I'm starting to suspect this is gonna be a problem.
Let me explain. There is this great thread https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/330232
that got me sentimental about film and it's teaching value.
So I went to my local shop to buy some astia and maybe some porta film.
So now the problem. They had this great Nikon 135 f 2.0 ... just sitting there!
I mean what would you do ... this thing is sooo good to hold ... and F2.0!
It's not really that expensive - really! I've got this figgured out. When you consider that buying that film might have started an expensive hobby - you know film costs, developing ... a tip for the processing guy so he does it extra "right" ... hech that adds up! Right? This lens I figgure has saved me a bundle over the years .... or decades. So this was the right choice under the circumstances because I now don't have the money for those two rolls of film.
This lens is sharp! At F 2.0 it issolates the background superbly and the bokeh is the nicest I've yet seen.
Now, I'm a recent Nikon convert and perhaps this is common? But now when I close my eyes ... I see an 85 F1.4 ... just hovering in space smiling at me. Is this normal?
I feel like I need to stand up and say .... Hi. My name is Pavel. I'm a Nikoholic. I don't know how it happened.
I understand, I understand what you're suffering from..... too well....
I have the same deasese.
There is just no cure.
I did own this lovely lens once and had to sell it against the big 80-200 AFS when I turned pro 10 years ago.
This is my next purchase : back to the 135 !
I own the fabulous 85 f/1.4 AFD, and it's physical not-so-smaller-brother the 28 f/1.4.... These lenses will NEVER be disappointing.
Congrats for your new purchase, and don't keep dreaming, go... gooooo to the stooore.... get the 85.......
They say that recognizing an addiction and going public about it is the first step...
maybe in this case it's all you have to do? On the other hand, they also say that some people have to hit bottom before they are willing to accept the problem and take action to stop. So maybe you have to keep buying and taking photos at a furious pace before stopping seems like the only option.
I think there is a meeting going on somewhere all the time for people like you. like my old signature used to say
"I need better gear so I can get more work so I can get better gear so I can get more work so I can..."
Why, Mr. Pavel? Why do you want to buy a 85mm F1.4? Why get up? Why keep shooting? Do you believe you're fighting for something? For more that your survival? Can you tell me what it is? Do you even know? Is it bokeh? Or dof? Perhaps the'feel'? Yes? No? Could it be for love? Illusions, Mr. Pavel. Vagaries of perception. The temporary constructs of a feeble human intellect trying desperately to justify an existence that is without meaning or purpose. And all of them as artificial as theC**** itself, although only a human mind could invent something as insipid as a prime lens love. You must be able to see it, Mr. Pavel. You must know it by now. You can't win. It's pointless to keep fighting. Why, Mr.Pavel? Why? Why do you persist?
When I decided to get back into photography and go digital, I initially figured I could be outfitted for about $5,000 Cdn complete. I've now spent close to 6 times that, and I'm not done yet.
I'll save a chair for you at the next meeting, and oh yes... welcome to the club
Soenda, Mert .... I think I understand! It's metaphysical (or some other concept that I can't grasp) so I can't fight it! I surender to the inevitable .... and I see I'm in great company . I'm happily going for the search for bottom!
I've already decided that the motorcycle is going up for sale next spring. Lets see - do I really need a car? There is many a comfortable bridge in raleigh, some even stay kinda warm in winter.
Of course the only fair thing is to give Jacko a fair head start to get his 85 1.4 before I do - so that bank job can wait a while.
There - now I feel better. I have a sound plan. I see more clearly. This is the Nikon experience!
Thank you all, my fellow sages.
Now to look under the sofa cushions ... there may be some pennies there.
Spend a little, have some fun.
I just purchased a 75-150E on eBay for $50+-.
I owned an original when first introduced. Some of my best photos ever were taken with this lens.
That said, I have $13k+ Nikon glass and use most.
Over the past few weeks I tend to be using the manual focus 75-150E.
Things I like:
Absolutely sharp @3.5.
I shoot allot in the 75-135MM range on the D2x
Fixed 3.5 at all focal lengths.
Very small (70-200, 80-400 & 200-400 are killers)
People are not intimidated with a small lens.
52 mm can use a $35 Nikon T3 or 3T ? for Macro.
Almost macro on d2x
Allot of fun.
And did I say sharp??
Just printed a cropped 17x22 shot at 75mm f8, one of my best prints ever.
I love eBay.
Pavel, Great thread. I am back in photo after shooting cruddy knock offs as an undergrad eons ago. Bought a D100 last year and have been having fun, but when I took my first shots with the 85 mm PC - well, they will be putting that lens in my coffin with me, in my cold right hand. And my 70-200 2.8 VR in the other.
The motorcycle and I had a chat the other day about seeing other people, but for the meantime we are still together.
I shoot alot of travel, and love the convenience of zoom lenses, but I am beginning to see the light, and the boke, and the details in the dark with that prime lens. Cheers, James McClean
I feel your pain. Last spring I went shopping for either a 105 micro Nikkor or a 90 macro Tamron on eBay. I didn't like the prices so dropped out of the bidding. While waiting for the auction to finish I threw out some lowball bids on a few other lenses, just in case. Well, I got a 180 f 2.8 Nikkor and a 300 f2.8 Nikkor for a song. I really wasn't planning on either lens, but hey Nikon glass is nice right? Well I was contacted by a fellow who was complacent with his bidding on the 300 f2.8 and ended up trading it for his 300 f4 and some cash. Now which lens do I shop for with my windfall? A 17-35 f2.8, 12-24 DX, or do I want more primes? Man I could use an 18, 20, 24, 50, 85 and 135. No wait I still want a micro.......
Solution: Stay out of stores. Don't look at magazine or TV ads. Go out and take lots of pictures. Spend the next 365 days processing them and show them here on FM. Enjoy!
What the heck........... where were all you 135f2 lusters when I had a brand new one for sale a week ago on the B&S forum for a song at $750? It was a $1069 lens brand new in the box and I had the hardest time selling it........
Oh well, guess I'm not the only one that is out of funds at the moment.
