p.1 #1 · D2X High ISO

Some of you may have seen my frustration a bit back with my D2X and high ISOs.

I went back and really looked at what I was doing and tried some stuff with Nikon Capture (had been using adobe camera RAW).

I found that Capture produced less noise in the file when I pushed it and the noise reduction in it is very nice. Here are some examples...

You should be able to look at quite large sizes of these pics.

Here is the one at ISO 3200. Not beautiful but not too bad either...

The moral to this story is I'm happy with the X again. I'm not happy that I'll need some more RAM

Andrew, you've hit on one of the best kept secrets of the Nikon 'system'. And this is exactly why Nikon wants people to use their software. I can only get good high ISO images when processing with Capture. I can't even come close with ACR and all the ninja's. This picture looks great to me!

OK jacko, this just screams for a question.

What techniques or settings do you use for Nikon's Noise reduction? I know that it slows down my hole system to a crawl so do you do it at the end?

Thanks,

Chris

I do mine at the end. I have a few presets per ISO, then at the end select your photos in the multipane and use the little dropdown menu in the ISO window. Click save.

It seems to work for me.

Although getting a good feel for Capture (after using Photoshop since 2.5) has taken me a bit longer than I'd like - it is the way to get the best looking high ISO images out of the D2X in my limitted, but growing experience. Another thing to keep in mind is, what are you shooting these pics for? Unless I really blow the shot - any pick at 1600 and most at 3200 look very good on screen and great printed. Sure, they may take some tweaking, but at least we can post process them if need be, unlike the film days when you weren't really sure you got (or missed) the shot until after it was developed at which point your options were very limitted - at least mine were.

Since it arrived on 12.19 I've put about 1,500 shots through the D2X - I love it more and more each time I shoot with it.

I've been usin Capture for a long time and find as the most useful tool on my nikon bag.
I only shoot raw and do all the work i can with capture, and after trying some other options as camera raw and bible, I always prefer Capture despite it slowliness and some instability on my Mac systems.
With high ISO or big pushes on the exposure compensation i think it does an awsome job.

Ditto Milkman's request as to how you guys are approaching this in NC. Fundy, where is the dropdown menu in iso window?
Thanks,
D

While I'm thinking about it how much memory do you have on a Windows based machine. Are you using Better Quality or Faster?

Is there some comparison between the two so that I could view Faster, but then Batch Better Quality?

Thanks

Right on the pallette for tweaking the Noise, there is a little dropdown menu on the top right corner. I set mine at about 15 for the noise reduction and save that. Then it will show up in the dropdown menu, you can select multiple photos and choose that setting in the dropdown menu.

BTW - I have 1 GB of memory and an Athalon 64 3000 processor. I think I need more. Anyone know if Atholon or Pentium is faster for Capture?
