My understanding is that there are about 10 or 12 EF 1200's in existence. Canon pretty much knows the whereabouts of all of them. I was under the impression that all of them are either in the hands of major news agencies, magazines and of course Canon's own arsenal of equipment. Canon will loan them out on occasion to photographers with the proper credentials. The lenses usually show up at major sporting events, trade shows etc. The lens is build to order and not a dealer stocking item. You pay for it and Canon will build it.
I am one of the principal moderators on DV Info (the site linked above) and on several occasions members have posted about ebay auctions for the EF 1200mm. It takes forever to get ebay to shut down these fraudulent auctions.
