They are the same in picture quality. If you shoot pictures with the same lens using the D50 and the D2X using identical techniques neither you nor anyone else will be able to tell the differences.
My suggestion is that you go to the store and handle both cameras. Learn the features of both and see which one will fit your photographic style better after you handled both.
Quality wise you will not see the differences.

At some point one really has to stop comparing marginal image qualities or the slight inherent differences from one camera to the next and get on with the business of enjoying the hobby or livelihood with the camera in hand.
I have arrived at that point and I can honestly tell you that this photography hobby is a heck of a lot more enjoyable than worrying if my camera is as good as yours.
