I don't dislike Nikon, Just chose Canon in the end. I was going to buy a Nikon until I found out they where charging extra for the Nikon capture software, so I bought a Canon becuse they had a Free RAW software converter and a good software bundle.
I like Canon but it doesen't mean I wont buy a Nikon in the future though. A Camera is a tool, I don't really care about brand loyalty. I will still keep my canon gear though.
I don't dislike any company that provides good products. I think Nikon cameras definitely have a lot of plusses over Canon and vice versa. The D2X and D200 are very good cameras and I wouldn't mind owning either one. I ended up with Canon initially by accident. I wanted to buy a Nikon 90X but the shop was out of stock and steered me to an EOS 5 instead. I think it was a good move and love the EOS system especially it medium to longer lenses. I find the Nikon lens system confusing and think Canon has certainly led the way with USM and IS. I prefer the image quality of Canon's DSLR to Nikon's but mainly on the noise front. Both produce superb images.
If could afford it I'd own both brands. A D2X would be my wildlife camera and a 1Ds II for everything else.
Fanboys exist for just about all brands and a quite pathetic in their slavish idolization of the brand they own. Unfortunately the forums are full of them. The Nikon forums seem to be a bit more unfriendly if you dare criticize the product, but both sides are guilty of it.
I went with Canon because here it is very hard to buy/sell used non-Canon gear. If I wanted to switch now for whatever reason I would loose at least 50% of the money that I invested. It is stupid reason but I like Canon because of that.
When I switched to digital I had to start all over because I had an AE-1 Program and FD lenses ( still have them ) I chose Canon because of the lenses
70-200/4 Nikon has no such lens
Nikon primes only have AF-S from 300mm up
Now I am very glad I chose Canon because there now is an "affordable" FF Canon
I choose canon because of their lens lineup. Canon just offers more. Nevertheless I like Nikon as a company more than canon. They sell photography gear, point. Canon sells printers, LCD's etc. etc. I don't care about that stuff.
I used Nikon for 25 years, Canon's earlier domination of high MP digital cameras and more comprehensive lens line-up led me to switch systems when I went to a total digital workflow. I still love the ergonomics of the Nikon bodies, though. On the other hand, the lenses seem to be getting less comfortable to use....

This type of brand loyalty is by no means specific to cameras. I see it all the time with computers PC users hate the apple snobs. Apple users hate the PC geeks. With cars Ford vs chevy etc.... People like to feel like they belong to something, banding together with a group of people with similar tastes and equipment tends to build pride in what you have.
I used to be just such a guy, who got tangled up in the whole "one computer system is clearly superiour than another" debates, oh say 15-20 years ago. When the ones I had were overtaken in some areas by other brands, I still clung to the belief that the things holding me back were actually advantages and kept coming up with opinions that, looking back, seem bizarre ("there's enough colours on my screen... resolution is high enough too... don't need cheap hard disks, I've got two floppy drives... my BASIC is better than yours... little endian is Wrong...").
This is why I often have an allergic reaction when I see, or imagine seeing, this kind of thinking in other people. When I come across attitudes like these today it's hard to resist telling people to snap out of it. I believe I've grown out of this kind of thinking (although it's hard to objectively examine oneself); at least I try to be informed about what's going on in the market, and try to make educated buying decisions. Of course, as a teenager, a computer system was relatively more expensive for me than even a very nice camera would be now, so maybe there was more of an emotional investment and attachment.
I have to admit self-delusion appears to be going on anywhere, but taking slightly different forms: "filmlike" pictures of a baby monitor taken with a >$1000 lens on the Canon forum, terribly noisy but "usable" pictures of cleaning products in the Nikon forum, and all the Olympus guys on dpreview suddenly turning into underwater photographers, apparently on the grounds that the E330 has to be good for something.

It took 9 pages, but finally a decent response. For some reason, people seem to think I'm asking why they chose Canon over Nikon over here. Most of the answers are defensive in nature, but the question is very leading in that regard. Most of the answers are rational in one respect or another, that's not what I was looking for.. But you seem to 'get' what I'm after here. Personal tales of fanboy-ism.

