Just ordered one of these after so many positive comments posted here - thanks everyone, especially Jessica Luchesi - and it's hard to over-look the "problem" with the prices for everything EXCEPT the 100GB model: It's only USD $3.00 per GB. Every other size is more than USD $3.00 per GB ....
Unless you really NEED the 120GB capacity, the "best bang for the buck" is clearly the 100GB unit.
The best bang for the buck is the empty enclosure. One can utilize any common drive with a 3+ year mfg. warranty rather than being dependent on Sanho, which may or may not be in existence 3+ years from now.
that is a good question. one that i haven't looked into. i stick with the Maha cells. i found the energizers charge well but do not hold the charge well. even afer being coaxed into maturity.

got me a 60gb seagate 8MB cache drive for $60 from best buy back in december. haven't needed above that as of yet. we'll see with the jobo
Oddly enough, no. Watching the charger until the "working" light goes out and immediately removing them, they barely feel warm to the touch. No worries ...
Are they fully charged? Putting them in any of my Canon flash units, the "ready" light comes on almost instantly and the "between-flash" recycle time is amazingly fast.
Except for a bulky, heavy, hard-to-carry high-powered box power source - even a belt-clipped model - no other battery source cranks up these flash units like the 2500 mAh Duracell NiMh rechargeables.

Not sure about that. I looked at the price for the bare unit, then Googled for a 100GB 2.5 inch HDD from any e-tailer .... and it didn't even come CLOSE to adding up as cheaper.
As to them (the Hyperdrive distributor) not being in business in another 3 years, I'd worry about something a little more expensive - like who makes domestic cars - before I'd worry about some 300 dollar gizmo that will add to my field-shooting efficiency RIGHT NOW.

I went to put together my hyperdrive tonight and the 4 screws that they mention to remove from the back in order to install the hard drive aren't there!! No screws anywhere in the box or packaging. This sucks! Hopefully they will get some to me shortly.

Have you purchased the empty housing; supplying your own hard drive?
If so, this is another reason to buy one already assembled: No parts missing!!!

Yes, I bought one that was a housing only. I have a 60GB hard drive lying around that I wanted to use. The instruction book specifically says remove the 4 screws from the back to install your own hard drive. Those 4 screws weren't there---or anywhere else to be found in the packaging. They had nice touches like including the mini-screwdriver and 2 sets of 2300mah batteries but they forgot the darn screws. Sigh.....
One of my HD80s had the bottom panel already installed with four screws. In the other case there was a bag with six screws. I received 8 AA cells with each HD80, but they are only 2300 mAH. At the time only four free cells were listed on the site, but my HD80s were backordered for over two weeks.

We have batteries in Brazil, and they do sell in drugstores. What I meant to test will be if regular batteries, those you can find in any newspaper stand or drugstore, will start the HD80 or not.
Anyway, never heard of any brands named Varta. The most common here are Panasonic and Duracell.

I know the Hyperdrive units are on backorder, the website says until March 17, but has anyone who ordered a Hyperdrive lately actually received it?
I've been reading threads about Hyperdrive on DPReview's Storage and Media board for quite some time. Late last year there were a lot of positive comments about how prompt the company was in shipping, answering email questions and straightening out problems. The guy running the company was even posting on the board. Then about the time of Chinese New Year he stopped posting and they seemed to getting behind both on orders and email responses. Lately there's been some negative post about not answering initial emails and problems with defective returns. It almost sounds as if it's a one-man operation being run from his apartment and it's reached the point where the business is too successful for one person to handle.
Anyway, the unit sounds like something I might want to buy but before I order I'd sure like to have a fair degree of certainty of actually receiving it and in a reasonably timely manner.
I ordered my Hyperdrive the day before the 'backordered' appeared on the web page. I sent several emails to determine the order status - no replies. Received the order without a problem in about 2 weeks.
Seems like bad administration, but a good product.
Yup, terrible administration, but the goods are worth a minimal hassle. I ordered my unit on the 12th, no news from the company yet. My Email, with questions, sent on the 9th, was also left without an answer. The website still says the items will be backordered untill the 17th ( yesterday ) and if you order before the 17th, you'll get the bonus items.
I guess it's time those folks consider leaving their daytime jobs to stick to the company... but as long as my unit arrives working without problems, it's fine by me.
