I have no camera with built in picture styles, but am in the position to buy a second hand 1d2 (not N). From what I read the picture styles could be helpful for my wedding and portrait photos. I downloaded the latest DPP software and see there is a picture styles drop down list. Will it work with RAW files if I buy the 1D2? Or is this just activated if I open a file of the cameras that support picture styles? Will it be better to skip the 1D2 and buy a new N? In case it works for the 1D2, will it also work for 300D files and others? Are colours consistent between the different cameras and the same picture style?
It works with all Raw files, as far as I know. For example the 20D does not have a "Faithful" camera setting, but DPP produces visible differences between Standard and Faithful on 20D CR2 Raw files.
Per the Canon Picture Style web site: RAW files from previous EOS digital SLRs -- even those without built-in Picture Styles control -- can now have the full range of Picture Styles applied to them if processed in the new verison of DPP. Full RAW file processing support, along with Picture Styles support, now includes each and every EOS-1D series digital SLR, the EOS 20D, 10D, D60, and D30, as well as every version of the EOS Digital Rebel (300/350D).
And from another page on that web site: When a RAW image shot with an EOS-1D series camera not equipped with Picture Style is opened with Digital Photo Professional Ver. 2.0 the "Neutral" Picture Style is used for development. RAW images shot with other EOS DIGITAL cameras not equipped with Picture Style are developed with the "Standard" Picture Style.
If you use an EOS DIGITAL camera other than the EOS-1D series, please note that it employs Contrast (tone curve slider) and Saturation settings one level below those used by the EOS-1D Mark II N/EOS 5D. If you want to create images the same as those possible with a camera equipped with Picture Style, simply raise the Contrast and Saturation settings by one level....Show more →
