p.1 #1 · 85 1.2 and 35 1.4 do dark bar band

My brother was playing in a blues jam in Wisconsin over the holidays and I decided to take a few photos. I got my 85 1.2 like two days before, so this was my first opportunity to try it out. All shots were with 20D and at ISO 1600! The lighting was NOT good. Here are a couple of shots that I thought came out okay for a first time out:

And with the 35 1.4:

I find those to be the two most useful primes in small, dim places.

Man those are some of the ugliest musicians I've ever seen. Regardless, you did a great job.

. . . Welcome to the world of REAL musicians

They don't look a lot worse than a bunch of photographers.

Great work. I'm too poor for the 85L, but when my 35L is wide open at 1600 ISO, you can hear the light getting sucked in!

Yeah, great lenses both. I rented the 85 this weekend to check it out. Took shots at a party with available light only at 1600 and they look terrific.

You did a nice job with both lenses. Enjoy.

Yup, go look at the nature photographers self portrait thread (there's a pic of me and many others) YEEESH!

Your shots look great - I particularly like the first one. I'm convinced that I need to go get the 85L. Which lens was used for which photo?

Thanks all for the comments.

Cox, All were the 85L except the last one which was with the 35L.

Of course, what I did not say was that each of these got a good dose of Noise Ninja to start with (though not on the in focus areas) followed by selective sharpening (only sharpening the in focus areas). I

Best,

The link is correct . . the site's just having "issues" tonight for some reason.

It works one minute, then not the next.

Or maybe it wasn't OK.

I didn't notice any typos in it, and it seemed to work when I typed it in manually.

So, I just took the "known good" URL and edited the post above. Seems to work fine, now.

David,

Nice shots. It is amazing how a big aperture helps in places like this! I have shot ballet using a 70-200 2.8 IS and while it was okay, I think I will be much better off with the 85L. I am even tempted to get the 135L, but I am not sure how much better that will be than the 70-200.....

Best,

Steve O.
