John; I think you have to be patient with New Years causing a few extra days of waiting.
Some screens, most probably, they don't stock but rather make to order and with the manufacturing plus shipping you'll probably have it any day now.

John,

I just ordered one...and there is a 7-14 day backlog. Seems that the microprism is a hot item right now.

Fed Ex called me yesterday, it will be delivered tomorrow. Just curious which version I'm getting, because I asked a change in my order last minute (from split screen + grid towards microprism + grid, given the comments on th eforum of the 'crowdy viewfinder for the splistcreen)).

p.3 #6 · Microprism-only Brightscreen on Canon 5D

Got my microprism screen today. Did a series of tests.

All tests with my CZ 85/1.2 at 1.2, mirror lock up.

Photo #1 is with Canon Ec-B split-image screen. Focused with Naked Eyepiece, Nikon Dk17m 1.2x Eyepiece, and Canon Angle Finder C. All had the "14" in same focus. This verified what I already knew, that my Canon screen was in perfect registration to my sensor plane.

Photo #2 is with the screen changed, AND lens focus barrel was not altered. The purpose of this exposure was to verify everything was identical to what happened with the Canon focusing screen in place. However, when I looked in my viewfinder, what I noticed was the "14" no longer appeared in focus, but number 14 1/2 did. (However, a sharp "14" is still what the lens and sensor are recording.)

Photo #3 was with the "14" brought into focus via Britescreen microprism screen. As with the shots with the Canon screen in place, I focused with Naked Eyepiece, Nikon Dk17m 1.2x Eyepiece, and Canon Angle Finder C. All had the "14" in same focus. Shot is obviuosly front focused now.

Test was repeated over and over with different subjects, arangements, etc, and results were same each time. Bummer.

whoops- cancelled my image upload- thought I had a few weeks left on it. I can email my file to someone if they'd want to post it.

That's too bad John, and it resembles my experience.

I have my hopes up for the prism only screen which is due in any day now.

I'm glad I found this thread. I'm having the same issue as John and Henrick, and it's been driving me crazy for two days. I've done dozens and dozens of tests, and with my Brightsreen (microprism only version) in, I'm getting consistent front focus (in the final image, the area behind the center focus point is clear and in focus, but the center point - where I'm carefully focusing - is out of focus).

I've re-seated the Brightscreen dozens of times, carefully checking everything. My Canon screen focuses perfectly. I've checked the diopter, etc. Tried many lenses. Some lenses are worse than others. My Zeiss lenses seem to do the worst.

I've been racking my brains, trying to figure out what's wrong, and finding this thread, it appears I am not alone.

Mike

Brightscreen has acknowledged the issue and a shim is available they will send me in a week or so. If I am not satisfied, they would still offer a refund. Can't beat that for responsiveness, now can you!

Brightscreen is demonstrating outstanding customer service with this issue. Here's an email I received from Jim...

Mike,

Sorry for the confusion of camera types.

We have found shimming problems with the 5D cameras also. There are many issues we are addressing now. We have found manufacturing differences with the 5D cameras which have contributed to many unforeseen circumstances. In brief, we are resolving all issues now with different remedies to correct any and all issues. The majority of 5D cameras should not require this new shim, however we are producing these now to include with all future orders and these will also be sent to all consumers as soon as possible.

Hope this helps and again we apologize for your inconveniences,

Jim Lakey

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your reply.

Mine is not a 1D series camera – it is a 5D. Does this same issue apply to the 5D cameras and screens?

Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mr. Hatam,

Most of our time to date recently has been consumed with regular business and R&D production with screens for the 5D cameras.

We have now however just determined that a shim is necessary for the 1D series cameras. We have now discontinued shipments of the 1D screens until we can manufacture a shim to include with all 1D series screens. We will recall all screens which have been shipped for the 1D screens to date and or, also offer an option to await the shim to be forwarded as soon as possible.

Shims could be ready as soon as next week, however we are quoting an estimated date of 14 to 21 days. In addition to shims, we are also planning to release a series of masks designed to project different aspect ratios later in January or February.

You may choose to await receipt of the new shim, return your screen for a full refund including shipping charges and or, choose an extended 45 day return privilege for a full refund. We apologize for your inconveniences and will await your reply.

Kind regards.

Subject: Problem with my Brightscreen

Hi Jim,

I received my Brightscreen (Canon 5D – large micro-prism-only version), and have been using it for 4 days now.

I am having problems with it – it is consistently front-focusing. In other words, when the image in the view-finder is crisp and clear at the center of the screen, and I take the picture, in the resulting image the area behind the center is in focus, but the center is out of focus.

I have re-seated my screen a dozen times, being very careful to make sure everything is correct. I’ve adjust my diopter setting, and calibrated it. I’ve performed numerous controlled tests to double, triple, quadruple-check my results. The results are consistently front-focused.

I’m am not having these issues when I switch back to my Canon screen, which can only lead me to believe that it is an issue with my Brightscreen.

What do you suggest I do? The screen is not usable for me with this performance. Do you think I may have a defective screen?

Thanks,
Mike

What does the Brightscreen do to the accuracy of meter reading? In past test on my Bronica ETRSi, the only way for me to counter the false reading was to set a fictitious ISO value on the prism meter.

I have not noticed any issues with metering. Exposures seem right on.

With both of my Brightscreens, exposure is spot on, and my tests (metering of 18% grey card in the studio) show no measurable difference between either of Canon's screens (assuming the right Custom Function is selected) and the Brightscreens (which I use with the MF CF set).

Peter, apparently Canon uses these shims to make focus perfect in the 5Ds—but not all of them; I was told that four different, color-coded, shims have been found so far.

For me, thinking about Canon QA, this is a very good sign—I see no other explanation than some tech in Canon is looking at, and correcting, precise focus on every camera.

More to follow on shims, as it comes to hand. cheers, kit

I'm very puzzled by this. It's good that Canon check and install the shim if necessary on the 5D. However there's no mention of this with the instructions for the 3 interchangeable screens for the 5D. I would have thought the shim would be to get the optical path length for a particular camera within tolerance. One done, that camera should work with all screens within the Canon screen specification. I can understand third party screens requiring an additional shim if they have different mechanical or optical properties ie. thickness or refractive index.

I guess there's the possibility the microprism screen allows you to judge focus so well that the residual error within the camera body becomes evident and an additional shim installed by the user may be needed.

I'm ready to order a microprism only screen, but waiting to see how this thread pans out.

This is good news, seems like a plausible explanation and a viable solution to the screen focusing issues.

I look forward to trying it out.
