p.1 #1 · Are Nikon lenses weatherproof?

I know the D2x and D200 are supposed to be weather sealed, but I haven't heard which, if any, Nikon lenses are weather resistant. Could someone please enlighten me?

I know the 70-200mm f2.8 VR and 150mm f2.8 (AF-S, VR version) have extra weather seals, like the rubber ring on the mount, but I don't know if that makes them weather "proof".

My 18-70 has a rubber seal ring around the mount and that lens is most certainly NOT weather proof.

But most of the high end ($1000+) AF-S lenses are very resistant to the elements, like rain, sand, etc.

So thats the,

17-35 2.8 AF-S
28-70 2.8 AF-S
80-200 2.8 AF-S
70-200 2.8 VR AF-S

300, 400, 500, 600, etc etc and so on.

70-200 2.8 VR AF-S

Actually, none of the lenses listed above (except the 70-200 VR) are weatherproof.

The Nikon lenses that ARE weatherproof are:

  1. 18-70 AFS
  2. 18-200 VR
  3. 17-55 f2.8 AFS
  4. 70-200 VR
  5. 105 VR Macro
  6. 200 f2 VR
  7. 300 f2.8 VR
  8. 200-400 VR

I've used a number of my lenses with wet snow coming down, and had no problems... I would call it more like "weather resistant" than proof.

Any comments on "how" weatherproof they are?

I'm surprised that the 18-70 AF-S is weatherproof... that's just awesome . Is that why it's included in the D200 kit?

I have used my 80-200 AF-S in pretty heavy rain and it stood up perfectly fine. I just dried it off with a towel when I got inside.

I use my D70 with either a 80-200 F2.8 or 120-300 F2.8 sigma in heavy rain and have never had an issue. I just wipe them down after the event..

I am surprised how weather proof the toy D70 is..

The 18-70 is NOT weather proof, are you kidding me.. Just because it has the rubber ring doesnt mean its weather proof....

The thing I was getting at in my first post was that all of the high end lenses are pretty much as good as you are going to get, they all can handle harsh weather. Rain, snow, sand, etc very well.

Cliff, where did you get that list?

Also, I too would like an answer to n3xo's question, since the 18-70, being non-internal zoming seems pretty non-weather-proof to me.

All of these comments are flying around without a definition of weatherproof or even weather resistant.

The answer isn’t a yes/no thing – it’s to what degree - unless you're talking about Nikonos..............

I had to used my 28-70 in the rain once and it didn't like it very much. It was bugging out for a little while afterwards but after everything dried off it's working fine again.
