p.1 #1 · big releases? there's still time...

i've been half-heartedly following the threads around canon's recent additions to their line-up... the 30D would seem like a great camera if i didn't already own a 20D, which is also a great camera... i do like the idea of a faster focussing 85L... and the 17-55 2.8 looks interesting, but i do plan to go FF so i'm not really interested in owning it...

that said... i don't have a whole lot of experience with release cycles and marketing plans, but... photokina is still coming up and it seems like a much better time for BIG announcements... all this talk about Canon marketing has had me thinking... they're still going to make a ton of $$ from the 30D and the new lenses...

when photokina comes around (conveniently just before the christmas shopping frenzy starts)... they'll probably drop the big guns then(hopefully?)... at this point in time people are still recouping from holiday spending or winter travelling.... people will have more money to spend at that time of year... and Canon will be happily waiting... it seems to make perfect sense for them to wait...

of course i am guilty of speculating that Canon will actually have something 'interesting' to release in the Fall season, but of course I am also hopeful...

in the meantime... all i can hope is that my 20D's (or 85L's) market value don't go into the dumpster... on one hand I don't really care because I don't plan on selling either right now... but in the future when time comes... it would be nice to get something of decent value (for the body anyway)... as for the 85L, mark II or no... i think the 85L will always be worth its weight in gold...

anyway... for those who are looking to upgrade (myself as well, eventually)... i guess we'll have to sit tight...

... and happy shooting!!

I don't know why everyone is so determined to upgrade there cameras for? I mean just becuse a new camera comes out does it really mean you need to buy a new camera?
Whats wrong with your old cameras? I mean If you where using a older model like a D30 or D60, 10D, 300D I can really understand, But the pepole with 20D's I just don't see why you would need to upgrade unless you enjoy spending big $$ every 18 months!

Spend more time shooting and improving your photography rather then working out the quickest way of sending yourself to the poor house!

My 2 cents.

I'm through with the body wars---I'm ready for the price wars.

I'd be content if Canon's "big guns" were actually $900 dollar 30d and $1800 5d.

i'm not sure who 'everyone' is, but i do have reasons why i would like to upgrade... and you're absolutely right just because a new camera comes out it doesn't mean you need to buy a new camera, but for pros who make a living at it i could see a strong reason why, but then... to each their own... as for spending more time shooting and improving your photography? amen to that!...

EOS20, personally I hate the idea of upgrading.

That's not what I'm after. I want the camera that I want and then stick with it.
Problem is, that camera doesn't exist yet. And I'm not asking for much. I'd just love to have the 5D with 2 more frames per second and I be set for life.

Denizen, I know what you mean. I feel the same way. The 5D is 95% the camera I want, if it was either:

- ~2200$ now I'd jump on it -or-
- better AF point layout along with 11 AF sensors and the existing 6 helpers, I'd buy it at its current price and be happy for years.

Ever meet my neighbors? The Joneses?

Personally, I'll stick with my 20D. My next body won't be for a while, and when it does happen, I assume it'll be a FF.

The camera I want exists unfortunately it is beyond my price range.I honestly believe the 1dsm2 would be all the camera I would ever need. I'm not being a stupid person just picking the most expensive camera out there. The next camera I pick will have to be a 1 series because I personally find anything less then 100% viewfinder coverage simply unacceptable.

I suppose I could make do with the 1ds, however for it literally to be the last camera I would ever buy I would want the better handling of the high ISOs that the mark2 offers. 4 Frames per second is perfect for me. Three is almost enough and I four would be absolutely perfect. It's a shame the 5d doesn't have full frame coverage, what a crying shame.

Add ECF and more (or more sensible placed) AF points and I'm in total agreement.
