which would set you back approx. 2000 euro? and a lot of extra swapping I assume?
I might have to switch the lens a lot. But my point is, 17MM is really not wide enough for me. I will definately need to go 10-22mm if I stick with 1.6X crop body. And if I have the extra $1150 to pick up a fast zoom, I would rather go with 24-70L.
By the way, I don't have that extra amount of money, and I won't mind "zooming with feet", so I actually picked up Sigma 30mm f1.4 and EF 85MM f1.8 and I am buying a 10-22mm now. The cost of this lineup is close to $1150 and I believe it is better than the one lens of EF-S 17-55.
The 24-105 is close to equivalent on a full-frame 5D (with some additional range at both ends). The depth of field on full-frame is roughy equivalent to a 1.33 stop wider aperture on 1.6x crop. The 5D high iso noise provides around a one stop advantage versus the 20D/30D. The implication is that a 24-105 at f/4 with ISO pushed one stop will provide similar noise/DoF to a 17-55 on a 20D/30D.
It remains to be seen whether the 17-55 provides advantages in distortion, corner sharpness, etc. versus the 24-105 on a full-frame. With the reduced zoom range and design for 1.6x, it may very well.

but really, there is no FF equivalent that i know of for this lens.

I eagerly awaited this lens and had hopes up high that it would be f/2.8. Well, it is and with IS to boot. This is my dream lens, but from what I've seen in the various threads are surprisingly a lot of negative reactions, at least more than I expected. I think the range, aperture and IS make it a killer combo. Yes it is pricey, but nothing out of the ordinary considering the aperture, "L" lens elements and IS. What is your opinion on this new "G" EF-S?
I'm waiting to see how it performs before I make any decisions but -
If it's a quality lens, I'd strongly consider selling my 17-40 and 28-75 to trade up to this lens. I'm seeing a one lens solution for most of my landscape and walkaround shooting - no carrying a second lens and no having to swap. It's also constant f2.8 and I get a bonus in IS which should be a help in shooting late evening/night shots without a monopod.
It may even save me the cost of a 30 f1.4 which I'm strongly considering now for available light shots. Yeah it won't stop motion but my problem is usually camera movement in these situations.
