Here's a single 430ex through a 30" white shoot-through umbrella placed at 45 degrees camera right and about a foot above the model. I used a silver reflector (the kind you use in your car windshield in the summer) on camera left for fill.
WOW! I love your first shot!
I guess you meter of the sky then use your strobe to light the people?
I would love to know how you achieve this, please share.
Basically ... I set the strobe to a stop under full power, aperture at f/9 or so to give me the right exposure. Then I set the shutter speed to 1/200th to underexpose the background by about 2/3 stop or 1 stop.
Wow... I was planning on buying two strobes to start off with but after viewing all 54 pages of this forum i'm thinking I might just start off with one... It looks like I want an octobox and a beauty dish... hmmm
I've got a question about reflection material like the clear acrylic sheet I used in the antler/skull shot a couple of posts back. When I use a white paper beneath the 1/16 inch thick acrylic sheet I didn't really notice the double reflection as when I put a black sheet of paper underneath.
The double reflection comes from the light reflecting through the clear sheet and bouncing off both the top and bottom of the clear sheet.
It's not really noticable in the small picture there, but when it's printed larger it begins to stand out and not in a good way.
I priced some solid black acrylic sheets to avoid the double reflection and was stunned by the high cost. Is there another similar glossy material to use for similar shots that's won't break the bank other than spray painting a glossy black onto a sheet of something?
(by the way I think maybe a large mirror would have been better for that particular one rather than the acrylic)

here are a few examples of one light setups.
Wow. These photos are awesome! I love the style! I can't wait to save up for some light. I might even sell off my 85/1.8 or something to fund it! A single Vivitar or Sunpak into a small softbox or umbrella..... I can't wait to start playing with light!
I have a shoot in 20min... I'm using my off shoe cord and 420EX just to move the flash a little away from the camera. Gives me a little more flexibility, but I can't wait to move it off completely and have manual control!!
