I stopped by BestBuys the other day and they had the 20D, 5D, and Nikon D200 on display.
I tried the 5D and D200 and must say I loved the D200, the way everything was placed and the way it felt in my hand....I really love Canon, but Nikon has really came out with a winner this time :-)

Off the top of my head, I'd say that 70% of Canon users chose Canon for reasons other than they studied diligently and chose Canon - probably name recognition, availability, wide range of products, etc. And most photographers can't afford to own both, so even if we discovered Nikon was better, we wouldn't run out and get one. I have viewed the Canon pages here every day for the past 3 months, and have seen very little of Nikon-bashing. I've seen far more "I wish Canon made a better..." then I have seen "Nikon sucks because..."
A more proper wording would have been, "Do you dislike Nikon, and if so, why?" And you would have gotten a ton of answers similar to these that say we don't dislike Nikon.

No, it wouldnt be a more proper wording. The question is meant to be loaded. I want to see the zealots come out and defend to the death their gear choice. And then tell me why they feel the need to do that...Typical Canon user, think they always know what's best for everyone else I don't care if people dislike Canon or Nikon, I want to know WHY they get so emotional about it...I have my thoughts that many seem to echo here, I'm not looking for rationalized answers. I'm trying to get to the good stuff.
there was a time I was using both systems, but later started migrating everything over to nikon. There were just some things that would piss me off on the canons, realized later the ergonomics was a key roll in me going all nikon. But the most important was the optics, I've been using nikkor for many years, EL, LF, on bronicas, plaubels, and then on 35, and seriously found no other brand compared. We're talking about 70+ years of optical engineering, and refinement. So I was happy.
But canon has come a long way, and I admit, nikon didn't get a jump on the digital revolution. But that's OK, I just kept shooting.
There are some features in each system that are lacking in the other. Years ago I was torn between the two, but decided on Canon after reading a book about photographing North Carolina waterfalls. The author was a Nikon shooter but had one Canon camera to use the 24mm T/S lens to capture the full height of many waterfalls.
Canon looks for taleted athletes to sell their products, not some sluts that shows up in a orgy party. I'll take the Nikon, you guys can fight over Carmen.
Although I'm primarily a Canon shooter, I love Nikon gear (& Pentax, Leica, etc.), but can't afford to own it all. If I won the lottery I'd run right out and buy a F6. However, I still have a FM3A and FE for when I have an itch for retro. Great stuff!

Because, um most actors and professional sports players are also award winning photographers. Right. Canon also uses their lenses to sell their products. Most people I know, when they see a light colored lens, assume its Canon, whether or not it actually is. Thats good marketing.
Well, this certainly comes at an interesting moment...
Lately I've been wondering why it *seems like* Nikon folk get *very* upset by Canon owners\users over at that 'other' forum. Honestly, I don't see hardly, if any, of that here which is why this board is so much better!
I have to honestly say that from my perspective the *average* Nikon owner is VERY defensive and hostile about their brand. Much more so than what I've seen of the *average* Canon owner.
There is an arrogance to them that was alluded to in some of the previous posts. I've experienced it first hand myself-"...oh...you have a Canon...(insert roll-eyes here...). Not just once-but often, too often in fact. This hasn't happened on internet forums, but in the flesh. A guy shooting a Nikon D50 looked at me on the sideline of a game and said it-"oh it's a Canon...". It didn't matter that it was a 1D lol... This 'prejudice' if you will, goes back a long...long...ways. I went through it when I bought my AE-1 and I experience it with my 20D\1D.
Honestly, EVERY Nikon shooter I've known has carried themself with an air of superiority that would make a Leica owner jealous. It's a given-if you are shooting a NIKON you are using a REAL PHOTOGRAPHERS CAMERA! Of course, some are very gracious, and will let you know that-"Canon makes some nice stuff..." Did you get the slap? "Stuff", Canon makes STUFF! HA-not 'photographic equipment' but STUFF. And only SOME of it is nice.
Maybe Nikon puts some magic compound on their manuals that infuse folks with this?
Seems like there are some very die-hard myths (film or digital) that continually circulate...
Nikon makes 'pro' cameras, Canon makes cameras for 'consumers'.
Nikon makes their own glass, Canon had to BUY glass from Nikon early on (no one mentions that Nikon wasn't making actual cameras until years after Canon).
Canon wide angles suck....
Canon ergonomics suck
Serious photographers use Nikon, only *sports* shooters use Canon.
Canon gives their cameras and lenses away for free.
Canon digital images look plastic.
No matter what body Canon makes, Nikon bodys are 'stronger, tougher, more pro built, etc....
Nikon digitals create sharper images
Nikon colors are better
Nikon dynamic range is better
ad nauseum....
And, yes, I admit after hearing this stuff over and over and over, it gets tiresome. Very tiresome...
Heck, I don't care what you shoot with-use a darn pinhole if you want. But when the misinformation and outright lies (yes-LIES), get spread like gospel, I admit it gets to me. But the truth, never seems to to matter to a Nikon shooter!
My bottom line...
I believe that most Nikon owners truly *feel* that Canon will never make a *better* camera than Nikon-period. Canon may have some slightly better technology in *some* areas, but overall their cameras are inferior to Nikons.
Now, most Canon owners probably *feel* that Nikon makes a great camera and let it go at that.
It truly is pointless to try and bash one company over another. they each have their strong and weak points. and as it was already mentioned. no one company can DO IT ALL.
I shoot canon, because that is what i got first, and ended up investing my money into. I had contemplated selling it all to get the D2X though, but i would've lost money trying to switch and still get the caliber of lenses that i own already. I would however get a nikon for their wideangles. but moreso for the sole use of the new Zeiss ZF lenses. since they are a direct mount. something i really wish they wouldve done for canon.
i like both companies equally, to be honest. and if i had the money, i would gladly shoot with both. I do slightly prefer the ergonomics on Nikon though. But i have zero complaints with Canon's ergonomics.
if nikon made a full frame it may have been a harder decision to not switch

Just kidding. I agree with a lot of what was said above -- that brand loyalty clouds judgement and people cannot accept that there is a good/better alternative. That said, I assume that people chose the camera body/lens system that best fits their needs. Neither brand has a huge advantage against the other.
I see this brand loyalty all the time in my other hobbies -- Subaru Impreza STi vs. Mitsubishi Evolution; Ellsworth Truth vs. Turner Burner; Burton snowboards vs. all others(!); Head racquets vs. Babolat vs. Wilson vs. etc. Listening to the "mine is better than yours" banter gets old.
Well, I go over to the Nikon forum once and awhile and the shots I see posted there are just as great as the ones I see here. Does that count for anything?