Did we all give the wrong answers or did you ask the wrong question?
I used to have Nikon cameras. In fact when I started to look for a digital SLR system to build around for starting back into serious photography, I had assumed it would be Nikon.
But when I started looking at who was doing the cutting edge digital and was providing the most complete system, I found it was Canon. I also found the Nikon cameras to feel "cheaper." I was still ready to pull the trigger last February on a D-100 until I spent a Sunday with a Canon 20D. . I also knew even then I wanted a path to a full frame system and that didn't seem to be in Nikons plans. Noise at high ISO was another major plus for Canon.
I don't dislike Nikon but I think Nikon is not the camera company it was in the '80's.
Actually, during the film days, I had the Nikon F3 HP, Nikon F4s, the EOS 1, and the EOS 1N. Heck... just the MF24 or whatever number that was function back for the F4s with it's amazing features blew me away. My first digital camera (P&S) was a nikon as I was in awe of their matrix metering system and the ease of use.
Then canon came out with this digital SLR that went ahead of what Nikon had. Kodak was making all the digital moves back then and both Nikon and Canon were holding on firm to the film market. I had to choose and based on the glass I liked, I wanted to go with Nikon, but ended up going with canon. I still use my F4s and my EOS 1N - both use different systems, but both are very nice systems. Today, with digital, I feel the Canon system pricing and what it affords suits my needs better. Plus shooting full frame is addictive
Hi glowrider,
If you really need to get an answer for your question (why lot of canon users hate Nikon), you should ask that in Nikon forum, because that is where the Nikon bashing canon users hang around :-)
I was using Nikon cameras until recently as my main camera. Started using canon as my main camera just a month ago. So, I have seen many of these people, who you are going after...
They feel that that they know what is good for everyone else in the world. And they seem to know what every scene demands and what should work for anyone who takes pictures. They think that anyone who does not share their same opinion is a fool. People buy cameras because they like to use what they like. How can someone else go tell them what they should like?
Now, think about this... If every other day, one or the other guys from another forum comes to the canon forum and start-bashing canon for focus issues or body design or flash issues for couple of years, how will we feel? Will we feel a bit pissed? And will we eventually turn hostile? That is all is happening in the Nikon forum. Even if there are many shortcomings, every system has many users who know how to get the result they want with all the limitations in that system.
If you think the Nikon users in the Nikon forum are defensive, that is because of this. I was feeling very defensive too (even now, if someone start simply bashing Nikon or canon or any other camera company, I feel the same). When there are no troll posts around, you will see many Nikon users saying that they would like to see better noise performances from Nikon cameras. Other than just one noise issue, Nikon cameras are very nice to use. (Some people might say that Nikon does not have FF. But, not everyone needs a full frame. But, people who really need them currently have fewer choices with Nikon. They have to pick a Kodak or use film)
But, after moving to canon, I have learned that canon system has more than one shortcoming, even for an average user like me. So, I would say no system is perfect. I really wish that if canon and Nikon decide to merge and become one company, the entire photographic world would benefit from that.
So, good luck in getting the answer to your question. I am personally very curios to know the answer to that myself. Because I always used to wonder what is going in these people’s minds when they make those mindless brand bashing comments :-)
Regards,
-Beji
Please read the original post regarding some of the comments. This is posed in the Nikon forum as well, and I'm asking specifically why bash Nikon, not why choose Canon.
It seems to me that the majority of this bias is directed from Nikon enthusiasts towards Canon, with Canon enthusists only occasionally directing a bit of venom towards Nikon. Me? I'm not a camera enthusiast, just a photographer who happens to prefer Canon gear.
You said you want war stories from the "trolls"? I think that label is thrown around way too carelessly to mean "someone who disagrees with me". But after what happened yesterday I'm not even sure that it doesn't apply to me.
I made the mistake of posting in the Nikon forum. I saw a thread about a topic that interested me, so I thought what the heck, I'll be careful and try to avoid talking about camera systems and just focus on one particular aspect of technology that should be uncontroversial, and maybe there'll be an interesting discussion. A dozen pages or so later, the thread has spiralled out of control. I have to admit I got a bit angry with what I thought were nonsensical arguments by some of the participants, but I don't think I've bashed a brand (well, except Canon, in an inept attempt at a goodwill gesture). Still, I can't help but feel everything I said was interpreted in a way that's completely different from what I meant. I talk about technology, the other guy hears "Canon is better", even when I'm participating in the thread exactly because I'm not completely happy with my equipment.
So, am I a troll? I don't know. What we've got here is failure to communicate, and I won't try participating in a thread in the Nikon forum anytime soon after this experience. I think it's a shame that people can't talk to each other just because they have different cameras.
i dont dislike nikon...its a great system , the flash accuracy is superior to canon's. i used to shoot with nikons but what swung me over to canon is there fine L optics and there innovation in technology
