Does anyone use a loupe with the ground glass or sliding back to help focus?

Heh, I should just insert here (although I see the toungue-in-cheek) that I don't consider the two related. He could be both, in theory. He does take some nice shots, but the ones I saw on the DVD I had never seen on his site, surprisingly.

... or do the MF lenses blow away the small camera's lenses? How much is lens and how much is sensor? Isn't that the question that Guy originally posed?

Smaller lenses outresolve the larger lenses until we get into the HR/XL line of Large Format lenses. MF lenses range in price depending on system, HC lenses in the thousands per. New from dealer sensors can range anywhere from 5k to 30k. Pick your poison.

I think we need to be more precise about this. First, this is a general statement, it is not universally true -- there are many medium format lenses that resolve as well as or better than some small format lenses. Second, Smaller lenses outresolve the larger lenses for a given area of film, but since they cover a larger area of film (or sensor) they can resolve more information than small format lenses. Third, there is no physical reason why medium format lenses would resolve less than small format lenses. It is economics. Size they cover a much large area of film or sensor, they generally don't need to resolve as well as small format lenses, and increasing resolution just makes the lenses more expensive (so there is some optimal combination of resolution and cost -- which may be different for each manufacturer based on their capabilities and their customer/market expectations for their products).
The HR/XL line of Large Format lenses is probably a good example of this.

Mark,

Many of the guys on RG said they use GG and a loupe to focus. Although I have been reading more about and talking with other photographers on the phone about live preview. The guys using live preview to focus say it is the only way to fly. They claim to be getting great results on focus very quickly. I've got a call in to Leaf to see if there are any limitations on the Aptus 65/75 for live preview. I really want that feature.

Yes Andy i am still in the thought that the Leica lenses for the R system are better than the MF lenses but the sensor is the overriding factor and what would happen if we made the DMR sensor 22 mpx would than the DMR be equal, better or worse. of course there is none but what if. We ll know the 39 mpx backs are the best you can get but all this lens and sensor matching up is interesting to talk about. Anyway as far as MR is concerned he is a geek like all of us

Guy if you really like the Leica glass and just want to use a Leaf 65 back with your existing Leica glass for $3K you can buy a Kapture Group TrueWide:
http://www.kapturegroup.com/leaf/leaf.html#sba
No movements though and you won’t cover the full 33x44mm sensor. Just a thought.

FM forum software...the turn page thing. LC10.0.1 makes a great file, but I still prefer Raw Developer, though I'm still learning it.

Oh! I C

Hey David, in all your research did you ever look at the Cambo Ultima 23? Is it any good? I might be able to get one used for under $3K from a guy out here in California. Do you have any opinion on it? Or am I better off waiting for the chance to get a Arca, Linhof or Sinar used down the road, etc?

David, have you tried live focusing yet with the Aptus 65?

Just spoke with Leaf and live preview works great with any Leaf back and with any view camera like your Arca or a little Alpa. I've spoken to a few people that use live preview to focus with other brands of backs and they just say it's the only way to fly. I think I'd rather use live preview and carry a really small notebook rather than deal with a PIA sliding back or the ground glass and swap method to focus.

He mentioned live preview doesn't work with the DSLRs which I already assumed. I don't know why you would even care about that.

New in box Aptus 75 for Mamiya going for $22K on eBay in 10 mins. I contacted the seller about another item and he seems totally legit:
Item number: 7610463482
Happy bidding.

The problem I have with live preview is two fold. 1) I'd have to bring my laptop in the field and that means finding a platform for that so I can watch that while focusing, and getting housing for it as well to shield it so I can actually see. 2) It's powered by the fw bus in the laptop via LC8, so it cuts the powerbook battery in half, and who knows how long you'll really get. It really only makes sense if you're shooting in the studio...

Now THIS is very interesting. The tru wide suggests it takes a Contax 645 mount, and they have a Leica R mount for lens.
It talks about backs that can be triggered with their cable.

How can the image circle of the Leica R cover a MF (645) circle? Am I reading wrong? (I think longer lenses have bigger image circles than 35mm)

I know that optics can be adjusted to form circle at different distance thus sure can get a Leics R to focus farther back and mabe get to a 60mm dimension rather than a 36mm. Also have never seen how far the image circle of typical 35mm lens are designed, LF of course can be much bigger and adapt to shifts.

This would mean another way to get Leica into big megapixel range. Is that what tru wide is doing??

or Is this not what is happening?

Victor

Bogen makes a few gadgets that will hold a notebook to the legs of your Gitzo tripod. These are cheap and you can hold the camera and notebook all on one tripod. They’re not half bad. They also make little notebook stand that fits on top of a separate tripod. I haven’t tried these.

I think if I’m going to cart that much stuff in I’d want to try the live preview and a notebook isn’t much bigger than a sliding back. Otherwise I’m just going to pick up my H1 or 1Ds2.

The power is another issue. My notebook can plug into my car to recharge. I guess for on site work you’d need a $1K Dynalite battery power source (or Honda generator) but that does start to be a lot of gear…hmm… I hadn’t thought about the power issue. So you can’t force the back to use its own battery instead of the FireWire?

I don't know how much of the sensor you'd lose with the Leica glass. The Aptus 65 is 33x44mm for 28MP. You might want to call Kapture Group and see what they say. I've heard they're friendly and don't bite. It looks like a cool way to use all that great Leica glass.
