moves your hand round towards the front of the camera. German price is €150, Adorama are showing it at $189.95.

Looking at the photos of the grip that was my impression as well.

I have an early Abrahamsson Rapidgrip for the M series and find it to be not quite tall enough. I believe he now has a taller version with an additional finger notch. Like you, I felt as if there should be a shutter release on top.

Bob.

Speaking of shutter releases, does the M8 have a provision for an electronic remote release like the DMR? I know you can use a cable release.

Rob,

I can only see a USB 2.0 mini-B socket on the left side of the camera. There are no other connections.

Are you sure you want the 35 at all? If you get the 35 and a 75, you will still need the 50 to bridge the gap. On the other hand, with the 28 and 50 and 75, you can push the range of a three-lens combo towards the wide angle and not have a significant gap. I tried the 50 Lux Asph. today. Gorgeous!

Yup, as I already have the 35 1.4 asph as part of my film M legacy
No 75 as it was not a fit for M3 and did not really need another huge lens along with the Noct - the only M 75 was the lux until recently. Methinks 50 as the max FL for the M8 when working also with a dSLR

The official price list says 150 Euro, which would work out at 195 $. Seems the USA gets a bargain.

Nikon sells a widget that slides into a hotshoe and has PC socket on the side. Not sure if it will fit correctly on the M8. However, the ISO connections should be common to both brands

there are aftermarket ones that work quite well and they are also available with a voltage and current limiter so you can run high voltage flash opto isolating the camera and showing a nominal 6-9 volts to the camera.

the folks who make the peanut synch made the ones i use, forget the name.
