p.1 #1 · extender 1.4 Canon or Tamron

Hello,
I need an advice as to which extender I should get the Canon or Tamron. It is for use with a 70-200 4L Canon zoom
The Canon extender is almost 320.00 $ cnd dollars more than the Tamron...why is Canon so expensive.
I was also told that I could use the Tamron extender with the above lense mounted on a 20D...is this true ?
Any help would be appreciated
Many thanks
Cyril

Because Canon lenses are over-priced.

Yes. I have used my Tamron SP 1.4X TC with a Canon 300 f4, Tamron 90mm macro, and my Tamron 200-500 Di.

The Kenko 300 Pro DG converters are identical to the Tamrons (same manufacturer) and a little cheaper. Running wisdom is that there is barely any difference between these and the Canon. Perhaps a noticable difference with the 2x.

Notice I have both Canon and Tamron SP TC's. The Tamrons work on any lens I own and are a bit cheaper with about the same image quality.

Agreed. The Tamron SP is great. I even tried it on a Sigma 20mm and it worked.
Looked like crap, but it worked .
On 10 pin EF lenses, it also correctly shows up in EXIF data as a 1.4X

Be careful! There are two Tamron extenders, a 4-element version and a 7-element version. The 7-element is the one which is identical to the Kenko which is so highly rated. The 4-element... not so good, apparantly.

looks like the Tamron SP 1.4 is 5 elements in 4 groups, 7 elements for the 2X.

Most of my serious shooting is done with long lenses and a 1.4x, and I would not compromise the quality of the images from a $5500 lens one bit by trying to save on a 1.4x. That said, I've had 3 different Canon 1.4x's and 2 different Tamron SP 1.4x's, and, if there is a difference in the image quality, my eyes aren't good enough to see it. Every credible test I've seen shows the
Tamron SP (or Kenko Pro) and the Canon have virtually identical performance in the center of the glass, and the Canon does a bit better toward the edges.
With a 1.3 or 1.6 crop camera, you aren't using the edges. Right now, I have a Canon 1.4x and a Tamron SP, and I use them interchangeably without reservation. Perhaps, if I was shooting with a FF camera, I'd come to a different conclusion, but, with my 1DII and 20D, I see no performance difference whatever.

Not sure how the Canon can be so much more than the Tamron. The Canon 1.4 sells for $290USD at B&H.

Thank you all for your good advice...
I think that I will go with the Tamron considering that there is little difference in image quality.
Happy new year

I'd recommend go with Canon 1.4x TC. It works best with Canon long primes.
