I'm looking into getting my girlfriend a 350D for her birthday and am trying to decide what CF card to get her. I've done some searching here on FM, read dpreview, and Rob Galbraith's site.
From what I can see from the write speeds tests on those sites, a Kingston Elite Pro 2GB card would limit the camera's write speed, but a Lexar 80x or Sandisk Ultra II wouldn't. Assuming I'm right, how much does the slower speed of the Kingston affect the camera in real world shooting?
She doesn't shoot in bursts now, but that may be partially due to not wanting to waist precious film.
As above, any of those will work fine. The 2GB will give over 500 shots in hi jpeg or about 220 in RAW. I use 3 2gig , a couple of 1 gig and 4 512 for back up and the 2 gig works out very nice. I have used the Lexar and the San disk Ultra II. The Sandisk in the 2 gig has been great with no difficulty.
Don't waste your money in going for the fastest CF cards -- even on a 1D2 (lightning fast compared to the 350D) I've never seen a need for these Ultra fast cards --in fact I'm still using some of the original "Dinosaur age" original IBM microdrives in the 1D2 and NEVER had a problem.
After a certain level any speed increase is just "Sales hype".
For example who really needs the 80X CD burners (I think we probably all burn DVD's anyway now). -- You'll certainly regret buying one of these CD drives if a slightly misshaped CD is ejected from the drive at great speed separating your neck from your head.
Save your money on more worthwhile things such as better glass.
Thanks for the replies, guys. That's very helpful. I'll be buying the Kingston car then. That seems like a very good deal at $89.99 after rebate from buy.com...
